    That is insane.

I know I remember when it happened, paid more than a passing interest to it, now I know why.

I often wonder what it would have been like to be gay growing up in 70/80's Ireland and glad I grew up when it was legal.

Tomorrow it will be 20 years since homosexuality was decriminalised in Ireland- I was 13 then. I find it so hard to fathom it being illegal, even if it still somewhat taboo where I live.

...for a fee, I could go round your way and oppress you....

Just wondering, was the law enforced up until that time i.e were people actually being arrested for being homosexual or was it just a dud law for a number of years

Surely this is something every reasonable progressive-minded citizen should celebrate?

It wasnt really enforced but inspite of that fact every court refused to decrinalise it and robinson etc had to go to the european court of human rights to force legislators hands.

No. We had no homosexuals in ireland before then.

True dat, I always thought David Norris' persona as a raging literary queer was a quite brilliant construct designed to challenge attitudes towards homosexuality.

Abit of topic, but maybe someone in this thread could help me.

Can anyone explain why some gay men talk like women? I cant seem to find an answer anywhere.

Some adopt a character which includes a tone which is best described as "modern American sit-com" but not female per se.

I think some of the gay boys are a lot more in touch with their feminine side than straight people.

Still it was a great step for equality.

http://www.glen.ie/news-post.aspx?contentid=14972&name=celebrating_the_20th_anniversary_of_the_decriminalisation_of_homosexuality Extracts of the bill passing through the Dáil and Seanad

This was a brilliant thing and long overdue, but i loath documents that only show one side of the story.

Anyone have a link to the full debate notes? Would like to read some opposing speeches (if there were any).
