Here is the link to the a tweet where this is mentioned:

Same as you, I can't find it on The Times website though.

This will be a disaster. If an English broadcaster gets this then the I imagine the URC will be shafted on the schedules in favour of Premiership games.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,655 ✭✭✭roadmaster

I presume two of the broadcasters will be streamers that could allow all games be shown. The times is a british paper so when the talk about domestic maybe they mean only UK?

It would be a big risk for the IRFU to allow games go behind a pay wall.

The IRFU campaigned to allow six nations games go behind a pay wall so I wouldn’t be so certain they’d have any issues here

It appeared as a side bar to a story about 1973:

Go to page 238 of Saturday's edition (page 8 of The Scrum)

Thats very true but surley URC & 6n on FTA has being good way of advertsing the sport. At the end of the day Rugby is still in a way a niche sport. How many irish or lenister supporters know who there local AIL club is?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,206 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

    I agree wholeheartedly.

I was just pointing out that in the recent past, they have argued that should be allowed sell rights to pay TV

They may have changed their mind since (and indeed the TV rights world has changed)

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,548 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Reading the full article, it’s interesting to hear of the sellers remorse on the part of PRL clubs about the CVC deal. But that’s maybe one for the rugby forum rather than here.

One of the differences is of course that the URC has multiple “domestic” markets if you like and so a spread of the host broadcaster duties and even if one broadcaster took the U.K. / Ireland rights you’d still have SuperSport and an Italian broadcaster involved. The PRL rights involve mostly one host broadcaster (not sure if ITV picks up duties for the very small number of fixtures it covers) and of course it’s a single country league.

. A big difficulty with marketing the URC as a single entity for tv rights purposes is that fans in each country don’t tend to want to watch fixtures that don’t involve at least one of their own countries teams which is one of the reasons why it has eight domestic broadcast deals covering the U.K. and Ireland alone (RTE, TG4, Premier Sports, URC TV in Ireland and Viaplay, BBC NI, BBC Wales, and S4C in the U.K.). I think a mixture of pay and FTA really works for the league and I’d be weary of them going to a full pay solution particularly one which didn’t involve all games being televised.

Thanks for that, never spotted the epaper version before 👍️

The DAZN stuff (which it was quite rightly pointed out has nothing to do with Sports Extra) has been split off here:

A few of the sports channels are moving tomorrow on Sky in a “closing the gaps” move - two sports extra channels affected:

    Premier 2 - moves to #419

    BT 4 - moves to #421

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,003 ✭✭✭iseegirls

There are so few adverts on the channel, especially just in the live match today. Think about 3 ads, 1 from the usual Champions Travel at half time. Among them are about 7 promos for the channel. You'd wonder how they can continue with such little adverts.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,548 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

They are getting whatever Sky are paying them as part of the carriage deal too, adverts aren’t the be and end all for a subscription channel.

  • Registered Users Posts: 380 ✭✭fman

Made up for it today by cutting away from the live premier league match 2 or 3 times in the first 6 mins to run ads. Still as incompetent as ever.

I never want to see that bloody Quinnbet ad again!

Anyone know why the BT Sports channels are not showing in HD on Sky? I have full sports package and HD

You will need to ring them.

TNT Sports promos have started to air on BT tonight.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,206 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

There’s been a few crossover ads for BT sport programmes on Eurosport recently too

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,383 ✭✭✭dublinman1990

According to a post from one BT Sport employee on Linkedin; BT Sport will end broadcasting in it's current form in the UK & Ireland on the 17th of July.

It will switch over to TNT Sports after it.

    “New name, same game”.

They’re emphasising it’s just a rebrand for now, with the Eurosport integration still a bit down the road.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,548 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

It took them a while, but Premier Sports has a website again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,302 ✭✭✭Acosta

Everything about the ad campaign for TNT screams of more of the same, Snap Chat Sport type rubbish. Very disappointing.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,548 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Talk among the English tabloids that Laura Woods (not to be confused with her Irish namesake) is being headhunted to take over TNT’s Premier League coverage next season.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,548 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

And adding fuel to that flame, Jake Humphrey is leaving the channel, having been associated with their football output since day one of the BT era.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,548 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Premier Sports have studio coverage back for the URC at last with the final later - it’ll be a familiar feel with Conor Morris anchoring, David Wallace and Dan Leavy in the studio, Ryle Nugent and Andrew Trimble on the call.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,729 ✭✭✭lertsnim

Have it for all games next year. Coverage was really lacking this year.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,548 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

BT Sport’s last ever studio show from Stratford tonight with Sevilla v Roma in the Europa League tonight (presumably, with English clubs involved, they’ll be doing the Champions and Conference League on site).

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,302 ✭✭✭Acosta

Ah, thought as much when they had Primal Scream on at the end. Who of course they originally used when they first launched for their EPL coverage.

They deserve a lot of flack for their EPL coverage right the way through their existence. The presenters, pundits and commentators have mostly been awful. However, when you move away from the EPL and coverage involving English teams, a lot of it has been top notch.

The Champions League goals show with James Richardson and the panel of journalists was brilliant. I hope they keep that going with TNT. Their Serie A coverage is and has been excellent. When they had the Bundesliga, they showed as much of it as possible. Even showing a good chunk of 2.Bundesliga. Compare that to Sky, who have well and truly pissed allover that product since they secured the rights. Sometimes they will put a game on a Friday evening on TV, sometimes its on the app, sometimes it's on youtube and sometimes it's not on at all. A couple of weeks back they actually forgot to turn the broadcast of a Hertha match on until they were hit with a load of messages..BT's coverage of Ligue 1 has also been extensive.
