with all the lightning and intense rain forecast for some is there any chance of a cat 0/1 tornado to form in these intense bursts or is the setup wrong?.it certainly looks impressive on the radar

Plenty of lightning approaching the west coast over the last few hours. More off the southwest.

Weather is destroying the the Saorview signal here (north kildare), bring back analogue!

Sounds like a wobbly antenna or loose connection blowing in the wind! Might be worth getting that fixed! Analogue would get snowy, digital will glitch.

Wind & rain has no effect on terrestrial UHF signals and that's all Saorview is. Digital just tends to be all or nothing. So as the signal degrades you can't watch where as analogue would just look rubbish but it would keep working.

Heavy downpours can interfere with satellite signals tho.

What a nice surprise thinking that this was only gonna last earlier on in the west!

The band should move east over night , pretty much all areas at risk of seeing some sparks ! :D Ohhh to be out in Galway right now to chase with it east! :D

Guess who's not going to sleep until this passes over. Have to leave Galway city in about 20 mins. Pity it didn't come ashore earlier.

Absolutely beautiful night here in Dromahair... starry skies, all is calm... MUHAAAHHAAA.... bring on the storm.... Went out earlier and secured the garden furniture... didn't bother the last windy forecast and one of my garden chairs blew over... it brought Pangea's photo to mind... This event seems a bit more exciting... Driving to Dublin early in the morning... thats going to be fun me thinks... ;)

I have an inkling the band approaching the west now will move Northeastwards, while a new band will form just ahead of it to the south over Kerry and spread northeastwards just ahead of it with thunderstorms imbedded. - (Just a guess)

Alot of wind and rain in Cork City (South) at the moment but not lightning.

Will it bypass Cork City do ye think?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,831 ✭✭✭dloob

Went for a quick walk in Renmore in Galway overlooking Galway Bay.
Nice Night at the moment mild and breezy with the moon appearing now and again and the sea roaring.
I did see the clouds on the western horizon light up once so there is something out there.

Hopefully my internal alarm clock will wake me around 4am - that's what time I'm setting it for anyways.

MOD/HEAVY SLEET reported at Belmullet on the 2300hr reports along with a Gust of 34kts. I suspect poor visibility rather than Mod/Heavy Sleet is the problem or mabey intense rain.

From the Netweather Storm & Convective Forecast.
    ... IRELAND/N IRELAND, ENGLAND, WALES and S SCOTLAND ...

Very active cold front moving in from the west will drive a narrow squall line across Eire overnight and in across Scotland, northern England and Wales by midday Thursday, before continuing E/SE across SW England and The Midlands during the afternoon before arriving across SE England and E Anglia in the evening. A narrow band of intense rainfall will form the squall line, which will likely lead to flash flooding. Also lightning and some hail may occur. Although strong synoptic-scale wind gusts (60-70mph) in tightening pressure gradient are likely ahead of the squall line, strong convective gusts are possible within the squall line itself - with isolated damaging straightline wind gusts of 70-80mph not out the question.

Also, strong deep layer shear and extreme low-level shear (40-50 knts) is indicated just ahead of the squall line, which may allow for a Line Echo Wave Pattern (LEWP) to develop, which may have favourable conditions embedded for brief rain-wrapped EF0-EF1 tornadoes, though lack of low-level instability indicated so far suggests this is a low risk - but not to be ruled out completely.

Sligo winds really picking up 30 to 40knot gusts I would say

Rain not really here yet and no lightning but a lively night nonetheless.

Have to hit the sack unfortunately but might be up for the Dublin tornados:)

Thunder and lightning in Belmullet over the last half hour. Just been speaking to one of my friends there.

Visibility 4600 m, Temp/Dewp +7/+6 so likely to be an error.
