[Update, 7:57 p.m. ET] Doctors are "pulling ball bearings out of people in the emergency room," a terrorism expert briefed on the investigation told CNN's Deborah Feyerick.

i would imagine if there was circa 2000 people on the street in the vicinity, people would run without any thought of bringing their belongings. Gonna be a lot of rucksacks and bags left there and they'd all have to be treated as suspicious.

Ireland has long been associated with Boston. As recently as 2 weeks ago, more than 5,000 Irish people travelled there because Boston were hosting the 2013 World Irish Dancing Championships. I went, I stayed in the Marriott on Copely Street. I can't believe it happened so close to where I was. Boston is such a beautiful city.

This is beyond tragic. Those, poor, poor people. My thoughts and prayers are with those injured and those who have passed away. I can't imagine what they're going through.

Also, I'm thinking about the first responders. I imagine that some of the things they saw today will haunt them for the rest of their days.

There are more victims today besides those that died and were injured.

Praying for no further fatalities and speedy recoveries for those involved. I really can't believe it.

    RIP

Basically little pellets and debris that fire out with the explosion to cause more damage.

I hope you'll forgive the rant but its been welling up for some time.

I do care more about what happens in America than in other parts of the world, that goes for everything, I follow their elections, I follow their sports, their tv and pop culture. I wear American clothing brands, and purchase american consumer products I know American people and while I have never travelled there I hope to in the near future.

Following a terrorist attack in America isn't just a morbid fascination about the number of dead compared to a tragedy elsewhere. It's about the political implications of an attack on US soil. It's about watching carefully how political figures react to it. More people will probably die in my local hospital tonight than because of bombs in Boston but I don't measure the importance of news to me in numbers.

I am sorry I don't care so much about Iraq, but if you want to make this into a numbers measuring competitions why aren't you throwing in Aids in Sub-Saharan Africa, Famine in East Africa and disease in Southern Asia.

Doesn't strike as an outside muslim/al queda attack. More inclined to think it is a domestic terrorist with an issue with gun control. Especially with the "26 for26" aspect.

Ball bearings would be little pieces packed into an explosive.

When it would detonate, they'd fly out and cut right through flesh. The intent to cause as much damage as possible.

well you could pack like 500 small marble-like things in a bomb, when it goes off they fly at a high velocity in all directions and act almost like small bullets. So you end up with casualties from the blast and from the projectiles flying hitting people.

Some of the photos in the 'Photos that shook the world' thread are truly, truly horrific.

Really not for the feint hearted and probably not for the majority of people really. I'll be amazed if the death toll remains at two after seeing some of those photos

Would imagine that is what they actually planned, people running from the first explosion, get caught in the second. Was that not the tactic (for lack of a better word) in the Dublin bombings ?
It was, yeah. Strangely, the IRA were involved (and lost) a court case against Boston College today. Probably pure coincidence, but odd enough all the same. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2013/apr/15/ira-tapes-police-supreme-court

Has that press conference been postponed?

Read up on it earlier. Link for what is generally in these pipe bombs is here. Nasty stuff.

Images in the link are safe I would think.

I think pieces of the building itself would have done the damage . If a shop window is blown out then that's hundreds ( or more ) of sharp 1 inch thick, pieces of glass flying through the air as well as wood and metal frames , at something like 100 miles an hr .If ball bearings have been added to the mix then along with above is going to tear through human flesh a knife through soft butter

Twitter accounts like that are run by absolute pricks. Piggybacking a celeb with their handle and now a tragedy by tweeting pics for cheap RTs and follows.

Really wish they weren't given the time of the day

Some seriously sick people out there - within minutes there were twitter accounts that were saying that for every retweet, one dollar would be donated to the Boston victims. Its been reported that it was a boy rather than a girl. Cheap RTs alright Xavi

Press conference within the house from the hotel in Boston

Sorry hippy, if it makes you feel better I firmly believe charitable donations should be be utilitarian in terms of saving the most life. It's something I try do whenever I donate or raise for causes.

So when I care about human life, I try to care about it equally. All I was ranting about was that it's not the human life that makes the Boston story interesting to me.

Cut the crap. No matter how you look at it an attack on an American city is going to have more meaning to people here than another bombing in Iraq. Both are tragedies, no one is denying that but in Iraq bombings are almost a part of day to day life. Can you please stop trying to derail the thread just so you can spout from your high horse about how you value all life-equally unlike the rest of us.

The same tiny round balls what are used in mechanics and always been used by the military ,stuffed into hand grenades so as to cause as much damage to to the human body .
