Given how little likelihood there is behind anything relating to being trends coming to pass I'm not sure this is really a spoiler but best to err on the side of caution I guess.

    Hahahaha.

The image I have in my head right now. The exact same character, but a time lord.

    Brill.

Ha, in response to the rumour off that link, I will simply quote Betteridge's law of headlines:

"Any headline which ends in a question mark can be answered by the word 'no' [...] they know the story is probably bullsh*t, and don’t actually have the sources and facts to back it up, but still want to run it"

I've heard that the new Doctor will be unveiled in a live show presented by Zoe Ball on BBC1 this Sunday. Past Doctors, apparently, will also be appearing.

The person who told me this previously assured me that the new Doc would be revealed at the DW prom a fortnight ago, so a modicum of salt may be required.

    Apparently big announcement at midnight

    http://tennantnews.blogspot.it/2013/08/doctor-who-announcement-coming-tonight.html

Rumor is split between it'll nee who the next doctor is and it'll be the date of the doctor who confidential that announces who the new doctor is!

More "believe it if you like" info from my source.

He says that the billed episode of Mastermind on BBC1 at 7pm on Sunday is a bit of misdirection and the new Doctor announcement show will be shown instead.

He was right about Matt Smith's casting before it was announced, but he's been wrong on many other things.

Yea heard that on a lot of sites... Apparently Zoe ball is presenting it with moffet and some old doctors

    Karen Gillan tweeted earlier that
the new Doctor will be revealed this Sunday
. She's since deleted the tweet though.

More rumours, this time from the internet:

Gallifrey base thinks that Chris O'Dowd has been cast, which would be nice. Another name doing the rounds is Peter Capaldi.

Apparently the Sunday show is to be filmed live before an audience of Doctor Who fans in costume. What could possibly go wrong? Just imagine if fandom disapproves of the choice and riots!

If it's anyone we've heard of, or a 'brand' name, I'll eat my hat*

    * I don't own a hat, but one can be procured :p

Can't see a midnight announcement on Twitter for a role as infamous as this..

.. I'd say an air-date for a Confidential (or whatever they'll call it since that was axed) announcing a new Doctor is more likely.

I like the idea of Chris O'Dowd (provided he can also do dramatic acting) but since is career has taken off in recent years I can't imagine it's a role he would go for now. Maybe before Bridesmaids but not now.

I must remember to unfollow this thread before Sunday. I've decided to take on the insane task of avoiding finding out who's been cast before the regeneration.

A live broadcast? Wow, that's ... showy. Hmmm. Well, to parrot Neil Gaiman, all I ask is that after the reveal I'm scratching my head wondering who this guy is & how could he possibly be the Doctor.

I'm expecting to last about five minutes if I'm honest. Even if I stay off social networking sites and tell people not to tell me I'll probably see it on the cover of some tabloid or overhear a stranger's conversation.

I doubt there'll be any avoiding it. They even had it on the Today FM showbiz news this morning that it's going to be announced on Sunday. They spoke about it for around a minute.

A minute on morning drivetime Irish national radio -- it's not a cult show anymore, is it?

It's on the front-page of RTE, Guardian and a bunch of other sites too; when you factor in the explosion in popularity in America, Who is a pretty big deal these days.

    <hipster>
Pffh, I followed the show when it wasn't cool

That's why I have a suspicion he's going to be a relatively well known name. A "who??" moment(no pun) from a live crowd would be a damp squib and a helluva risk.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

Yeah, but how famous would the person need to be for it not to be a damp squib in that scenario. Even if it were Ben Daniels or Peter Capaldi, there'd still be a good portion of the crowd scratching their heads. :P

I reckon what they'll do is go through the audition process. Interview all the folks about Matt leaving, have a bit in the middle about the 50th anniversary, then a pre-amble to the announcement with all the same folks being interviewed about what drew them to the new guy without naming him. Convince everyone that it was the perfect choice, then wheel him out with streamers or something falling from the sky and play out with the theme tune.

Do we know that there'll be a live crowd though? I don't see it mentioned anywhere, and I simply assumed the 'Live' bit meant it'll be a streamed interview with Moffat & Smith before the new guy is shown onto set for an introduction.

I like the idea of Chris O'Dowd...

Apparently he's Tweeting about it, which suggests it isn't him.

Unless it's a clever bit of misdirection. :D

I suspect live is live (interviews)..a crowd: I'm not so sure.

That said, you find a crowd of whovians dedicated enough, they would probably applaud a cat being made the next Doctor if they happen to be in the room at the time :P

there has been fierce speculation about who will be cast as the new Doctor, Miranda Hart

Oh wow, I'd die of laughter if she was chosen as the next Doctor.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 15,919 Mod ✭✭✭✭smacl

David Thewlis would make a decent Doctor, although Ayoade would also be great.

    Yay for Sunday!

If it's Peter Capaldi I will literally wet myself with joy.

Also, loving the graphics in that promo. Very retro who, although I can't put my finger on which era.
