Today I DIDN'T do this to my car

Mostly because of a parent teacher meeting

So my 740 is in for some surgery today, once again with the great guys at Perfect Car Dundalk. Still further work to do tomorrow so am trundling about in a 318 for now.

As usual they stand over their work and are only too happy to show the job at hand, here are some pics already.

The car was leaking coolant at a huge rate by the time it went in this morning, about a litre a day. Leak is due to a failure of a coolant pipe o-ring at the front of an aluminium coolant pipe that traverses the centre of the engine, front to back, located under the intake manifold. To replace the o-ring, the pipe needs to be replaced. Replacing with the same factory pipe is a nightmare, as the pipe slides in from the front of the block, which requires 50-60 hours of labour as the entire top half of the engine needs to be removed.

Solution is a collapsible coolant pipe which means just the intake manifold and valley pan come out, 3-4 hours labour. Cut the old pipe out and screw the replacement in. Pipe is €600, but that's better than €3k-€4k in labour alone.

I supplied the Bimmerpipe, OEM water pump, thermostat, housing, new intake manifold gaskets and water pump pipe.

They're also replacing the alternator bracket oil gasket which is loosing me half a litre of oil every 4-5k km. That alone takes hours on end because of where it's located, might have pics of that tomorrow.

Decided it was time to actually figure out what these wonderful lights meant :pac:

    66wTgG.jpg

Made an investment and got myself this:

    5LNzrq.jpg

It's no INPA, but it's able to read plenty of sensors and reset them... all for only €50

So the real question... What's wrong? With the lights, and being a BMW it was always most probable to be a sensor issue. More clues came with the cold weather - lights went away below 0C, strange! But again pointing towards sensors... I could have narrowed it down because I still had a working speedo, cruise control and ABS

    8qDJDr.jpg

Yup! Wheel speed sensor. Time to order a new one...

Had to change a wheel speed sensor on my e46 not that long ago, roughly about €100 from micksgarage.

It was a very easy change, 15mins, albeit mine was a rear wheel so not sure if it will differ much. Some very good DIY's out there when I was looking.

Looks like I did, they had nothing cheaper on their site at the time, plenty cheaper ones there now. Needed it quick at the time as well for an NCT.

Where did you get yours for future reference?

FYI always check that website first for any BMW parts :)

Cheers, are they generally OEM parts?

They stock Meyle, Lemforder, Febi, TRW, FAG, Jurid and a few others. Lemforder/TRW/FAG/Jurid are all OE suppliers, Meyle HD are uprated replacement components (stronger wishbone bushes/mounts, replaceable balljoints, thicker droplinks, etc). Febi are a well known brand too.

They don't sell any shíte :)

I'm surprised mine hasn't had any blown sensors yet, with the amount of problems people have with them on E39's I thought I'd be doing all 4 :pac:

My problem turned out to be the brake light switch, which I knew for months but never replaced :P

Ah go away will ya, don't be saying that :pac: Think all that's left is PDC faults which should be fixed with the bodywork on Monday.

You having the parking sensors replaced? or just getting the faults cleared? Cos I should be able to do the latter :)

I thought I was going to get more done today, but oh well...

Replaced the gear knob and the leather bit. Before:
    16540898179_169184d8e9_c.jpg

    Out with the old...
    16539451768_96e38c6c6f_c.jpg

In with the new (and yes, it's brand new and genuine Harlekin knob :))
    16104687444_5f6a48baac_c.jpg

And replaced the head unit that was there.
    16519728527_ceffb8da71_c.jpg

    16540892039_0abaa72f9a_c.jpg

It had wires for an iPod in the glove box zip-tied so I had to unscrew that thing there to get the wires and the head unit out.
    16701110336_a4b90c4188_c.jpg

Ta-dah! You can buy it off me if you want. :pac:
    16539586140_3f292f678f_c.jpg

And now my Kenwood is in there. Unfortunately there was no wire harness there, instead the cables were just wired up for that head unit, luckily however it was also a Kenwood so it used the same connector. I have a feeling that it's not wired up correctly since it doesn't turn on and off with the ignition.

Considering how popular VWs are, you'd think the various apes wiring car kits and radios in them would have got the hang of finding a switched 12v. I'd say half of them fitted with car kits have the wires pulled. "Tid never worked right".

Are you sure? I thought they were 'harlequin' like the clown or the fish, not 'harlekin'... could be wrong.

    it's the little things.

the celica came with a parrot kit which i assumed didn't work. it wasn't mentioned in the ad and the owner never mentioned it, there was also no paperwork for it in the glove box. i had been intending to take it out because it looked a bit **** stuck to the head unit  but after much time guessing the pin code, it works :) now just to mount it all fancy :)

    where it was:
    20150306_153155.jpg

    first attempt of fixing it:
    20150306_155306.jpg
    20150306_155634.jpg

i was pretty happy with this, but i thought it upset the clean lines of the dashoard as it looked well from the drivers side but a bit "sticky outy" from the passenger side. the cable was also a bit pinched coming out the side of the dash.

    second attempt here:
    20150306_161445.jpg

seeing as i don't smoke and i keep my parking meter change in the cup holder, i think this is a much tidier location :)

I'd assume VW's have red and yellow wires for stereo power. Can't remember if my Passat did which is of same vintage as your Golf. Switch them around if it does. That should sort the problem.

Edit: The hard wired kenwood loom probably has red and yellow wires spliced with the brown/red and red/white VW wires
