That's one of my favourite razors. It's a 7/8ths blade but it feels really nimble due to how hollow the grind is and it's one of my razors I can actually get a good date on. It was made between 1865 and 1882.

It also takes and holds a great edge which is always a plus.

jpb1974, I have a feeling I know the razor brand, but it escapes me at the moment, what is it please..? :o

I think they're meant to be quite unforgiving open comb razors.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,017 ✭✭✭jpb1974

It's a Fatip, relatively cheap open comb razors and yes, can be unforgiving.

A few weeks ago I bought some Penhaligons English Fern shave soap at a 60% discount. To sum it up my feelings on the soap

Someone on another forum suggested I try mixing the crap stuff with a good unscented soap. This is where Nannys Silly Soap comes into it. I mixed 20g of the two as best I could using a bain-marie to test it out.

The result was very good. The soap performs well and still smells pretty good too.

Vote 4 Pedro sent me his shavette to try out for a few days and it got here this morning in time for my shave. It was a great shave but it's so light compared to a straight razor that I really had to concentrate on using no pressure. I'm hoping to try a full week of shaving with it and see how I feel about it after that. Early signs are encouraging.

    Thanks V4P.

I wish I could have used just one soap for a few years. I would have saved so much money.

How did you hone the razor? Coticule progression as the picture subtly suggests?

Set the bevel with 1000g naniwa chosera, then used the coticule with a fair amount of slurry to even out the bevel as best I could (warped blade). There's actually a small second bevel but it doesn't show in the pictures. On these old wedges I tend to hone into the razor a bit more than I usually would with a hollow ground razor just to ensure I get a good bevel and so I'm honing on fresh steel. Some of the steel in these older razors can be quite soft so I find if I hone into the razor a bit more than usual, I have less problems when I set my secondary bevel. But yes the majority of the work was done with my coticule using the dilucot method. It was then finished with around 10-15 laps on a welsh finishing slate.
