Kilometres. Got rid of miles on odometer recently - there's continental version of instrument cluster over there. And car is in my possession since Oct 2007, driven only home - work and back again route. Longer trips very rarely.

Has a corolla ever failed an NCT??

    Always.

    Even yesterday mine's been failed.

Minor thing - one of tyre valves badly worn. So back home, swapped wheels (winters out, summers in) and away to test centre. Tester looked out through the window and printed a cert straight away. :D

Installed a dual usb outlet thingy. It was too small for a normal switch blank, but almost perfect for the spot where the a/c switch would live had our tax system not forbade its existence...

And a Lidl temp/clock thing. :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,503 ✭✭✭TrailerBob

And it works very well too.. I've checked it against readings from a weather station that's out the road from me and it's within 0.5℃

    I like to Lidl..:D

Not a patch on bmstuffs tasty work but did a bit of electrical work similar to Trailerbob. I HATE wires from chargers, satnavs etc hanging inside the car so something had to be done.

    I bought this thing

    IMG_20150307_150505.jpg

ripped out my stereo and heating controls

    IMG_20150307_150517.jpg

    IMG_20150307_150632.jpg

mounted the splitter and started chopping wires

    IMG_20150307_154934.jpg

    IMG_20150307_155524.jpg

hardwired it with its own fuse and relay and have the relay closing when the ignition is turned on. Tapped into the cig lighter for that.

    IMG_20150307_173246.jpg

    end result

    IMG_20150307_174843.jpg

    IMG_20150307_180036.jpg

and the new locations for my phone and sat-nav when these dash magnet ball things arrive from China

    IMG_20150307_171809.jpg

Replaced the manky coolant today too. Looks like the car is taking a leak :P

    IMG_20150307_121520.jpg

Will be getting a full valet done soon. Inside and outside are as filthy as that coolant

Did the engine mounts in my e39 today.

    Block under the sump!
    IMG_0983_zpscbngcito.jpg

The left hand side one was ruined -

    IMG_0978_zpsebsrmyyx.jpg

    IMG_0981_zpszeahppif.jpg

Shiny new one in! Did the right one also - but steering rack was in the way - not very easy to photograph

Next week - e39 control & thrust arms.

Today I sheared two wheel studs trying to take off the wheel to change brakes. Unhappy is an understatement

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭GvidoR

Changed the brake pads on the front on the swagon. As you can see in this before/after shot, it was long overdue. And yes, it was the same on both sides.

    16567468358_0f8c0eeb25_c.jpg

Then I swapped the rusty, old-shape wipers that did nothing but spread the rainwater across the whole windscreen for some much nicer flat wiper blades.

    16755034435_2a79a8ca00_c.jpg

Then, I plasti-dipped the front VW badge black and mounted it back exactly at who-gives-a-crap degree angle for extra swag points.

    16132724554_2ea8b59355_c.jpg

And then, I dewipered the rear. Before:

Question for BMStuff with the X5 retro-fit.

It looks like the control knob is now positioned a good bit forward of the original position - will the gear shifter thingie not make it awkward for the driver to use or read the buttons?

I hope new reg plates are on the list Gvidor? Would make a world of difference.

'Tis indeed. I mentioned that in the very first post I introduced the mighty Golf to the boardsies. :P

Some nice metal / pressed plates without screws are on the shopping list.

No pics, but replaced the starter on her MX5, absolute bastard of a job, whoever designed this should be shot.

    Don't scare me like that!
I thought mine was gone but I'm now thinking it's the alternator.

Alternator is slightly better, you will have to take out the engine strut behind it. After that its OK.

That is 100% OEM, I did not make that up.

I had to cut off the trim behind though in order to fit that controller called the TOUCH version, which only came in more recent BMW such as the F15 X5 and not that E70 X5 ever, so it would not fit. But now it does and this how it looks from factory.

Here is a 2012 X5 with the factory 7 buttons controller (Non TOUCH)

I have to say that looks class. I don't know why, but I've always had a soft spot for the X5, it's just so preposterous, you have to like it. :P:)

Just starting with the small stuff ;)

The badge had a nice stone chip in it and was annoying me to look at so an easy and cheap replacement.
    20150309_135415_zpsqnvi7iqm.jpg20150309_135833_zpssy3swmdd.jpg

Then while I'm waiting for all my new bulbs to arrive I decided to change the number plate lights. I had some Philips Bluevision LED 6000k that I had left over from my old car.
Here's the horrible oem yellow lights
    20150309_140119_zpsmafusodf.jpg

But when I took them apart it turns out they're not festoon but w5w bulbs  but at least I had a set of Philips Bluevision W5W that came free last time I was ordering stuff.
    20150309_140357_zpsasl4wnoq_edit_1425911123673_zpsuydgay8t.jpg

And here they are in, not much better but they'll do for now. And yes the car is manky, needs a wash!
    20150309_140722_zpsensl4kxg.jpg

So I also enabled the video in motion for my CCC unit. Had to enable it in the CAPPL and CAS modules with ncs expert. Turned on alarm chirp when locked too.

Loads more to do, I've an interior led pack on the way, all the bulbs as mentioned and then got a cheap obdii HUD to see how it looks. Original would cost over 2k to retrofit, far too much.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,316 ✭✭✭lafors

Got some more of the bulbs today...
Philips Whitevision H7 & OSRAM Cool Blue Intense HB4

The High beams (H7) were easy enough to replace even with big hands!

The Fogs (HB4) were a pain the the ring! The passenger side is a nightmare with the washer fluid tank in the way from the wheel arch. Drivers side wasn't as bad, not much in the way.

I think the H7 are still too yellow in comparison to the xenons.
    Fogs look better than stock.

    Before:

Will wait until it's dark to take another photo with them all on.

So today I replaced the two studs I sheared on Sunday

Much easier than I thought it would be. Turns out Toyota left a small groove in the dust shield behind the brake disc just the right size to remove wheel studs. I was sure I'd have to take off the hub.

I would also like to almost take back the mean things I said about main dealers. New wheel studs from Toyota - €4 each

Oh yeah, managed to finish the original job too, new front discs and pads, courtesy of micksgarage sale

Lifted up the rear seats and saw this.

    16165528293_d3fb4a08d7_c.jpg

Out came the gloves and the hoover. Got all of this crap out (some of it was not visible in the first picture)

    16598088840_682548c2a1_c.jpg

    Ta-dah!

    16163149974_73648c7cb3_c.jpg

I also cleaned out most of the interior but it needs more work and it's too sunny to take good pictures as well.

brought the celica into the 21st century today. got this on fleabay for €14 posted and it cost €10 to cut it. the locksmith said these are prone to braking and tbh, maybe it is, the quality isn't unreal but for €24 all in, i'm willing to take the chance because nothing says poverty like having to stick your key in the door to open it.

old key held together with electrical tape:

Nice. How did you attach the actual key to the release button?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

it's a new item. the flip key comes with a blank key blade that you have to get cut yourself, you can't use the old key blade in the flip key.

I can vouch for the locksmith here. Bought two, yes TWO fleabay Toyota keys (same as your original key) when I had my corolla and both snapped, one of them the first time it went into the ignition barrel. Ended up giving the lock doctor €50 for one of his own stock cut the third time round. Saying that though, the fleabay Volvo flick key is holding up well a year later.

Oh. I have a useless VW flip key and hoped I could do the same thing with my key. This is what mine look right now. The middle ones are for the Golf. :P

Does the golf have remote central locking? A bit pointless otherwise. My Passat (98) had a laser cut (like the top one in your pic) factory flip key...and a second key for the passenger door...and a third for the boot. Should have just did a Mr bean on it with a deadbolt and padlock :P

    Stupid Passat
