You don't actually think they want to build these roads do you?

All these timelines for schemes '2026, 2028, 2027'....crazy.

This is all bull****. Blatant politiking. Make it look like something is happening...and don't spend much money in the process.

The length of time it's taking to get this scheme to ABP is frustrating as ****. Why isn't it being adequately resourced by Government? It's not a pet project or a vanity project

ABP submission in "early 2019" as per website now.

If this wasn't part of a Ten-t route, then it wouldn't even be on the drawing board.

Some signs have been put up on the n69 to warn of the bumps. Problem solved.

A headbanger of an article if ever I saw one

Also Q2 is fierce disappointing. It's now almost 5 years since this project started and it's still not with ABP

I think this was mentioned before but the article confirms that the new N69 to Foynes will be a dual carriageway, not single. Good news.

Fairly comical that when this opens the majority of traffic will be exiting the motorway onto a single carriageway straight into Newcastlewest and the other minority traffic will be onto a DC to Foynes.

It won't be long after the M21 opens that Newcastlewest will become the new Adare and the road between Rathkeale and Abbeyfeale will be saturated with traffic. I can see a particular rat run opening up for traffic heading to Tralee where traffic will exit the N21 at Reens Pike and back to Listowel via Athea/Ardagh, and onto Tralee via the N69. Listowel will be bypassed by the time the M21 opens. This road (R523) is totally inadequate for this kind of traffic.

Even worse that most traffic will turn off, as it does now, onto the current N20.

Well at least the M20 is in planning, even if it won't open until 2028 or so.

The scheme joining the M7 in both directions is more concerning. All M21, N69 (west of Askeaton) and M20 (eventually) traffic will join via a single lane onto the M7. Some will divert north to Shannon/Galway but considering the M7 around Limerick is already at capacity these interchanges will need to be upgraded to two lanes at least.

Add into that the 2,500 new homes being built in Mungret under Limerick 2030 and there is a real need to upgrade road capacity and access to the M7 and N18 around the city.

850, with 250 being built in phase 1. And with the location I'd say that local transport in the are will be a bigger issue.

True that. The M20 -> M7 slip already backs up to J2 (or futher if it's raining) in the evenings when Raheen and Dooradoyle start emptying out. The addition of the faster arriving M21 traffic and more trucks will put it under severe pressure.

When might the N69 between Limerick and Foynes actually be upgraded to dual carriageway - Is this on the same 2028 type timeframe?

Might it get brought forward given that sections on it have subsided so badly that driving it feel like a Tayto Park attraction?!

The N69 is not going to be upgraded. A new link road will be built between Foynes and the M21 at Rathkeale. This will also provide a link to the Askeaton bypass providing a new Askeaton-Foynes link

    Yes! It's terrible.

My proposed solution for the M7/M21 exit - a whirlpool

The only issue with the M7/N18/M20 interchange is the M20 -> M7 slip. The rest is ok.

A large scale upgrade akin to something in US cities that would cost as much as the M21 scheme itself is not on the cards.

You could put in a single flyover if it is just one slip. Like this elevated one (leaving the rest unchanged). Not expensive.

The Project website would be updated when that happens and it would be all over the local press.

Local politicians are now saying that the application to An Bord Pleanala has been delayed until Q4/2019. The website for the Scheme still says the application will be submitted in "early 2019".

Tom Neville said 4 weeks ago in the Dail it would be by the end of June.

If Q4 2019 is true that'll be 5 years and 9 months from appointment of consultants to ABP submission.

That is a huge delay. I can understand the delay of six months but the further delay to the end of year is crazy.

That's just plain embarrassing, has there been any official explanation give for the delays to date?

Sadly Tom was not given the correct information.

Hard to understand why there is so much slippage on their own self-imposed deadlines. All of 2019 effectively lost.

Last time around the 4 possible routes were announced in April 2009 and the Oral Hearing held in July 2010 - a mere 15 months from start of project to Oral Hearing.

No Oral Hearing before 2020 at this stage and probably no new road in time for the Ryder Cup 2026 if it comes to Adare Manor at all with the roads chaos in Adare. How the Mid West politicians are not up in arms is beyond me.

According to a poster over on Skyscrapercity the delay is at cabinet level. Every stage of all infrastructure projects over €100m has to be signed off by cabinet and as of yet, this hasn't happened.

Ross doesn't care about it and the West Limericks Minister of State Patrick O'Donovan is a waste of space.
