Whats the story with handing in society score cards??
I said i wanted mine back to hand into my club and the looks i got, was told its not done in society outting??
I was told to just keep playing away and get cut in the winter, i know i wont get cut cos pick and place but im thinking more general play getting cut......advice please

First of all super shooting Dossy, well done! As far as I am aware there are a number of reasons that society cards are not accepted. The main one is that it is not an official club competition. This means that there is no CSS on which to base any handicap cut. Also, as you said yourself we are in the middle of the winter rules so even if it was a competition you wouldn't be cut anyway.

    Sorry for off topic Mods

Had a quick look into this:
Apparently up until circa 2007, you would get an automatic cut for a good round in a Society. Players had to return "good" cards. You couldn't get any increases based on a bad round so there was no need to return.

In 2008 they did away with that, Society scores went from being reviewed instantly to being reviewed as part of the year end review conducted by the Handicap Sec.
So, since then I suppose the "importance" of handing in a society card has been diminished somewhat.

Personally I don't think Society outings should factor into your handicap much, it's a different ball game altogether and the fact that you don't have a CSS and have to rely on the SSS isn't ideal.

Dossy, the HC Sec can cut you without you handing in a card at all, a lot is up to their discretion, if you're really chasing a cut you could have a word with him and say that you are scoring well and think you should be cut. Not many would do this, I can't see the Sec having much problem with someone wanting a lower HC.

I am wondering if my own HC Sec will be having a look at my handicap soon, my last 8 rounds average out at 34 points, I may be getting a shot or two reduction in the review... I'm incredibly keen to get cut but I'd also like it to be because I put in a good performance in a counting comp (not interested in prizes, I just think it'd feel like I earned it the proper way)
If I got a review cut, it'd be a bit bitter sweet I'd have to say.

Thanks, to be honest off 22.8 i should be doing good shooting, seem to be getting more consistent when is a good thing :)

Ya i get what your saying but its general play im looking to get cut in,

Now im only playing properly 6 months so am i expecting too much to early?

Yes! You are playing better than your handicap so it will drop. But beware, summer rules are a different animal. There is no placing which means balls sitting down in the rough, playing out of divots on the fairway, not having sometimes critical inches to assist getting around a tree. Not to mention the longer course and the self induced pressure of knowing that comps are qualifying scores :)

Ya i know what the crack is, looking forward to the summer,
I just hope i still keep the scoring going :)
I reckon even with the longer courses in the summer ill just be back 50-60yrds

Played Carton House (O'Meara) today... casual round.
Course was in fantastic condition for time of year.
Wind made it difficult to pick the right club.

    Started Double bogey
    Bogey
    Par
    Bogey
    Bogey
    Bogey
So I'm +6 after six and not too happy  ,rallied round to finish front 9 with three straight pars.

Back 9 and things started to happen for me

    Birdie
    Par
    Bogey
    Par
    Birdie
    Bogey
    Birdie
    Par
    Par

    Played back 9, -1 absolutely delighted. :D

    Gross 78 (+5)
    43 f9
    35 b9

    FIR 43%
    GIR 61%
    Putts 33

you can hand in a card from a society outing but there is no guarantee of it having any impact.

I'd say bring the card into the clubhouse & hand it in. Worst case scenario they ignore it so really nothing to lose

Only got 9 in. Shopping "orders".

Still happy enough - bad off tee.

But everything else the same again

    +3

    15 putts
    1 birdie
    4 bogies
    5 pars

only 2 fairways out of 7

3 up and downs out of 7

Much tougher conditions today - strong cross wind , requiring shape and the odd punch on a few holes. Went out and shopped for myself after too (new 3 wood - had very few options in 210 to 240 range, so maybe a new option off tee for some holes).

Played 2 holes today, looked at the lads & said, nah, think we'll call it a day as unlikely to play the full 18.

Hit the driving range instead...even there you were battling with the elements!!

After the week of weather we've just had its really frustrating to wake up to that

Just about calmed down after this mornings round.

Same comp as Space above,to say It was blowing a gale is an understatement.
It was just myself and an elderly member in the group.
We played the full 18 holes, we were 2 of 9 idiots stupid enough to do so.

31 points won it. I had 18 points after 9, that included 2 scratches. Some great golf had me level par after 5. We then turned into a gale.
Driver, 3hyrid, 3hyrid and I was still 30 yards short of the Par 4. Chipped it to two feet, wind blew it back towards me and off the green.
    Similar story on the 7th.

Then a nice 9 iron on the Par 3 8th with the gale behind us.
9iron, 186 yards carry, ball plugged on green, 6 foot putt for birdie, tapped it, wind took it 20 foot past the hole. Finished with a Bogey, DB for 18 at the turn.

Knew I'd be in with a shout if I continued but I said we should call it a day.

NO WAY.... He was in the 2's and wanted his chance on the 11th & 17th.

5 mins later and he wasn't budging.

I should have just asked the ranger to go out on the back 9 but didn't think of it. It would have been cruel on the bloody ranger.

He hit his driver on the Par 3.... Twice. Into the water 70 yards ahead. This guy wanted his chance of the 2's money.

    I went level 2's till the 13th.
It was just short of a storm at this stage, he had scratch 10,11,12,13.
I asked him again as I thought he would have cracked.

    Not a chance!!!

I told him I was done but I'd mark his card. Not a word was spoke over the last hour.

Got to the clubhouse and I signed his card for, he had 19 points.
Great score, well worth it, he didn't score on any of the Par 3's never mind get his 2's money.

I could have won whatever was on offer but I couldn't of cared less at the time.
The wind actually blew him down 5 times during the round, bags and stands falling for every shot.
Madness. I'll be avoiding that name on the timesheet.

His wife must be a terror.

Ah I think you should have played on.

Fair enough i can see where you are coming from in that they were pretty horrific conditions out there today, but i have a round booked tomorrow and im living for it after a week of sitting in minding sick kids, and i don't think i would be too happy should any of my playing partners not fancy it because the conditions aren't favourable.

Maybe his wife is a terror and Saturday is his only days peace for the whole week.

I stayed with him for the 18 holes, I wouldn't leave someone out there alone no matter how much I wanted to use my 7 iron for a non golf related act :)

I'm don't mind a bit of bad weather, the other 7 that finished the comp were early starts and escaped the worst.
The lads in the Pro shop were waiting for us to close up. We were the only 2 on the course for over an hour.

I'd have been delighted with 9 holes, tough conditions and we were well battered and drenched at that stage. The extra 9 was just pure stupidity. I should have called the ranger out if I'd have thought of it.

It wasn't as if he was enjoying it, he was playing brutal and complaining about it, but yet that pot of gold that is the 2's money was keeping him going.

Should a comp like this have been called off in those conditions i.e. ball being blown off the green. Buddy of mine who plays off 2or3 will avoid those conditions as he reckons it throws off his rhythm the next time he plays. I'd imagine he's right but in any case its a good excuse not to go out.

Ya, It should have been called off. It was farcical, it was like crazy golf on the greens, had to run up and mark it before it took off, had to re-tee the ball numerous times on some holes. Thinking back, there were also branches falling of trees which could of done serious harm..... Now the chances of them hitting anyone was extremely low considering there was only 2 idiots out there from 12-1:30.

Drove by the back nine in Grange Castle yesterday at about 1.30. Wind was mental and rain coming in sideways and its so open on he back nine there. I said to the wife nobody would be be stupid enough to be out playing in that. Looks like I was wrong:D:D:D

Weird day today. 38 points +12 off 14 but desperately disappointed.

    2 birdies
    7 pars
    6 bogies
    1 double
    2 scratches

Was only +3 after 12, feeling great. Two birdie 2s on 9th and 11th and in the 2s club!

In fact I came as close to a hole in one in ages, hit a sweet 4 iron to 18 inches and it was on the far side too. It must have missed the hole by inches.

Had a bad 3 putt for bogey on 13, then another 3 putt on 14 for another bogey. An iffy drive on 15 and bad second left me struggling to get another bogey. So I was standing +6 on the 16th tee, ended up making a total hash of my second, hit a great third but quit on short wedge, overhit the next then 3 putt to scratch the hole. Got a great par on 17 after a bad drive. So had 38 points going up the last but another bad drive was followed up another sloppy shot, then caught a tree with my third after creaming it, ended up with another scratch.

Seems silly but I think I forgot how well I was playing near the end. Lost my concentration badly. The annoying thing is that I was only 4 points behind the winner. Could easily have picked up those 4 points....

but should finish on positives as the round had far more highs than lows. Ball striking again was top drawer. My greens in regulation stats must be improving no end. Really looking forward to esker hills next week with the boardsies....

33 points today off 17 in the club comp.

Had 5 points after 5 holes... Had 15 points at that stage last week.
    Funny old game.
Turned with 13 for a fairly p*ss poor front 9. Very happy with the 20 on the back 9 though.

95 Gross after not being able to get out for what felt like ages.

Driver suffered since I was last out. Back to a slice on a bad shot, took until the end of the back nine until I could hit straight so must drill the draw more.

Irons, wedges, woods and putter we're surprisingly well behaved today :)

39 points, 81 strokes on my last round of the year, so a happy enough finish to 2013. Finished 2nd in the comp too & had a 2 so a nice little bonus.

    43% FIR
    44% GIR
    32 putts

Hadn't played for a couple of weeks so was nice to have a decent round. Short game was a little rusty, which is to be expected. Tighten it up a bit & should be in pretty solid shape.

People usually don't boast about their nett score, particularly when talking in terms of stroke, it has little or no relavance without handicaps coupled with it been a scramble makes it even less relevant imo, but meh horses for courses, also hate to be the one to tell you but your 6 under nett is very unlikely to feature in the prizes, but well played anyway.
