A bit early in the training cycle to nail this down for me but with a fair wind.....in the absence of a fair wind I will be back in August to EDIT:)

It'll be another few months before I nail my colours to that mast. Give me shout in August and I'll know better.

At least my seat on the fence won't get cold while I am chasing sub 3:p

Hi all I have been out of action for a loonnngggg while due to injury , just coming back. I'm entered for Berlin 14 but still no better than 50/50 on doing it ( depends if I get through next 2/3 weeks training ok). I had a quick look at web-site and cant find a defferal option. Does anyone know if there is one or not ( apologies if the answer is earlier in thread but I hadnt the heart to plow through the 15 pages to check).
    Thanks a mill

This is all I can find on the website:

"SCC EVENTS registrations are non-refundable (see §3 paragraph 5) and non-transferable. Only individuals who have officially registered are permitted to participate in races organized by SCC EVENTS. Running without an official registration or "running for someone else" is a violation of the terms and conditions for a participation in SCC EVENTS competitions (§ 3 paragraph 4) and will result in disqualifiacation"

Berlin will be my 3rd Marathon. First one in 3 hr 52 in 2012 , 2nd one in Dublin in 3hr 8 in 2013 ( hit the wall at mile 22)
2014 so far has seen PB's accross the board (5k 17:14, 10k 35:48, 10 mile 59:16 and Half 1:19:58) Think I can knock a min or 2 of the half time during the summer.

Firstly I want to go sub 3 but ideally 2:49.

Does anyone know of a Dublin based running group I could fall in with for the longer runs? I'll be following my own plan but wouldn't mind some company / motivation for the longer runs. Preferably some people training for Berlin too and also aiming for around 3 hours, if I'm to be completely fussy! Or should I go with a local running club?

There's plenty of us doing Berlin with similar targets. Maybe post on the group training session page when you're planning the long runs and somebody will oblige you?

great progress there, think you will achieve goal, better pb's than me when i got 2:49.
    you following any particular plan?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭WithCheesePlease

I'd also be curious to see the sub-3 training plans being used by others. I'm going to do myself up a 14 week plan this weekend but I'd be curious to see how it compares to other peoples. Bit of homework copying :)

Really? 2:49 would be something special. I'm concerned about the last 6 miles as I struggled very badly last yr.
I followed Pfitzinger & Douglas for dublin last yr. Have joined a club so am working of a training plan given to me. Its made up of two speed sessions, mainly 400's and ladder sessions and a long run with recovery runs the other days. Have done 2*16,2*18 and my 2nd 20 mile run this weekend. Weekly milage will be between 60-80 miles.

    trust the system!
lot of long runs in there, 100 days to go.
good to see what others are doing, i def have to get a few more long runs in, following JD 50 - 70 mile plan.
just out of interest, what pace you doing the long runs at?

I was thinking the same myself. Got a shock when I saw how many long runs you'd already done. I think it's time I got moving.

I was a bit surprised to see its 100 days away!!
As my main worry is the last 6 miles I want to be as hard as nails by Sept 28th so lots of long runs at a comfortable pace.

As per the plan it says they should be done at 7:30 pace. Have done most of my long runs around this pace. Did my last two at 7:15 & 7:10 avg (18 and 20 mile).

Ok, I'm not feeling the sub-3 is in me this time around so I'm revising my predicted time. For now..

Anyone run this (or similar size field) before and have any thoughts on the congestion? I hear it can be much elbow to elbow all the way, depending on your position.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭WithCheesePlease

One person I spoke to was aiming for 2:45 and started in the 2:45 pen and said he struggled to maintain an 8 minute / mile pace for the first few miles. He said the congestion for the first few miles was awful. Needless to say he didn't get his 2:45.

That surprised me considering how much you hear about it being such a fast course.

I did the Paris marathon last year with ~35K starters and there was zero congestion. Then again it started on the Champs-Élysées and went around all of the huge Paris streets and avenues so you probably can't compare.

I ran Berlin back in 2010 and was really surprised with the congestion for the first few miles. They had a pen for 2.50 - 3.00hrs but anyone could enter it, it was abolutely jammed pack, I was passing people out in the first few miles who wouldn't have even gone sub 4. Maybe it has improved since then, they could easily put some controls in place to fix it.

In Paris the following spring it was super efficient if you didn't have the correct colour bib you were not getting past the stewards at the entrance to each pin, I probably got over the start line in less than 45 seconds. The same for London, aiming for sub-3 and started just behind the championship runners.

Entered Berlin again this year. It is a great race, great support and not a hill in sight. They also offer massages around the 20ml mark (or late in the race anyway)

Hopefully none of us will have to avail of these!

Look on the bright side, at least this will mean that you won't have to worry about ending up running on your own like the day of your 10K win:D
