To be fair there was a time when it was ridiculously expensive

I remember back about 10+ years ago, I'd be going to Dublin for a gig and I'd pop into Sound Cellar for my metal CDs :D I'd have a look in HMV and their metal section was a joke, if they had anything that wasn't mainstream, they'd slap an "Import" sticker on it and charge over 30 euro if not more. I remember a Blind Guardian album that they were looking for €39.99 for, that Sound Cellar had for €20

It was a joke back then, but they copped themselves on big time

That was kinda my point, many people went in there once or twice years back and then never returned yet were happy to tell everyone how HMV were riping them off. Not only were HMV competitive with all others but when they nearly went under, a number of smaller distributors cut back on their upcoming releases as without HMV then all there really is amazon and Tesco, giants who have unmatched buying power.

A bridal boutique called The White Room is going in opposite Jigsaw Galway. Round the corner from revenue and radisson

An Pucan has been painted yellow out front and the inside looks ready to go. Hope the frontage is just an undercoat 'cos it looks awful.

Agree it's ugly .. but sadly not an undercoat, the sign-writer has been. Definitely called An Pucan again.

Word on the street, according to Mr O'B, is that they're opening tomorrow.

Some good news for the House Hotel staff, the hotel will be reopened under the management of the receiver (so no new owners yet) and they intend on rehiring the staff.

They hope to have it open for race week.

I think Java John's coffee shop is now up and running across from the Abbey on Francis Street, at least it looked open when I passed by today.

And The Salthill Hotel is in receivership apparently, but still operating as normal for the moment.

Nope. It used to be the loos that had me calling the place "Am Puking". Now it's the exterior colour "scheme" (used in the most generous sense of the word).

Hope to check out the interior over the weekend though, and have better things to report.

Great to have HMV back, nothing better than spending an hour browsing through the stock and i have to say that mos thing I looked at were cheaper than amazon. Picked up two Blu-Rays for far cheaper that what amazon are asking for them and saw loads more that were half the price of what amazon are selling them for. The vinyl selection is really good and it would seem that they are taking the UK price and sticking the euro symbol before it. Saw a lot of stuff that was 15 or 20 in the UK stores for 15 and 20 here, which is a heck of a saving.

It is. Not a bad location either, it looks like they're getting a good number of "mature" folk who've been across the road.

I always wondered about the viability of the place. That said, my daughter loved it and it seemed like very good value for the entertainment value she got out of it. It will be missed.

I was in there but it was a wee bit busy, so probably going back for a proper look during the week, but noticed that Carcass - Surgical Steel was something like €11.99 where it's over £18 on Amazon.

I was only in there for a few minutes, combination of the big crowd and being in a hurry meant that I only had a quick browse but the pricing seemed great. There seemed to be a real sense that HMV of old was back and it's fantastic to know that now there's a place in Galway where you can walk in and find something a little less mainstream. I saw all of the Arrow Blu-Rays in there, something which nowhere else in Galway would stock. Same goes for many of the rock and metal stuff downstairs, Zhivago have a pretty poor and over priced selection.

staff at HMV seem eager to help customers out - kind of like an americanisation of the experience a bit but I assume it's because it has just reopened and management have asked them to get stuck in, in a few weeks we may be able to browse in peace again

Any vinyl to be had in HMV?

    What? Why?

They're a niche label who sepcialise in genre cinema. Being able to walk into a store in Galway and buy the Blu-Ray of Big Trouble in Little China or the like is quite nice.

Have to say that I didn't have anyone disturbing my browsing. One member of staff asked me if there was anything in particular I was looking for and when I said I was just browsing she apologized for disturbing me. Nothing pushy or annoying about it and certainly nowhere near as intrusive and irritating as staff in PC World or the like.

Quite a bit to be found in there and considerably cheaper than amazon and the like for many.

Not sure what that has to do with Arrow. I only asked because I thought it was funny that you seemed to imply it was niche or obscure in some way.

Well it is rather niche, no other store in Galway carry their releases which is why I said it was nice to be able to walk into a store and find them. And Big Trouble has a lot to do with Arrow considering that they are the company who released it on Blu-Ray.

Gannet Fishmongers have closed their Eyre Square outlet. Their others are unaffected.

And the butcher next door now has a big sign saying "Supplied daily by Galway Bay fisheries"

Always sad to see a business close down but I certainly won't miss the smell everytime I walk close to there
