The Who fanbase depresses me sometimes. Reading comments from "fans" in articles about Capaldi being the frontrunner. Most of them are "eww, no he's too old & ugly".

Personally i'd love an older Doctor, and having seen The Thick of it Capaldi definitely has the acting chops to pull it off.

It's so frustrating! Like if they go any younger this will be happening.

Elements of the "fanbase" will complain no matter what.

The Who fanbase in particular is never sparing with the venom. I'm often left speechless with the sheer hate that spews from it. It's up there with football tribalism.

Nothing particularly unique to Dr. Who though, you'll find the same minority of morons in any other cultural entity with its own enthusiastic fan community. Some people just go too far. In all cases, the best solution is to simply ignore them; they eventually go away and are usually just looking for attention / validation anyway.

The 'too ugly' thing is a new one to me, I will be honest. Tennant was the only actor, even of the new batch, that could have been called handsome in any modern sense (and the numerous works deviantart are certainly testament to that); I don't get it.

Those are the new fans, the "Doctor wubs Rose" squealing fan-girls.

I doubt they've even heard of the Talons of Weng-Chiang or could even name the first eight Doctors.

But, all-importantly, without the physical violence.

And our scarves are cooler. :D

Here now, I have no idea whose Talons those are, and I probably couldn't get all 8, but I'm a long way from a shrieking fan-girl - the burgeoning neckbeard, for one thing.

Do us all a favour and don't lump all new-Who fans in with the crazy Tennant chasers.

So if Peter Capaldi was cast you'd go "eww, no he's too old & ugly"?

Because if not, then I wasn't referring to you.

    Isn't it John Hurt?

If Capaldi takes the role two things will happen - one I'll start watching and he'll last no more than two series/years.

Even if you were she-raphael, who are we to decide how someone else gets to enjoy a tv programme? Is that not the exact same thing we're complaining about them doing?

(Bear in mind I too would like an older Doctor, in saying that)

I also thought that it would defiantly be someone I had never heard of before but I've been thinking BBC recently seem to have been slightly americanising the show more action and stuff nothing over the top but still. I wouldn't be surprised if they brought a back up actor from something like Game of Thrones or Harry Potter...still an English actor but someone that America knows like nobody who was a main character but someone that will have a bit of recognition with people and might help increase their fans in the US

I hope I'm wrong but its a possibility

Unless it's a clever bit of misdirection. :D

They do love their misdirection. Like I said though I really really doubt it's him.

It depends on what type of sites you visit really. I frequent tumblr and the who fanbase on there annoys me for the complete opposite reason, they refuse to criticise the show in ANY way and they attack those who do. They treat Moffat like a good. There a few people like me knocking around who feel the show isn't what it used to be but we are definitely the minority.

Oh I do like the idea of Capaldi. I thought Matt was a good actor but I think after him and Tennant someone older would be a nice change of pace. I highly doubt the Doctor will be female nor do I mind but on the off chance it is I hope that they either have a male companion. Somehow a female Doctor and
a female companion doesn't work in my head. not sure why just think the show needs a balance somehow.

According to friend of mine someone they had offered the job to had been leaked last week but no-one knows if he accepted it yet. From what my friend said sounds like it's someone well known. Of course it could be complete bull****, these things normally are...

Odds on Daniel Rigby from the BT broadband adverts have risen sharply (and out of nowhere: hadn't seen him mentioned at all before).

At this stage every British actor currently active seems to have been suggested.

Heh heh. Tumblr is so weird. It's the most easily offended online space I've ever encountered. And they don't just get offended they get FURIOUS. It is pretty much full of kids though.

Then there's the other place... which I find difficult to bear as the negativity is almost overwhelming.

I like it here. I think I'll stay here. :)

I don't think I'll watch the show live on Sunday, I have plans. But I'll record it for Monday.

I'd love to see Idris Elba.

It might have something to do with the fact I watched every episode of Luther in three days and got used to seeing him in a coat, but it could work....

He'd be soooo brilliant as the Doc IMH. Sadly, not ginger though. That said I knew a bloke from the Cameroon who was ginger so being of African descent shouldn't be a barrier(the poor buggers. No one escapes the ginge) and a dye job wouldn't be outa bounds. :)

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

I'm still rooting for Damien Molony for the role.

OP, this was mentioned in the very next thread.

Admins, I think we should probably merge these two threads together so there aren't two discussions going on come Sunday evening...

Wonder if Capaldi's shot to the top of the bookies charts has anything to do with the character he plays in World War Z -http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0134922/. In the film Ruth Negga also plays a W.H.O. Doctor.*

*That stands for World Health Organisation for the dim lads at the back.
