Was on some site and saw this image for a settings button:

All I could think was 'why in the feck is there a picture of an impeller there?'

Sorry if this sounds stupid but do you use any antifouling?

And what type, just avoid it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,039 ✭✭✭✭neris

put anti foul on it last summer but shes been in the water all winter and hasnt been raced since december. will just keep getting lifted out for a power wash every few weeks over the summer

I'd slap on a coat of antifoul at next lift and thereafter use a small boy in a wetsuit, far cheaper than a hoist. (That's what kids and grandkids are for!)

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,819 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

That's ridiculous growth for over a few winter months.

Every time you powerwash you'll strip more of the antifoul off.

If I were you I'd keep it out, and do a proper strip back and two coats of decent antifoul now.

Have you seen the rates small boys in wetsuits charge these days?

We employed one last year (on behalf of a friend who'd wrapped a spinny sheet around a propellor) and he cost a bloody fortune! AND didn't get the sheet off the prop!

Avoid those 'rich' waterfront clubs and pay by results, Heidi, it's the only way!

Where are you getting a lift out for €40? What size boat?

So a while back I bought a boat.

Went to collect it yesterday as the trailer had been reconditioned and was ready for road travel:

    Arrive at yard.
    Think about dropping mast.
    Start to drop mast.
    Think more about dropping mast
    Try again.
Consider sailing the boat in situ.
Requisition every person in the place to help drop mast (this is a 23ft boat so should be easy and should have been doable with 2 people... ha!)
Fight the damn mast all the way down to 45 degrees
Fight the damn pivot out of the shoe
    Get nutted by popping mast
    Rig boat for road travel

    Start the drive home
Blow tire on trailer motorway. No spare for the trailer

Deposit boat in a nice farmer's yard

Think about how I'm going to sort this...

Put ad on ApolloDuck for boat!

So I did something new this weekend - I sailed to a destination, rather than around a course.

Out foreign where I am, there's a beach resort on a small island about 2-3 miles offshore. A few of us in different boats (I was in the trusty Laser Pico) headed off to the island, pulled up on the beach, had a beer, and raced back.

A great experience - I really feel as if I have stepped up a level in my sailing this weekend.

And I won the race back.

    Incident Update
    8/6/2015

At 19.36 the unit were then tasked to a report of a jetskier who had not returned to Howth harbour. Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116 and Howth Lifeboat were also tasked. Howth ILB quickly found the jetski and it's rider about 1.5km off the East pier. The jetski had broken down. The casualty was not wearing a lifejacket or a wetsuit. The lifeboat returned the casualty and the jetski back to the harbour. An ambulance was requested as the casualty was suffering from hypothermia. All units were then stood down.

2 lifeboats, helicopter, a coast guard unit, an ambulance and a fire brigade all used in this

Guess what sailed motored around Killiney Bay this evening:) - the Dutch sail training brig Morgenster. Sails furled in a bight, some in a bunt, tut tut (just envious I'm not aboard!).

The one I saw in the marina had a dark hull and her mast looked a bit like an attempted pretzel.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,819 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

That was our fleet. Their mast went on the first downwind leg. An awful shame as they'd have been up there in the results.

I'm surprised more didn't go, tbh - it was fairly breezy out there!

Even more forecast for today

One of them was for seasick crew. Dunno about the others.

Apparently it was a consistent 30kts out beyond Bray Head. Can't say I blame them!
