Pointless is the best entertainment show out there

I have been a pointless fan since we got BBC in our college apartment last year and I simply love the show. It has so many strings to it's bow. It has the quiz element and it also has the banter between Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman. This is one of the best examples of synergy I have come across in a while.

It can spark many debates along with making somebody look like a genius or a complete fool. 5 15 is certainly a time I look forward to :D

I'm surely not the only person who watches it over here?

Because of work I generally record and watch it later, is one of the better tv quizzes, up there with Eggheads.

    Pointless is a terrific programme.

I love the running in jokes, like Richard saying how great Ben Miller's Solo work is, and all the Central African Republic answers.

I think the BBC might be in danger of squeezing it too much, it has been on without a break for ages. It could do with a break every now and then, just to keep it fresh.

Not sure about been the best entertainment show but definitely the best quiz right now.

Definitely one of the best quizzes on tv. That and the chase :D

Edit: I meant Breakaway. Not the chase, hate that show :L

Cant stand the presenter. Annoys me in everything I see him in, especially those horribly unfunny direct line adverts.

It was off for a month when the Olympics were on. I imagine that there will be a break at Christmas time too.

I didn't see it over the Summer but I'm pretty sure a lot of those were repeats from a few years back. Central African Republic certainly is a Pointless country, although St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Sao Tome and Principe push it close :D

I'm pretty sure they're filming at least another 180 episodes anyway but I'd imagine there will be a break around Christmas. My biggest fear is that Xander and Richard get too popular and move onto "better" shows.

just love pointless, have it set to record every evening just in case i miss it.

Richard Osman was on the winning team on the Only Connect "Children in Need" special last week.

His pointless knowledge of "50 Ways to Leave your Lover" was particularly useful in the last round.

Its ok but there's a hell of a lot of waffle in the show, the amount of time actually taken up by questions and answers isn't much at all. If it had a bit more content and a bit less padding it would be much better.

This is true, there is a good bit of time between questions where Alexander repeats himself but I guess for a first time viewer it would be nice to know what's happening.

I remember seeing an older format with 5 pairs and an extra round on challenge but that felt a little too cluttered. I thoroughly enjoy the "banter" between Richard and Xander though, it makes the show for me.

That jackpot is certainly rolling along now, hopefully it'll break £20,000.

As Mr. Prodston said above, it was like that in Series 1, but then...
Series 2 - The first major change is a reduction from 5 pairs of contestants to 4, apparently because the 'banter' between hosts, and between hosts and contestants, proved so popular in series 1 (no, I'm not too sure how they figured that one out, either).

I like the banter between Alexander and Richard and the contestants, it makes the show.

Nerdy fact: Richard's brother is Matt Osman, the bass player of Suede.

Well done to you at home, if you got that one!

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Love the show. Record it daily as I'd not be home from work on time. The actual time spent on questions is only a small percentage of the show, sure, but the rest of it - the banter and the like - is fun unlike other shows like Eggheads, or Who Wants to be a Millionaire where the non-question bits are boring. There's nearly always at least one round per episode that suits me so I get to feel clever getting a low or pointless answer too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,305 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Prodston

Quality show today, the first round is Pointless at it's best. Sure it's not a Mastermind or Eggheads question but what entertainment. Richard and Alexander trying not to burst out laughing was great.

Also got myself a Pointless answer with
    Congo
    and would have won myself
    £20,000

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,351 ✭✭✭NegativeCreep

    Got myself a pointless with
    kazakhstan
    and
    seychelles
today. It should have been me! :D

Fun show, though I tune in at 5:20 to avoid the intros.

    One small complaint:

'Well unfortunately you don't win today's jackpot which rolls over to the next show but you have been amazing/fantastic contestants and you do of course get to take home our pointless trophy.'

Alexander says this ALL THE TIME. They can't all be amazing or fantastic unless he's very easily amused.

I agree, although I don't really mind him saying it to the contestants who at least get to the final.

It's when he says it to the couple who have gone out twice in Round One after giving Gibberish answers, that annoys me slightly.

There was once a pointless round on the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett and I had to stop myself from squeeing, because I got most of them.

Yes I agree if you manage to go out of the game twice in the first round, you should be escorted out of the building by security, while the audience laughs at you.

Or I know, it could be the "Pointless" round, as in, anybody who has a pointless object gets to throw it at the offending contestants.
I think it might add another dimension to the show.

    Sometimes I weep for humanity
In a round where they had to identify planets Only 89 people out of 100 could identify a picture of Planet Earth. 11 people got it wrong. Are they aliens just visiting or are they (more likely) taking the piss

I know right, I face-palmed when I saw that, although I reckon there must have been a few trolling (I hope). These 100 could be anyone and certainly don't have Alexander's education :pac:

Richard out did himself today too

I've been praising Pointless on here for quite a while now. You can tell they have to put an effort into the questions now cause they've gone through so many shows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,790 ✭✭✭brian_t

Alexander I think always asks the winning pair about how they will spend the money after their first guess has been checked.

Today however he asked before any of their guesses were checked.

Did he know their first guess would be pointless ??

Well to be honest with the order they gave even I thought it would have been their best chance of that all important pointless answer. I'd like to think I'm the master of bull at times but Alexander truly is the king.

Fine show but have to agree with the posters who said there is too much waffle. I always record it and scroll through the padding

I wish they would publish somewhere all answers and their score. I understand that they can't go through all of them on the televised version, but when playing at home it'd be great if you could check a website or something to see what the answer you would have given would have scored.

Yes, that is probably the single biggest improvement they could make. Although I guess they don't so people can't just swat up on all the pointless answers so easily.

I mean if you watch the show regularly you'll know that if an African country beginning with C is what's required you'll go for Central African Republic. So I can forgive them that, despite being annoyed at not knowing what I scored at times.

Anybody watch the Celebrity version on a Saturday night? The episode with the 'comedians' was fantastic...Hale And Pace, Cannon and Ball, Keith Harris and Orville, Bobby Davro and Kenny Lynch. Not one of them could think of an answer, let alone a pointless answer!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,873 ✭✭✭Skid

My favourite final round was when they had to name an Irish Taoiseach or President.

Nearly any correct answer would have been pointless. Our final pair went for those well known Irish Leaders Paddy Ashdown, Tony Benn and Neil Kinnock :D
You didn't win the jackpot which rolls over to tomorrow, but you do go away with the Pointless Trophy. And you have been fantastice contestants ...

I enjoy "Breakaway" away too, even though it doesn't have a patch on Pointless. As somebody who studied Economics, I find it interesting to see what tactics people employ. So many people are not economically rational!

The presenter looks like a cuddly Warren Gatland too, all in all it's a good warm up for the main event!

I don't mean to brag but I got all the pointless answers for

    I also got
    Big Nothing
    :D

Eggheads was the quiz show of choice in my college flat, we were obsessed with it. Pointless is excellent also, I tape every episode I can.

Reminds me of another round once where they had to name famous "Charles's" by the clue given. One clue was Irish Prime Minister for three terms (Haughey of course). One lady said she didn't know the answer so she'd just guess by saying Charles + an irish surname and chooses: "Charles Abraham"?? Alexander was fairly bemused :p

If I remember rightly it was
Countries with only one particular vowel in their name. The winning answer was Panama as far as I remember. Also Congo, Seychelles and Kazakhstan were pointless. There may have one or two others as well

Just call me the guy with the BBC iplayer :p:D:D
The two old guys (Simon and Martin) selected the category 'Place Names'.
The question was 'Single-Vowel Countries' - name countries with a single vowel in their name. After the minute was up, they chose (in order of least pointless) - Yemen, Fiji and Panama. Yemen took them down to 1, Fiji down to 2, Panama down to ££££££££££££ :)

Anyone remember a very early episode where the final question was on Irish counties? You just had to name three of the 32 counties. The average Irish person would have been overjoyed with that one although it was tricky trying to work out which ones were going to be the most obscure. I recall some counties were spelt funny. I think Laois was spelt as Laoghis or something along those lines.

From watching the show I get the impression the British know little to nothing about us. I remember one head to head question - can't recall what it was about - but the picture was of Mary McAleese and not only did none of the contestants know who she was, but it was a pointless answer. I would have thought with the visit of Elizabeth that she would have registered with at least one British person.

British homes aren't saturated with Irish Television, "personalities" or News programmes so sadly its no surprise really they didn't know McAleese. Irish homes have access to more British Channels than they do Irish ones so would probably be more aware of famous British people? Just a theory.

Also depends on the 100 people they are asking too. Watched one the other day and only 60 odd knew that Obama's presidential address was the White House ffs.

Some genius from Strictly Come Dancing reckons GIN JIBE is an anagram of Belgium. (The answer was Beijing, in a round about Olympic Summer Games Venues)

She knew there was no L in GIN JIBE but went for it anyway. It is just as well she is hot.
