In my local village eir followed the route of the existing copper lines when they rolled out fibre last year, a mix of existing ducts and poles

I got an OpenEir sales person to my door saying we were upgraded. I told him we weren't and I showed him the OpenEir website. He didn't think it was right.

I know Virgin have said they're installing fibre broadband in the area, but was surprised at OpenEir. Was it a mistake or could there be a delay on the website?

OpenEir are rolling out to rural areas, towns and cities, sometimes actually overlapping with NBI. It’s a mixture of poles and ducts, they just use the existing poles on older streets AFAIK and the ducts that have been placed already in newer houses and estates.

Virgin Media’s coax network is being replaced with their own FTTP also, which you can get Vodafone, Sky and soon Digiweb through as they have made it wholesale.

SIRO is usually towns and cities and as you said is utilising ESB infrastructure with the fibre coming up through where your meter is.

They all overlap in areas and you might have two or more available to you.

I am in the same situation and I think there is a delay updating the openeir and comreg websites, as I can see from the eir / vodafone and sky websites that I can apply for FTTH service

I got my Fibre connected yesterday by eir and I am still not showing up as having fibre on comreg or openeir, so there is definitely a delay in updating their websites

Has anyone got a openeir map link handy that doesn't require a arcgis login? All the links i find need a login and just wanna see what the status is in the area.

They removed access to it in the last few months afaik. The only way of checking is here for now afaik - https://www.openeir.ie/fibre/broadband-checker

Where did you hear that? Friends from Clontarf were wondering and I couldn't believe that being in the city couldn't get Fibre broadband >100 mb/s

work is meant to begin in 2026 but by the time that’s done and the line activated it will probably be then. Got on to someone high up in Openeir. Sure all I can get is 40 down 10 up!! Don’t want to go to Virgin Media.

Got Eir 1gb / openeir installed today. When I went to cancel virgin media they said I should have filled out forms with Eir to automatically disconnect Virgin media /upc connection. How can I get Eir to do this now if not too late or will I be paying both for next month?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 791 ✭✭✭NotShero

That wouldn’t be correct information from Virgin customer service, they might be confusing switching on the same access network. For example, if you had Virgin through NBI than eir would handle the switchover as it would be taking over the NBI connection. If you switch access network like you have, it is up to you to cancel.

Ring Virgin Media again and ask for the cancellations team or maybe submit a complaint here - https://www.virginmedia.ie/dynamicomplaintform/

They might enforce the 30 day notice period needed, which would mean you’ll need to pay for both connections this month.

That makes sense NotShero. Thanks for the explanation.

If you switch access network like you have, it is up to you to cancel.

That used to be the case, but since the EECC came into force there's a process for cancelling connections on other access networks (it's called IASS, or internet access service switching).

It's also true that if you weren't told about it when signing up with eir, you've missed the boat and will have to handle cancellation yourself.

While that should be the case, the guidelines are a bit vague and ComReg haven’t specifically set up a centralised system or strict rules like in the UK for this to actually work.

In my experience switching, providers do not usually help when switching access networks. I switched from Eir through Open Eir to Digiweb through SIRO, Digiweb did ask what current ISP I had and said I would have to cancel it myself. As long as they ask if you have a current ISP and tell you that you need to cancel the previous provider and they’ll wait to activate it until after your previous provider is cancelled, this seems to be covering them.

Thanks all. Eir gave me a discount for the inconvenience that helps with the double payments for the month.

Fibre being pulled between manholes in Clontarf, Dublin 3. Looks like a start.
