Went out today for club singles,
Played ok, left alot of putts after me but still managed to come away with 39pts off 23....

    Advice now please lads....

My club has put in mats for the winter and most but not all of the mats are nearly 40-50yds ahead of normal markers.

Question: Should i take my recent scoring as a possitive or should i take it as expected since tees moved up?

Good shooting but must be one of the only clubs still have counting comps this time of the year?

Fairly sure this weekend just gone was our last ( Roganstown).

I played a 13 hole comp / Winter League in Moate this morning and had 24pts off 15.

We played on and finished the 18 anyway and a birdie on the Par 5 18th got me up to 36pts which I was quite pleased with considering my putting had been pretty atrocious at times.

Starting to feel the love. 19 on the front.

    Par on 10th and 11th.

Inside 50m after two on par 5 12th. Then wedge it over the back and end up with bogey.

On in two on index 1 par 4 13th. Lip out three putt for bogey.

    Par 14th and 15th.

Lip out bogey on index 3 16th.

    Par 17th and 18th.

25 points for the back off 20.

Tees were up and placing everywhere but still over the moon.

Working my socks off and it looks to be paying off. Please cut me soon.

Nice steady 19 pts for our nine hole comp on Saturday. Highlight of the day being a "Greebo golf" par on our 360 yard index 2: 7i + 7i left me 10 yards off the green nice chip to 5 feet, pop the putt in for a nice 4 pointer.

    2 Par
    5 bogeys
    2 Doubles

    15 Putts

Level Par Gross on Saturday (3 ball scramble)

First time playing a team event like that and I wasn't expecting much but I really enjoyed it.
We finished -4 nett but I'm guessing that was nowhere near the top of the leader board, neither of us holed a putt all day outside of 6 foot. It was good to have company in that department :D

Didn't do my teammates much favours when I was first up with approach shots, duffed it a few too many times to put the pressure on them. Rescued them a few times when I was last up though.
I don't know how to take it but I was told to tee off 3rd... get up there and rip it...once we have put a shot in play :P
Drove and chipped it really well. Irons so so. Putting a bit meh but not a disaster.

Think it's the first round that I've properly enjoyed since the winter rules came in, back to enjoying golf for what it is and not making it all about the HC.

Shot -2 gross in the same scramble as PARlance, with a handicap of 4.5 to give us a score of 6.5 under (65.5 net off handicaps of 12, 13, 20)

    Top 3 net scores were:

    62 (handicaps 5, 12, 18)
    63.5 (handicaps 3, 6, 16)
    64.4 (handicaps 7, 12, 15)

We probably had 2 holes where we definitely should have scored a stroke better (which would have had us in the money it seems :( )

Lipped out for a birdie from about 6ft on 7th & missed our 3 par putts on 10th from about 4ft (another costly lip out)

Overall we played pretty solid golf, and played strategically pretty well. Our 20 handicap was starting to get a little panicked as he still needed to hit 2 drives with 5 left to play. When he found the fairway on 14 we decide to stick with his drive. It meant we had a longer approach in (approx 195 yds) but we hit the green & got a 2 putt par. He then found the green on the par 3 17th, which lifted a weight & made the par 5 18th more reachable, and we came away with a birdie to finish.

Was an enjoyable day out with 2 sound lads.

And PARlance, if they were letting you hit last, take it as a compliment, meant that they were happy to get a positional ball out there & then let you swing freely to get a bit more yardage out of your drives.

We had each taken our 4 tee shots before going onto the 13th...
We (the other two lads really) were trying to avoid a situation like yours but it was way too conservative.
I got mine away on the 1st and then hit it 50 yards past both on the 2nd (par 5) , two of us would have given it a good stab at being on the green... That hole really suits my fade and I told them I won't hit it like that again for the rest of the day... I lived up to that.
We ended up taking our 3rd shot about 60 yards ahead of my second.
    I put mine OOB's in protest :D:o

We tried to avoid it ourselves. For the likes of the par 5s, we had a look after the drives & if it was possible to get there in 2 we took the longer drive, otherwise we tried to get an even spread. Its easier said than done sometimes though!!!

Bit late posting but had a good round on Sunday. Conditions were perfect in fairness.

    Anyway scored 39 points, off 14. 83 strokes (+11).

    2 birdies
    7 pars
    6 bogies
    2 doubles
    1 triple

Looked dodgy when I had a triple on the 2nd after a shocking drive ended up in a ditch and had to take a penalty drop and no chance of making the green with my third. But I immediately went par, birdie, par, birdie in the next 4 holes and all of a sudden I was flying! Finished the front 9 with 22 points. Got to the 15th tee at just +5 for the round, hit a beautiful drive down the middle of the fairway but then pulled my second left of the green. Followed up with a weak pitch, then was too agressive with my par putt and ended up 5 foot past and missed the return putt for an awful double. Ended up with another double on 17 after my second bad drive of the day, very similar to the 15th, long par putt, too far past the hole...

So all in all very happy, ball striking in the last two weeks has been very good all over the course. Admittedly the winter rules are really helping (we have placing in the rough) but still nice.

The important part of the day was scoring over 38 points. We have a competition in our club where if you score 38 points or more over the winter, you are entered into a competition in March. The winner gets free membership for 2014! What I can't understand is that only 40 odd members signed up for the comp, I like those odds!

    81 strokes again.

Started well (38 on front) - but failed to get up and down at all on the back nine and was 7 over.

So just ok - Driver a bit better but still going right when I go OTT.

Putting not too bad 31 putts - with 3 putt on last.
    33 % GIR - lowest in a while.

Wind picked up on back nine - but it was a great day for a game of golf considering it is December.

Overall , happy enough - considering I'm changing swing a bit. I'm not sure if my swing is old swing or what I think is new swing when on course.

Missing lots of 6 to 8 feet putts, and to the left. I'm ending up in this range from off the green - too far away. So more work needed here.

Fair play for noticing this yourself and not blaming the putting, because in 2013 the pro's on the PGA Tour made on average 67% of all putts in the range 4 - 8 feet! That means for every 3 putts they are having in that range, they are missing 1.

The key is to get closer to the pin! Golf is easy eh:P

    Good shooting Fix!

87 gross in Moor Park yesterday. First really good round I put in since changing my grip and playing a draw with the driver and have it working mostly. 3 pars and a birdie on a par 5 and one ball in the water.

The draw on the driver still feels a bit unnatural but my bad shots are now straight slightly right and my good is a gentle draw.Getting a very nice bit of extra yardage aswell so I'm going to keep drilling it and see if I can have less off shots.

Strangest 9 holes ever today.. Played in Stackstown (new club)
    Pitching/chipping was awful.

3 pars/3 pars and 3 double bogies.. 1st recorded round of the year/first game since April.

This is the first score towards a new handicap.

Duffed 4 pitches and blades another couple. Lipped out for eagle on 18 after a 3wd to 10ft

35 points off 17 in todays club comp.
That wasn't looking all that likely as I stood on the 7th tee with 6 points...
3 Pars saved it and I turned on 15 points.

Kept it up on the back 9, coming home with 20.
Need to work on getting out of the blocks for next year.

37 points today in a society outing.

Started with a double and thought oh no, but parred the next 5 in a row to end with 22 points. Couldn't buy a putt on the back 9 for a total of 15.

Edit: it was good enought to win my category :)

Played my first round (well 15 holes) in Athlone this morning with a work society. Given a handicap of 24 for the day and finished on 21 points, scoring on 10 of the 15 holes. The other 5 all had me making a mess from the tee. I did manage to get two pars, on a par 5 and par 3.

This is the post I have waited many years to write... I finally broke 80!!!

Shot a 78 off 14 for 44 points in our Turkey shootout. It was the almost perfect round you dream of, almost mistake free from start to finish.

Actually started the round at a mundane pace par, bogey, bogey, bogey. Then had a shocker on the 5th, a 160m par three. Put my tee shot to about 25 feet. Misjudged the putt and left it four feet short, then missed that one. Not only that missed the next one too for a 4-putt double bogey...then on the par 5 6th hit a magnificent drive and equally good second to leave a short sand wedge to the green. Hit it crisp and straight and thought that it was going to be close but it was actually short and caught the very edge of the bunker in front of the flag and stayed in. Didn't manage to get up and down and walked off with a frustrating bogey. So I was at +6 after 6 holes, little did I know at that point I'd play the rest of the round in level par!

From this point forward I had the best run of my life. Birdie on the 7th, the first of four holes where I had no shot. Then just missed a very makeable par putt on 8. Had another birdie on the par 3 9th, beautiful iron to 6 feet and sank the putt. Had yet another magnificent drive on the par 5 10th hole. I only had a 6-iron, which I creamed and left about 25 to 30 feet from the pin. Just missed the eagle putt and tapped in for my third birdie in four holes! Parred 11, then another superb drive on 12 left me a sand wedge to the green, caught it lovely and left in approx 8 feet from the flag, just missed the birdie and yet another tap in par. On 13 hit another screamer of a drive which left another short wedge into the green, shot to 20 feet or so. It was a tricky putt so played sensible and layed up to the hole for another tap in par.

On the 14th hit my first bad drive of the day, got under it and left myself out of range for the green, then played a very bad second, lifted my head, and then scuttled along the ground. For me this was the defining moment of the round. I settled myself, got my thoughts right before even approaching the ball. Hit a decent 8-iron but just missed the green. Then hit a good chip and sank the putt for a bogey. I had narrowly avoided a disastrous double. Then hit an ok drive on 15 but pulled the second just left of the green, not a great chip, never followed through but then sank my longest putt of the day for a par. On the par 5 16th hit a decent drive, good second and then hit a sweet 7-iron approach that just caught the hill onto the green and stayed there. Had a decent attempt at the birdie but again had a tap in par. On the 17th had a reasonable drive, great second shot to 15 feet to leave a makeable birdie putt.

At this stage I knew I was very close to a very special score. So I just put it up beside the hole, I was only interested in getting down in 2. Another tap in par. The 18th is the toughest hole on our course so the plan was to get out with bogey. Hit a dodgy drive. Left myself with a tree to negotiate for my lay up (it's almost always impossible for me to make the green in two). But once again I hit a great rescue wood to leave about 50 yards to the hole. Then hit a lovely sand wedge to 12 feet for par. The putt was across the hill. Once again I decided to chicken out as an overhit putt could leave me further away than I started....so I just trickled it up to the hole, it was heading in but just stopped short. It was a little bit of a pity. It would have been a level par back nine but common sense prevailed.

I often wondered if this was possible for me, I knew I had the ability to put a decent run of holes together but I always manage to screw up a few holes. Yesterday I kept the screw ups to one ridiculous 4 putt. Keeping my composure was critical to it, but also belief, particularly on the greens. That said my ball striking is at an all time high. I hit an outrageous number of high quality shots yesterday.

I dedicate this sub-80 to FDP, whose achievement inspired me to keep believing I could do this!!

PS. In case you are wondering, I didn't win the competition, but I finished second. A 9 handicapper shot a -1 (71) for 46 points. The only consolation for me was that my four putt on 5 made no difference- he played the back nine in -3 for 25 points, which would have beat my paltry 24 points :D

    Congrats barnaboy, great golfing!

Can't say I was even close to that myself this week, 90 strokes, 30 points off 12.

The one positive I can say is that the swing changes are definitely starting to work off the tee.

    FIR 71%
    GIR 18%
    37 Putts

Short game was very poor today, wasn't committing to chips & pitches, which I'd been focussing on recently, and my putting let me down. For example on the par 5 18th hit a solid drive, followed by a 3 wood to about 20 feet, walked off with a par after a 3 putt.

Positive is that I played the par 5s well.

Was poor on the par 3s on the front 9.

All in all not the best day, but the weather was fine, the company was good, and even if the score didn't show it, it feels like progress
