RTE mentioning at the end of their highlights show tonight that because of the new centralised media rights, their highlights show on Sunday can now show highlights of other European Qualifiers, not just Ireland, though they will obviously be concentrating on our group.

The question is are they showing the highlights of the matches in our group only or does it also include highlights from the other 2 groups also? The highlights programme is only 1hr.

No highlights show for the Monday and Tuesday games.

They'll probably show brief highlights of Northern Ireland's game but can't see them going beyond that to be honest.

The week of football is a good idea. Their reasoning to give the game more coverage makes sense. With qualifiers on Friday and Tuesday, the weekend was free for other sports to dominate the limelight.

I'm a but surprised that it's not like a mini-football festival where RTE would have rights to show games over each of the 6 days. ITV's rights sound interesting in that they include 10 games from other groups. With Ireland playing this Sunday for example. If there is a decent game on Monday or Tuesday, it'd be great to be able to watch it e.g.:

Monday: Switzerland v England or Austria v Sweden
    Tuesday: Czech Rep v Netherlands

The festival idea was what UEFA intended. It may look like it hasn't worked out that way but over the three day period Sky Sports will be showing 23 live European Qualifiers.

You have to remember that RTÉ would likely have no games at all were it not for the listing of Republic of Ireland competitive games, since Republic of Ireland games are part of Sky's package and Sky does have rights to these games here (albeit non-exclusively in the case of the Republic of Ireland (and only games involving the Republic)).

ITV's package should in theory be available for an Irish company to bid for but RTÉ probably couldn't justify using licence fee money to bid for games not involving Irish teams which would be of limited interest here. Surprised Setanta hasn't looked into it though.

That's it exactly. I'm surprised Setanta have not stepped in. They don't have to over do the coverage. For some games they just show hightlights at half-time and there is no studio analysis. As we all know, commentators don't have to travel to the match venues either, the commentary is sometimes done from Dublin!

Uefa will launch an invitation to tender in 35 european countries next week, including the Rep of Ireland, for the media rights to the Euro2016 finals in France.
CAA Eleven will invite bids from Albania, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey.

The invitation to tender will be launched on September 16, and bids must be submitted by October 24. The rights will be offered on a platform-neutral basis.

CAA Eleven is selling the rights on behalf of football's European governing body, Uefa.

I'd be very surprised if anyone other than RTE were to win that particular tender. Then again, I was surprised when TV3 won the RWC rights.

It would shore up an audience for TV3 for 2016. Particularly if they Champions League and Europa League are to go from terrestrial TV in Ireland.

RTÉ via an EBU umbrella agreement would be my guess.

So what's the point of this method of buying rights if the EBU are going to buy the rights as normal?

The EBU collectively negotiates TV rights on behalf of its members that want them to do so. It reduces the workload on both broadcasters and rights holders who would have to negotiate with maybe 30 smaller nation PSB broadcasters. When the EBU wins rights to various events we know they'll be available on FTA TV if RTÉ chooses to buy them.

There is no guarantee that they will win the rights as we saw for the Olympic Games rights for 2014/2016 when they lost out to SportFive, other media groups can can bid for any available media rights. RTÉ has the rights to broadcast all of Ireland's 2016/2018 football qualifiers home and away via an EBU umbrella agreement for 30 national broadcasters with UEFA.

Still trying to figure how this new method changes anything for the FAI. If EBU negotiate collectively and are successful where does that leave smaller broadcasters in smaller countries such as TV3 and UTV Ireland? Unlike RTÉ would choose not to buy the rights.

Quaranteed income over the period of an agreement (approx €10m p.a. for the FAI). The national associations displayed their satisfaction with the centralised rights process by renewing it for the 2020/2022 qualifiers earlier this year.

It wouldn't exclude them bidding individually for national rights. I suppose it would be like RTÉ bidding against Sky for a particular event.

Thought this had been done already but BBC is reporting that they and ITV have agreed a deal to broadcast the Euro 2016 finals in France. They are one of 4 remaining UEFA countries to agree terms for the upcoming final tournament, the others are Italy, Russia and Greece.

Also they are the first UEFA country to be awarded broadcast rights to the UEFA 2020 finals. These finals are spread across 13 European host cities including Dublin (4 matches) and London (semi-final & final host).

UEFA statement on the BBC/ITV rights
    Thursday 22 October 2015 16.01CET

UEFA announced today that long-term UEFA partners BBC and ITV have been awarded the media rights in the UK in a combined deal for both UEFA EURO 2016 and UEFA EURO 2020. The two-tournament deal ensures free to air coverage for every match of the respective tournaments.

"We are delighted to reach an agreement with the UK’s leading free to air broadcasters ITV and BBC. Both partners have in-depth experience of broadcasting the UEFA European Football Championship," said Guy-Laurent Epstein, marketing director of UEFA Events SA, when commenting the deal.

He further added that "of course it is great news for English, Welsh and Northern Irish fans, who will be able to follow their respective teams' performance at UEFA EURO 2016 in an unrivalled manner through BBC's and ITV's cutting edge coverage.

"Finally yet importantly, this deal adds to the coverage and in-tournament excitement for UEFA EURO 2020, where the UK will host a total seven matches: four in Glasgow and both semi-finals and the final taking place in London at Wembley. All in all, this is a very positive agreement for all football fans in the UK."

The agreement covers exclusive live and delayed rights across all BBC and ITV platforms, along with magazine and highlights programs. The extensive distribution for each tournament across the BBC’s and ITV’s linear and digital assets means audiences in the UK will have unparalleled access to every match.

Look, when your posting the same post in two threads, I think it's a good indication that one thread was enough in the first place.
