UTV having highlights of N. Ireland's qualifiers makes interesting reading as UTV have not covered any OB sporting events for donkey's years. In fact all we have had for a long time now on UTV is evening sports desk on 'UTV Live'. I wonder will UTV include highlights of both Scottish and Welsh qualifiers after they have shown N.Ireland's match?

England - BSkyB, live away England qualifiers if drawn against Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland or Rep. Ireland

ITV will also be able to broadcast live the away qualifier against the home nation if it involves England according at the same time as Sky.

That's correct, ITV have the England home and away games live but Sky will only have the "home nation's" home game if playing against England but not the "home nation's" away game against England. All part of the broadcasters agreement with UEFA I guess.

I'm not 100% sure if the Rep. Ireland will be regarded as a "home nation" for the purpose of this agreement if we're in the same group as England.

Its a long time since UTV did a sport OB, the last one was the Milk Cup highlights well into the 2000s but even that went to the BBC eventually. Not sure if they'd even have the capacity to do one now though I suppose they could just do off-tube commentary of Sky's coverage. The last big sporting event UTV did coverage of in their own right was of Ireland's games in the 2007 Rugby World Cup, they could have done so for 2011 too but didn't bother.

Poor Wales though will probably not get any terrestrial highlights now though except maybe as a 2 minute block at the end of the England highlights. When England played Wales last ITV gave it the full England treatment with no concession made to the fact that ITV were the host broadcaster in Wales as well as England. In previous years ITV Wales would have opted out but not now.

I'm not sure either - from my reading above they are - but if not the alternative would be that both ITV and Sky (as well as RTÉ!) would have rights to England v Republic of Ireland. Its unlikely to come to that anyway as the two teams are rarely drawn together and have not been since UEFA Euro'92. Its a bit unfair though, that ITV can show England's away games against Home Nations but Sky cannot show the Home Nations away games v England.

Just seen this piece from the pdf above:

    Centralisation of rights by UEFA:
For TV reasons, England, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands shall be drawn into groups of 6 teams.
The last team to be drawn among the remaining teams in Pot 1 will be allocated to Group I composed of 5 teams.

So it seems that the major teams have "bought" their way into playing more international competitive matches - ensuring that they are not left in the group of 5.

It reminds me of Eurovision.

England didn't draw any other Home Nations, so no need to worry about Sky and ITV sharing matches. Republic of Ireland and Scotland drawn in the same group, but Sky have both teams rights (and RTÉ in case of Republic of Ireland games).

No sign of the new European Qualifiers branding at all during the draw - the Euro 2008 theme music was used.

One interesting thing about the fixture list from a TV POV is that Sunday 11th October 2015 marks the first time in a long time that the Republic of Ireland football and Ireland rugby teams will play matches on the same day, back to back. The publicans will have a field day.

Lads whats the deal with these centralised rights? - how exactly does it work? - has for instant RTÉ got access to all qualifying rights over the continent (all England, Spain, Italy etc. matches)? or is it just games involving Ireland?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,596 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

the rte deal is part of the EBU deal
    http://www3.ebu.ch/cms/fr/sites/ebu/contents/news/2013/04/ebu-awarded-media-rights-for-eur.html

it does not mention that they will have additional rights. The ITV and Sky deal give ITV england rights and live rights to other matches with sky getting scotland, wales, northern ireland and republic of ireland as well as access to 500 other matches.

yes true. I take it from reading it that its national teams only but maybe they can show other matches.

It would be a major coup for RTÉ if they could hand pick the biggest games across the continent to run alongside Irish games.

Centralised rights simply means UEFA sells the media rights for all matches instead of each national association doing their own deals with broadcasters. National associations are then paid from this central pool.

RTÉ and the other 29 national broadcasters which form part of the EBU umbrella agreement only have the live rights to the matches featuring the national team of their respective territory. Sky have the RoI broadcast rights for all other matches incl. the pay-TV rights for the RoI matches.

Ah OK thanks - I was thinking it was something like NBC in the US getting rights to all 380 Premier League games where RTÉ could as part of the EBU pick and choose any matches to broadcast across the continent.

Even if they could, I'm not sure they would give the airtime to showing all of the "Week of Football" either. Its alright for the World Cup and European Championship finals once every four years but to be giving over so much prime time space to football for an entire week on a more regular basis probably wouldn't wash so much.

Tbh looking at RTÉ Two's current schedule (full of repeats Only Fools, Top Gear etc.) live European Football would be a nice addition imo.

It's just as well the Poland game wasn't scheduled at 5:00pm, it would have left RTE (presuming they retain the RWC rights) with a massive scheduling headache and no doubt caused no ends of arguments. It will be the Republics last game of the qualifying campaign, but the France game is the crucial tie of Ireland's pool in the RWC.

Apparently RTE's League of Ireland highlights show MNS is an unexpected casualty of this deal, with the retooled version, Soccer Republic, being moved to late night. Not sure how the FAI managed to tie the two together in the first place, but go figure.

At the 2014 UEFA Congress at the end of March the member nations renewed the Centralised TV rights deal for a further 4 years from 2018. In addition to the Euro 2020 and World Cup 2022 qualifiers the new rights deal will include the new UEFA Nations League matches.

    http://www.uefa.org/about-uefa/organisation/congress/news/newsid=2079556.html

In an article in today's Sunday Independent, this is what John Delaney says about the new agreement
TV rights deals have pumped billions into the game. Delaney was instrumental in bringing a really smart centralised TV concept to Uefa, the European governing body. Uefa now negotiates overall contracts with all the TV companies to show matches and divvies up the money to national organisations like the FAI.

Previously a national organisation could have a bumper year if it played top teams such as England or Germany in qualification groups or an absolute financial carcrash if its group included less sexy teams like Greece or Kazakhstan. It was all about the luck of the draw. The new deal changes this completely.

"It's been brilliant. It delivers €40m to us over four years. It's guaranteed and that gives us real certainty over the finances," he says, sipping his water with a dash of lime.

Last month, the centralised TV deal was renewed from 2018 to 2022. Negotiations are set to start to determine the size of the FAI's slice of the action. "There will be an incremental. It'll be greater than €40m," Delaney adds.

"The old association – if you go back to the mid-Nineties – they'd only just created the principle of making money from TV. They would have only been getting a few hundred thousand a year. Now it's €10m a year. That's big money," says the chartered accountant.

It looks as if ITV have 10 other non-British Isles teams games - one for each round of games. So if you have ITV you will get the juiciest tie of the round for 8 of the rounds plus 2nd choice for the other 2 rounds, all England games, and all Scottish, Welsh and Norn Iron games in a highlights programme. Plus of course all Rep of Ireland games on RTE and I think a major across Europe highlights programme.

I think that is a comprehensive guide of what is available FTA. Of course if there is any other game you want to watch live there are any number of internet sites that will give you a free stream!:)
