Thanks Eoin, big step up for me, not brand new though.

Blueys tres coolio pic of his new Damasko set against his computer screen time got me musing about one of my watches.. Now unlike his pic which is legible, mine is about the worst example of photography since daguerreotypes were invented. :o So apologies.

Anyway… I've been truly gobsmacked by the accuracy of the 1971 Longines Ultraquartz which has shamelessly graced these pages before. So I took a (pure shíte) photo this very evening.

    3310h15.jpg

No word of a lie guys and gals, she's running like that since the previous battery died and was replaced in april/may. Half a second slow in six months? Uneffinreal. That's more than the measure of modern high accuracy thermocompensated quartz territory. Never mind that the quartz in these runs at 9,000 odd Hz, rather than the 32,000 odd Hz of today's watches and the "integrated circuit" isn't, it's made up of individual transistors, resistors etc hand cobbled together from 1960's hearing aid components in a bid by Longines to make this new technology more affordable(though they weren't exactly cheap when new).

She's very sensitive to shock mind you. Even casual wearing can have it drifting, but put back in the box it'll come back to true in a few hours, so I suspect the Accutron like indexing system slave that drives the hands is the weak spot and the quartz master drags it back to true. If she ever kicks the bucket you'll be able to hear my haunted keens carried by the wind. We're talking a full on wake here. :( Ye're invited BTW :D

PS A shout out to a chap who goes by the handle of KeithT on the TZUK forum. Lovely bloke. He worked his magic on the watch a year ago nearly to the day. When he got it, it was running like a three legged horse, losing 45 minutes a day. Yep. He really put the work in spending hours and hours over days and yes weeks to fettle it. A thundering bastard they are to fettle too. If you have an electronic/tuning fork/early quartz in need of fettling, he's the man to ask along with the chap from Electric watches UK.

Stunning ! Well may you wear. A pic in the wrist would be nice too.

I'm a big fan of GO. My favorite being the the PanoMatic Lunar. Tried one on in Boston last year and loved it.

I bought this today, feels great on the wrist. I almost bought a cheaper fossil but decided to buy a proper watch instead. Black chrome bezel looks amazing I think. The strap is calf skin and quite comfy. I like this watch alot!

After a week we are 45 seconds slow. It's ok, approx 6-7 secs/day slow, but I expected a bit better, it lost about 20 seconds the first 24 hours, perhaps it was because the mainspring got fully wound down while in transit. I wore it every day, all day for the week, I take it off in bed. I tried leaving it crown down after the first 24 hours, going to see what it's like for another week. Wibbs there's no need to wave the magic mod wand, pic is the same as last week, with a different jumper:pac: Thanks for last weeks magic, and I'm delighted to have you cogging my technique.;)

Lovely watch Stereo and good call on getting a 'proper' brand. Seiko always seem to knock 'em out of the park.

Wearing my Zulu after a long time as the batteries died on it. The background story about changing batteries not a good one. I change them by myself if I can, as I tried to do it with this one too. Screwback case came out with a bit of effort as my case back opener is not wide enough for it, but I did it without scratching the caseback. One battery went out, the second one, buried much deeper and the screw too tiny for my amateur tools. I thought I better take the watch to some "professionals" to do the job for me.
Yesterday as I was in the Square, I dropped the watch to FastFix, telling the guy behind counter what the watch needs. I even told him that the seal was lubed already, bracelet opened up with the pin safely put aside so he can work easier on the watch, so all he needs to do is change the batteries and put the caseback in place.

Fast forward an hour later, get my watch and first thing look at the caseback. You'd never guess what I see (of course you do)? Caseback scratched deep from one of the grooves and marks on the opposite side. I told him about the scratch and he tells me that is normal for for the back to get scratches when battery changes are carried out and to ensure the WR the back needs to be screwed in tightly:eek:

He took the watch in the back again and when back, he's telling me that because the case is DLC treated, they can't do anything. I said I expected something like that to happen if I handed the watch to a friend to do the battery change, not from "professionals" that you pay them to do it. As I couldn't do much, I left with a bitter taste in my mouth and swore not to return there again.

Happy to get the watch on my wrist again, but the scar will be there to remind me of this story.

I wear this pretty face every now and then. It looks like the b@$tard child of a Tag Heuer Carrera and a Tudor Geneve. Its characterful for what it is.

I have a few reasonably nice time pieces but this is the interesting looking one that people stare at on my wrist the most. I think its a cracking looking watch and enjoy wearing it. Ive no shame rolling my sleeves up in the office with this one at all.
