your post is putting doubt in my head, but i'm pretty sure gilette was mentioned during the show in jingles. it may have been one of those things that you block out after a while, like that feckin taxi ad.

It was, wasnt it? They used to do some sort of "Off The Ball, in association with Gillette" at the start or end of the breaks. Pretty sure gillette sponsored a load of the mystery voice competitions.

The mystery voice bits were hilarious too.

Don't think what is true exactly? How do you think the station makes money, its through advertising and sponsorship.

Here we go again - I know how a radio station makes money, thanks. You didn't mentioned advertising in that post and I was just suggesting that you were giving too much weight to sponsorship.
Doesn't matter if the listnership drops a bit, the way they make money is sponsorship, and Gillette are still sponsoring the show and running new stings on the show, so it's not dead in a business sense.

And I'm sticking to my guns here - Gillette was not mentioned at each ad break. Maybe not with the same certainty, but I'm sticking to them nonetheless.

There was definitely a Gillette ad on at most if not all ad breaks "off the ball in association with Gillette Fusion Proglide ... (cant remember the exact end, something like finer blades for finer shaving)

Sorry didn't mean to act as if you didn't know how a station makes money, I genuinely didn't know what you part you didn't think was true.

There were definitely stings with Gillette in and out of each ad, they'd change it around every few months, I particularly remember the Mo-vemeber specially made for movemember. Im sure someone has audio from an old show out there. Listening back to the recent shows and there are stings with gillette in them.

Yeah, I just went through yesterday's show on playback. It's not mentioned in the intro, but going into the first ad break..."In association with Gillette Mark III"...it wasn't repeated in the rest of the ad breaks I listened to though. So....I was wrong.

let's just say, it was played every now and again!

I can't believe this is in doubt. Any regular listeners to the show would know that the Gillette sting was a mainstay on every ad break.

Alright, don't rub it in.:) I have no idea how I blocked this out, I've even gone as far as thinking "why is Gillette sponsoring the show when they are never mentioned"....more than once. The mind works in mysterious ways I suppose...well, mine does obviously.

Just agree that like the rest of us, the old OTB Gillette advertising worked subliminally - you just found yourself shaving all superfluous body hair five nights a week and applying Gillette Fusion Hydra Gel all over afterwards every time! ... under new OTB you're drifting back to your old Veet Gel ways.

Are we due JNLR figures at the end of this month?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭IRE60

    25th

the show did not have enough listeners to justify that argument.

its a show with a cult following. Add to the fact that for every 2 who loved the show, 1 person hated the smugness of Ken Early.

I listened to both shows, whilst I was never a huge fan of Ken, I didn't exactly understand the hate either.

Ger Gilroy does a decent job in my opinion, the lads got a little bit above their station and didn't have the listnership to back up their demands. Its a niche show, with a niche listnership.

I agree with you.. I never liked Ken too much, and I personally found Eoin to be quite arrogant. Their arrogance in trying to tell Newstalk that they wanted a longer show, and to expect that an hour would be given to them from George H's show, which has one of the largest figures in Newstalk.

    25th April 5:00pm - that any better.......?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,000 ✭✭✭wonderboysam

ah sry didn't see the first post, thought the lads might've been returning to air or something!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭IRE60

Ahh - you thought the 25th was a return date. No, not so far. The latest figures will cover the period March 2012 to March 2013.
Given that the departures were in early March it will be difficult to gauge. I do feel that the the numbers will be continuing in the same direction as they had been.

I assume that if that's the case (a drop) we'll have the usual dissenters saying' there you go' as soon as the lads left the figures dropped.
Statistically that would not be the case. Their absence will be for 3 weeks of this coming survey, out of 52 weeks in total. Therefor they will shoulder the vast majority of any fall/gain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,779 ✭✭✭✭Ol' Donie

So these jnlr figures are for a full year? Wouldnt that make them useless for gauging, well just about anything? Or are they broken down by month or week or something?

While i'm at it, where do these figures come from? I listen to a lot of radio, have done for years, and i've never once answered any survey or anything like that.

JNLR - survey 11600 people over twelve months.

Its impossible to extract the a particular quarter so its very difficult to gauge the impact of the departures from this survey.

But wasn't there figures released in December?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭IRE60

JNLR released 4 times a year - roiling quarters:

    July 2011 to June 2012 - released July 2012
    October 2011 to September 2012 - released October 2012
January 2012 to December 2012- released Jan 2013
April 2012 to March 2013- released Apr 2013

So if there's a drop from December to March that'll be shown?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭IRE60

A drop/gain from December 2102 to March 2013 would not be shown in this survey. Those months would be included but will be bundled in with the other three quarters into one single 12 month figure and it's impossible to extract.

But surely if we know that X number of people were listening between December 2011 & December 2012, and that Y number of people were listening between March 2012 and March 2013, then you can sort of glean what sort of difference in numbers are there for the latest period.

In particular if you have a trend over say the past year or so, if there's a bigger drop this time than in previous surveys, that indicates something - right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭IRE60

Sorry - you're correct in that. You can tell the difference between the q's but not the base number.

All the OTB podcasts have fallen out of the iTunes top ten podcast charts. The Football Show had been ever-present in that top ten for years.

I, for one, don't listen anymore to anything other than the John Giles segment on Thursdays. Used to listen to the podcast the first thing in the morning on weekdays.

So the Eoin Mc Devitt boyos haven't found another gig. But there's another fella trying to do his best at short notice. Live and let live. I think he's trying his best, and having to deal with negativity from the die hards. I think he's doing alright. The JNLR won't affect his figures for another few months.
