Its a good fight for Conor. I think his last opponent was a tougher proposition. A nice KO here will only help to build his brand in the UFC and I reckon he'd get it in the first round.

well to be fair I think almost anybody who could credibly be matched with Conor at this point could be KO'd by McGregor in the first and we wouldn't be too surprised... and yes obviously Akira wants to take a big scalp - but he obviously thinks he can take him - there'd be no point in Akira callin out McGregor just to get an ass kickin - he's on a two fight UFC winning streak as it is his next fight is vitally important to his career... and I think he's a tougher fighter than people are saying. He's the right guy at the right time for Conor and I hope he takes it and kicks his ass in Boston and gets settled in the division.

Who else is there to match him with for Boston at 145? that isn't injured, already matched up or another pure wrestler or too high up or too low down the pecking order? Akira ticks all the boxes IMO.

Would be a good match for Conor, Akira is not up to much and would be a match that Conor could showcase his skills.

    it's everywhere

Conor hasn't responded yet? Is he going to bother do yez think? Wonder if there's a few phone calls going on between JK and Uncle Dana ?

He actually did respond a few hour ago to Akira's original tweet...

Interesting that he apparently has an opponent already for the Boston card, love to know who.

JK responded aswell asking Akira why hes calling out Conor when he's already matched up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Be like Nutella

wonder is it Poirier? Would've thought it bit early for that match up but if he says he's got an Opp and it ain't Akira then it very well could be.

5 / 2 in UFC... lost to Cub in Feb - needs a win.

    or Garcia maybe

Someone actually already mentioned Garcia in a tweet as an opponent for Conor and he had this reply for Garcia...

Seems like a few guys want a piece of the hype!

    Couldn't stand Akira on TUF.

The Boston card will be a fairly Irish event so I would say a lot of fighters would love to get Conor as an opponent due to the attention he will bring to the occasion.

Garcia is likely to be released soon. Dana pretty much said that he has lost five straight under Zuffa.

Cormier is saying he wants on the Fox Sports 1 card... could be a Big Country v Cormier card? Right time, Cormier wants on it and considers Big Country a decent opponent for him right now...would be a cracker of a fight I think and a great card to get on.

Garcia ain't the guy so... and I'm not feelin the Akira Fight ever since Conor says he has an Opponent already - just needs contracts signed.

If it's higher up the ladder than Akira then you're surely talkin Poirier? Tough fight... still think Conor would ping him though.

Of course. Brain fart moment there from me. :o
Was thinking of the FX card for some reason, and not UFC on fox sports.

    Poirier
    24 and 5'9''
    5 UFC wins,
    great subs,
8 first round finishes... hot sh1t.. took Swanson all the way.

The man likes to stand and brawl but I don't think his technique is on par with Conors but he has game everywhere. Seems to bite down and throw - not a good plan with McGregor who picks you apart from angles til he catches you.

Here's a HL if anyone interested - his seated triangle/armbar is sick... know a guy who pulled that off in the MMA league years back (Scorpion King)

I've said this already and I'll say it again.......

I hope it's not Poirier. He's VERY good! It's a huge step up.

You're right. It is a huge step up in competition.

BUT.......I think the rewards far outweigh the risks in this fight.
Look at it this way. If Conor loses, then yes it is a hiccup in the hype train and slows his momentum slightly. But there's no shame in losing to a guy like Poirier. If anything, it'll be a good lesson for him and he could only improve from there.

    But if he wins......?
If he beats a guy like Poirier? A guy who not so long ago was considered by many as the number one contender and in line for a shot against Aldo?
Imagine what that would do for his career. That's a MASSIVE scalp to take and the whole mma world would go crazy. This forum would probably go into meltdown. And it would catapult him into a number one contender fight in what would only be his third fight in the UFC. That's a major accomplishment for any fighter, never mind a fighter from this little country, who, up until a month or two ago was relatively unknown in the wider web of the mma world.

But if I'm honest, I'm not sure the UFC will want to put him in against Poirier just yet. They know what they potentially have in their hands and they won't want to risk that. On a Boston card, they'll want the Irishman to win, and win impressively. The Poirier fight might be too much of a risk for this card.

Poirier would be a great fight for Conor. Conor's boxing is the best in FW division and he would stand with Conor.
To stop somebody like Poirier would shoot Conor into the top 10 maybe 5 .
But looking at the Swanson fight I think Conor would knock out either one of them they're boxing isn't great , they're quite predictable and Conor would find openings easily. I could see swansons headkicks coming from a mile away the way he was setting them up and he was connecting DP with them Conor is unpredictable and it's very hard to see ways coming.
Poirier will be a another win or 2 away.

McGregor is ranked 19th on Fight Matrix

    http://www.fightmatrix.com/mma-ranks/featherweight/

I just think the Akira fight makes sense...but as has been said he's matched with somebody - just waiting on a contract signing, so who could it be and will it be at 145 or 155?
Poirier seems a bit much too soon and Akira is not deemed worthy of the fight by most. Who does that leave that isn't matched up already? Al Iaquinta? when he mends, at 155 in Boston?

or Hioki? ranked 14th comin off a loss fought in Jan?

Nunes? Ranked 15th - lost to Nick Lentz in Jan

Manny Gamburyan? 17th hasn't fought since Aug last year, may have been cut don't know

or MTB as has been mentioned before..

    some great match ups there

anyone else is matched up, injured or too high up the pecking order

Have a funny feeling it will actually be somebody major like Poirier or MTB or Nunes! The hype for any of those 3 matches would be mental stuff! and he has a great chance against all 3.

I hope its a 145 fight, just think he'd be better showing his skill again at 145 lb

In fairness Conor has'nt fought anyone even near their standard yet,you are getting a bit carried away.

And where in that post did I say he has?
He can only fight what's put in front of him
And he has been dismantling fighters the last couple of years. These are the guys who he will be fighting and I was giving my opinion on how they match up and who and how I'd think he'd win.
Stylistically both fighters are great opponents for Conor cos they stand and bang. And as I said before judging by all the fights I've watched on both if it stayed standing Conor would KO them as I think he's much better boxing than them both.

Ogle surprised and impressed me in his last fight, excellent ground game. I don't think the UFC will match them up just yet though. Both European fighters with some hype behind them. No sense derailing one just yet.

I actually like the Corassani fight. In some ways it would be too easy, and wouldn't push Conor that far up the ladder, but I think that if Conor wasn't the new Irish star a lot more people here would be saying that the fight makes sense. He's still young, only 1 fight into his UFC career and needs a bit more building up before he's launched into top 10 guys. Corassani is well known from TUF, coming off 2 wins (although I thought Ogle was robbed) and I think he would be a perfect opponent for Conor at this stage.
