Late '83 reg, so either an import or an elephant in the room

Gorgeous either way - I'm not a particular Ford fan, but I have a soft spot for a few models, including Mk2 Escort rally cars, especially with BDA engines (sublime sound)

    Early 80s #SI registration.
Either an import here then or a car built from a new shell.
    Not a dodgy reg!

They seemed to introduce the 3 letters ASI / AZG etc., and when they ran out brought in SI / ZG to cover until the year letter 87 D etc came in.

    Lol @ the Wiki explanation...
"Elephant in the room" is an English Metaphorical idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored or going unaddressed. The idiomatic expression also applies to an obvious problem or risk no one wants to discuss.
It is based on the idea that an Elephant in a room would be impossible to overlook; thus, people in the room who pretend the elephant is not there have chosen to avoid dealing with the looming big issue.

is there any of us who dwell (reside ,not think)on this thread, who when starting the restoration of their uncles A40.Cortina, Dolomite. Hunter etc, faced with many ,many hours of welding to turn that semi rotten shell into a usable one, might not think.....

in the next parish there is a bloody good shell needing minimal repair.... why dont i use that one instead of repaing my own... I will transfer all the bits and hey presto Uncle Jims car lives....

yes I know that one should use the reg number of the "new" shell.... then its not Jims.....I can cut virtually al the bits off the "new " one. (in Ireland I think 98 or 99%, weld them into Jims one ( i.e weld Jims chassis numbers into the "new" one ) Seriously though ,I believe this is possible/legal. In The UK there is a proceedure /system to adjudiciate on these matters.

Assuming ,as I do, that most would do this,i.e swap the body. then a change of identity might not be a Mortal sin.

Further along the line we come to the ,go to the Uk, buy a car like Uncle Jims , switch plates, and Hey Presto.......

I torture myself on this subject, its a grey area... the case of A Triumph Herald has been told often enough ,and of course Triggers Shovel.

swapping a plate to increase the value or interest factor of a car is of course Wrong

............there were actually quite a few MK2 Escort shells in this Country kept as spares. There was a long rigmarole you had to go through to get it organised but there are a few out there, so this one could be legitimate in that it's chassis was only completed in '83/86 and registered as new then.

It's not a grey area, it's illegal. It's illegal because where do you draw the line? There's enough ringing going on without the honest part of the community doing it too

Sadly, It's becoming more and more accepted as the years go by.
Many dont even bother to hide it anymore.
One guy told me once that all his windows got broken, that's why they all had etchings with UK numbers in them.

But, and I stress this point emphatically.
The series of rubbish import registrations we have to chose from now is not helping the situation one bit.

We need a shake up on this bigtime.
The IVVCCC harp on about how they lobbied for the original ZVs, how about some cohesion from clubs to improve our lot nowadays.
Now all our cars are listed off the road there should be a national database of how many vehicles are in existence now also.

Out of curiosity can you find the act that states it is?

If you think it is OK, then tell your insurance company that the car you have has a false identity and is a clone of another scrapped car and this one is a later UK import of a simillar car - sort of, and that it is all OK because you told the revenue about it as well and they said it was fine. And no, they would not give you that in writing.

Mmmmm .... see what we mean? If it is all nudge, nudge, wink, wink, whatever you say, say nothing - then it is not right. Just like washed diesel, or smuggled sheep.

Happening in the US too with this 'Merkur XR4Ti' which looks SO MUCH like a Sierra Cosworth  - they have a 25year rule over there :(

Indeed, the Merker had the xr4i body with the extra window, but maybe they cut the c pillar out?

The discussion is ongoing over there - it IS a ringer because I'll bet unless nearly every panel /glass* was changed that it's a pure Cossie - surprised the great 'Feds' havn't sussed it yet - no interest ? ( Like our Revenue ? )

*Front wings have Euro repeater lights
Rear wing has flip-filler v's Euro screw cap filler
Rear panel for NA had raised no.plate lights, and 'License plate holder'
All the glass would have EU mark v's DOT for NA
    .......

Who the hell do you think you are? I asked about the legislation and you decide to accuse me of placing false identity's on cars?
