Thinking about it, that episode really reminded me of the medic episode from Band of Brothers.

Another fantastic episode. The characters are all so well fleshed out it is incredible.

Does anyone think Mary woke up for those 3 hours? I think Matt was hallucinating, as he did after the roadside attack. He truly does believe she woke up though; his faith is almost unshakable.

I think he replaced the guy in stocks at the end to atone for the sins of the people around him and in Miracle, not his own. Although beating the guy with the paddle while shouting "Brian" may also have driven him to 'repent' as such.

Have heard it so many times before without knowing the artist, and I must say it was a fantastic use of it.

Just incredible TV. Totally above and beyond what "entertainment" should be. Worried about the viewing figures, I'd be gutted if it was cancelled.

Are the viewing figures very poor for it? I don't know anyone personally that watches it and anyone I recommend it to looks distinctly uninterested

Doesn't bode well for a third series if so, they need viewers to make it viable.

From reading what American's think about the show, yeah, ratings are low, like 700,000 avg a week. BUT, hbo have it on their on demand service over there and they are counting the viewership seprate there too, so could be Mich more.

Also, the writers have said, season is written and they are already working on season 3s script. I think it will get another season.

I mean, it's the best show on tv right now, it has to, right? right?

I wouldn’t be overly worried, it’s in a timeslot that is ridiculously competitive, The Walking Dead, Homeland, and Sunday Night Football are just a few direct competitors. People (myself included) are much more likely to watch those others live due to the higher risk of getting spoiled and then watch Leftovers on demand.

I’d be pretty confident they’ll get at least one more series even if the on demand numbers aren’t enormous.

Each episode is like its own little epic movie all linked in with each other. It really is head and shoulders above almost anything else on tv at the moment.

Yep...easily my favourite thing on TV at the moment.

I think it's relative unpopularity is probably linked to the people who got burned by Lost (I didn't watch Lost beyond the first couple of episodes) and feared this might be the same shaggy dog type story.

FWIW - I'd prefer if it ended after 3-4 brilliant seasons rather than dragging it out over 6-7 with the quality falling off every year

Same as. That was the biggest issue with Lost is that it should have finished after 4 seasons. But I do think Lindelof learned his lesson from Lost, which is so evident. Sure there are cliffhangers, but never once did it feel like filler episodes. Take, for example, Kevin wakes up in the lake and it jumped on to the ex-wife. That, in itself, was such an incredibly well written, acted, and thought out episode. Same with this most recent one.

Well if it's the Lost problem was getting answers and they've already stated that you're not going to get them all.

Aside from the departing itself everything so far that is 'supernatural' could be explained in other ways. I like the air of mystery behind them.

^ Exactly. People depart. It has happened before in pre-history (cavegirl). It's just that now we have religion, 'd'interweb and cable TV to confuse us. The departing may not even be supernatural, just something as normal as death - and we haven't been around long enough to properly record the previous occurrences. Apart from myths about floods, Gilgamesh and Noah etc.
Other than that all I see is panic and people either going to pieces or taking advantage of the confusion. As we do in times of crisis.

Anyway, this show is the most intriguing thing on TV right now, more so than even Fargo. It's so bizarre, yet so compelling. I know the producers have been at lengths to express that the show is called The Leftovers, and not The Departed, or The Missing. We're likely never going to find out what happened, as the show is about those left behind, and not the ones that went away. With that in mind, I don't get a Lost vibe from it, as with Lost, we never knew that the answers wouldn't come. Everyone expected a rational explanation, where as with this it seems unlikely that there can be a rational explanation for millions of people just vanishing.

In the latest episode, I think it starts to show just how crazy everyone is becoming due to not knowing what's happened. The people in the camp are certifiable, and Matt's probably not far behind. I think that Mary might have woken up and talked to Matt on their first night in Miracle, but that it was just a hallucination on the side of the road due to being hit in the head, plus his deep need to make it real. I wonder if John knows that the place is special, and that's why he goes around trying to shut up anyone confirming that it is a miraculous place, as that will just draw more in?

I'd like to see it get 3-4 good season, and then end too. Dragging it on for years will likely kill it, and not in a good way.

Yea. The woman in the cave (not saying cavewoman, because I'm almost certain it's present day) died. Not vanished.

I hope they never show where the vanished went. Because anything they can come up with will be disappointing compared to what people can imagine themselves.

I saw it as them showing that people have dealt with similar situations/feelings throughout history.

They link the cave woman having to deal with and move on from her people ‘disappearing’ (hers due to the avalanche but which must have been as confusing to her as a departing would be in present time) and also link someone taking on her child to the family taking on the ‘special’ baby.

Also, by showing that earthquakes in the area are normal throughout time, they’re giving the standard Leftovers nod that what happened at the lake and the damage to the roads (that people think are special enough to put in a box) can be easily explained.

The reason I reckon it's present time is that it shows just how far some people have gone since people vanished. We've seen that some people have gone pretty far from the reservation, but these are just so far gone, they've gone and become primitive.

What I mean though, is that I hope it won't start rambling in no direction the way Lost did.

Not in the last 10,000 years. However the showrunner did say that cavegirl came about because of a "previously on The Leftovers" seqment discussion that got a little trippy...ie...."let's go very previous".
It won't be explained, you may just have to take it on faith that it happens even eon or so. Halley's comet is famous because it pops by every 75 years or so. If it stopped by every 7500 years, not a lot of telescopes back then.

I can't watch the end of episode 5, can somebody spoiler it for me? I can't handle the way the series treats Christopher Eccleston's character, the trials of Job were nothing compared to this, for the character and the bloody audience as well, It's just emotional torture porn at this stage so I'm unsure if I can continue with this series in much the same way that I'm not that interested in watching (the far inferior) Walking Dead, which is just the highest rated snuff series on the planet right now.
I wonder at the chances of any kind of satisfying conclusion the show can have, because I can't see it getting renewed, thus making the time investing in it wasted, the audience for this sort of continual punishment is too small.
For the characters of Deadwood at least there was some hope, and there was always some humour also, but The Leftovers is just a dour, hateful, nihilistic series. I dipped back in against my better judgement and now I regret it.
Oh, and will somebody just give Christopher Eccleston two Emmy's right now, the second for his performance in his standalone episode in season 1 that was criminally overlooked also. Then again, I he wasn't such a damn fine actor I might have made it to the end of the episode.

Rubbish.

Best show on tv at the moment! I think most viewers are aware that almost nothing (including the departure) is going to be explained, and since we all know this and can except it, we can watch and not drive ourselves crazy with questions like with 'Lost' all those years ago.

Either sit back and just enjoy the show for what it is or simply don't watch.

And it's gonna get a third season, don't worry about that.

Great episode. Anything regarding the scientific approach to such an unfathomable event is also fascinating. I do wish they would get rid of the dead person appearing and talking to a character trope. Ever since Battlestar Galactica I've seen it in numerous shows and it just get a bit old.

Episode 6 was another cracker. Some incredible acting and its really hard to take your eyes off the screen for even a second. Nora & Erika were really strong, great chemistry between them.

It really is criminal this show is not more popular

Some absolute gold in that episode.

Erika's breakdown, while emotionally driven, was actually quite rational (as well as being useful for explaining some of the strange occurrences in Jarden).
Look forward to learning more about her "family" (father/in-law or whatever) and what he did resulting in a shooting.

The fact that a "Scientific" study has given weight to the idea that Nora is the vessel of a demon is fantastic. It just adds to the manic way people are affected by the departure, when the scientists first inquired about Nora's kitchen earlier in the season, I was expecting something a bit more grounded than Azazel! Scientists be crazy!

Interesting developments with Tom as well, considering how stable he was when we last saw him.

DSD interview was good again, good mirroring between the two mothers.

Justin Theroux is top drawer. His reluctant acceptance was near heartbreaking. He seems completely hopeless, and embarrassed by it.

The plot hasn't jumped forward a whole lot towards an end-game this season, but it really has developed the crazy world it's set in.

Loving it.

Another AMAZING episode. The tension between Nora and Erika was, Jaysus.

Lots of mondaying answers to the weird things people do in the town which I loved, no left unanswered questions there.

iPhones all over the gaff, since the first episode. The phone is a constant motif. Seems to be the way on a few shows though.

Given the low audience figures despite the quality of the show, it needs the cash where it can find it. And anything that leaves Apple out of pocket is fine by me.

The soundtrack/music is possibly the best on TV in recent memory. Absolutely brilliant.
The revamped theme tune is great. Loving the subtleties in how the image that fills in anyone who appears to have disappeared is actually a moving image (along with the actor's names too) such as a flowing river, a shooting star etc.
Almost signifying that these people who have disappeared are continuing their lives while the people who are still here are frozen in time, unable to move one.

Really enjoying the new series…..seem to be a week behind constantly as I need to ‘save’ it for nights when I’m not distracted or tired.

It is indeed hard to know exactly where the plot is going but for me it doesn’t really matter as the journey is so enjoyable.

The use of music is the best I’ve ever seen/heard on television….the Regina Spektor** song (“Nobody laughs at god”) in the recent episode was stunning imho.

Many shows try to shoehorn in tracks like that but it generally takes away from the action or (worse still) comes across as mawkish and sentimental.

**Had to google the song....I'm far from being a musical hipster-boffin
