Just beginning to come back from injury so Berlin will come a little too soon for any thoughts of PBs.
The goal will be to use it as an LSR and perhaps try to PB in Dublin a month later....if I don't end up pacing it!

Some inspiration to get you in the mood for Berlin. Haven't seen the movie (only the trailer).

    Hi folks,

Currently following the P&D 55 mile plan for hopefully a 3:15 in Berlin.

Would racing the Clonmel half instead of doing the scheduled 8-15k tune up race on the Saturday & 17m long run on the Sunday be a good/bad idea 6 weeks out from Berlin?

Missed out on the 1:30 by a couple of seconds last year so thinking about giving it a go again.

Loosely following P&D too and plan on running the national half marathon, not a great course but its the right time for me in training to see where I'm at. Haven't really raced since 10K in May. Also planning to do Tullamore Half at end of Aug too. I would probably take the next day off to recover from racing a half but it depends on the person, recovery etc.

Think racing the half 6 weeks out from berlin won't have any negative effects. I'll give it a go & definitely take a rest day after it. Best of luck

I'm more than likely going to do the half in Clonmel too. I've realised I'm taking a very agile approach to my training (not sure how that'll work out for me) and am more just trying to get my key runs done every week and build my distance and keep an eye on pacing and not worry too much about the specifics. We'll see how that works out for me though!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭WithCheesePlease

    Actually, question...

I've put down that I'm aiming for 3:08 but sub-3 would still be a stretch goal and is still in the back of my mind. I think I should comfortably be able for 3:08 so am keeping my options open if training looks to be going well...

Let's say a sub-3 assumes an average race pace of 6:50 min/mile or 4:15 min/km - what kinda pace should one be doing their long slow training runs at? I'm currently running mine at 4:40 min/km or 7:30 min/miles. But I think I might be after getting this all wrong?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,343 ✭✭✭dwayneshintzy

45-90 seconds slower than race pace is some general advice for a long slow run, no? So that'd sound fair enough, maybe a bit slower.

  • Registered Users Posts: 126 ✭✭loughie

Long slow runs for me are at 8 min/mile. Long progression run I'll run the first part at 8 min/mile and the second part at marathon pace. This run is usually every third week with P&D program. Always struggled with long runs for previous marathons but so far its going ok.

I'm also doing the national half for the same reason, to give me a guide for Berlin. However with the uphill course it may give a slightly skewed perspective on my potential marathon times.

Like yourself, and as a back up I may do a 2nd half later in Aug (longford or tullamore). The only problem is that racing a half messes up the week before and after the race (for me anyway). I'll probably wait and see how the RnR goes first and then decide.

I know it is difficult to give a definitive answer to the following question, but here goes anyway.

I rand DCM last year and got through it ok, wanted sub 4hr but missed it by a couple of minutes.

I am well into my training for Berlin at this stage and everything is going relatively well.

I am wondering if I could do Berlin and also do Dublin 4 weeks later or whatever it is? What would my training be in between the two of them, I would have to leave some time to recover from Berlin while also maintaining fitness (Remembering I will be running Berlin on the back of a taper period). I just think it would be great to get Dublin done aswell while I still have the benefit of the training for Berlin in my legs. What would ye think of this?

Also, on taper periods is 4 weeks too long, i.e. 20mile, then 15mile, then 12mile, then 7 mile, then Berlin? Does anybody have any thought on taper periods?

Here's some advice on this. I believe Pfitzinger & Douglas's "Advanced Marathoning" will also have a section on this.

For what it's worth, I'm also down to do DCM, but as a 5-hour pacer, which will pose quite a different kind of challenge, I think!

I did both back in 2010.
All of my efforts were geared towards Berlin. took a week break after Berlin and did 15 miles, then 12 miles the 2 weekends before dublin.
Needless to say, my Berlin time was quicker than Dublin (by a couple of mins).

As regards tapering, personally I go for a 2 week taper as I find 3 weeks just too long. 4 weeks is def too long.
    Good luck.

I am also running both. Going to follow the P&D multiple marathoning plan in between the two races.

I'm doing the same....targeting 3:40 for Berlin, and then a 4:50 pacer for DCM.

Really wanted to do DCM again, but didn't wanna push myself. Being a pacer should be a good experience (I've never done it before), plan on doing a couple 15-20 mile runs after Berlin at 11 minute mile pace.

  • Registered Users Posts: 879 ✭✭✭Caprica

I did both in 2010 and again this year, but Dublin will be as a 3.30 pacer. For 2010 I took the week after Berlin of, ran 10k a week later and then I did two 13 milers. I will admit I did find Dublin tough, had a comfortable sub 3 in Berlin (2.56) and had to work very hard for 2.59 and a few seconds in Dublin.

Personally I always stick to a two week taper, I would find anything else a bit to long.

Are there pacers in Berlin ?

Every ten minutes as far as I can remember.

Newbie to this forum. I'm aiming for sub 4hours in Berlin 3:59:59 would make me very happy. Crashed and burned at my first marathon, Dublin last year and crawled home in 4:18 so I think I'm aiming for the biggest improvement on here but I know I can do it. My PB's are 5km 22:30, 10km 47:36 and half 1:48:56. Have a 30km/18.6mile run in 2:57 in the bag, training is going to plain so feeling good. Good luck everyone over the next few weeks, only 7weeks to go. I've my alarm set to practice my pre-race breakfast in the morning.

Mid-training slump at the moment. Ran the rock n roll half, new PB by just under a minute 1:23:25........margins look tight for sub3!

Big mileage week finished with an awful 20 miler (meant to be 22 miles!). I was in a heap finishing it. Took Monday off to recover but bonked on a tempo last night!
Signed up for Tullamore half at end of month, last tune-up before Berlin. Hope training going well for everyone.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,343 ✭✭✭dwayneshintzy

Training's going abysmally, lower left shin has been killing me and i completely skipped my long run on Sunday (was scheduled to do 20 miles). Gonna take it easy this week, maybe 14/15 on Sunday and then a 20 mile run the following week.

I'll follow the same theme, legs are like led at the moment and I'm wondering how I'm going to get through another fast session or long run. Had a terrible long run last weekend. But I'm telling myself that some weeks will be worse than others and it's just a matter of getting through them and putting them behind you and moving on...

Went for a sports massage last night though (AGONY!) so hopefully that'll do the trick before my 20 miles this weekend. Gotta get better at the foam rolling...
