I do understand that. Considering there isn't one single show on 2fm worth listening to (for even five minutes).

But since this nonsense started a few months ago i haven't listened to newstalk at all (in half hearted protest). But upon reflection, most of it is pretty poor. George is proud of the fact that his show is about opinon, but most of it is without any actual substance. The Tom Dunne show is rubbish. The only worthwhile presenter is Moncrieff, but a lot of the topics on his show are at best mildly interesting.

So if they were to go to 2FM would it be all five? Or I wonder would it be Eoin as presenter, Ken doing the football show, either Simon or Mark as producer and Murph as a weekly contributor? I also think the current presenter of Game On could feel rightly hard done by if he was just replaced. I don't listen that often, but when I do I always find him to be an alright presenter.

That said, the whole premise of having a sports show on 2FM is completely bonkers. Just put it on R1 where it belongs and leave 2FM to either do what it was set up to do (be a music driven station) or die off.

I agree there shouldnt be any sport at all on 2FM, it should be purely music. Im really not sure about this story. While I'd love to see the guys getting back on air as a team this may be more a case of wishful thinking, now i could be completely wrong. Theres no doubt that Eoin and the lads would boost 2fm listenership but 2fm needs to rediscover its musical identity. As for Game On as a programme its typical rte sports fair, but very much inferior to what Eoin and co did.

I don't mean to be pedantic, but this really annoyed me

The 'new ken' on off the ball, ie the guy doing the football show with gilroy, the other night mistakingly thought it was arsenal that sol Campbell left on a bosman which caused all the commotion ( in actual fact it was spurs he left, for arsenal)

While this in itself is a minor error, it annoyed me that they've tried to replace ken early, a man who iirc, knew how many months apart Gary breen and Kevin kilbane were born, with someone who didn't know the basic details of one of the most controversial transfers of the last twenty years

I'm not expecting some sort of statto, but at the same time, I'm not going to listen to a football journalist/commentator who's probably still expecting Roy Keane to start for man united (or is it Liverpool?) at the weekend. Surely a basic level of football knowledge is required

You're correct, the amount of errors is really bugging me but that's what happens when you get Gah heads like Parkinson onto a football show

You're not being pedantic at all, that is typical of the mistakes that are being made. I heard it a couple of nights recently and heard some amount of wrong info said that I & most other football fans would not make. Its not good enough really. Ken knew his stuff.

    Yep......

There are enough soccer nerds out there......it cant be hard to find one....its not that hard.

You can have a generalist covering boxing or athletics or even rugby but you just cant do it with soccer.

Unlike any other sport in this country, there are tens of thousands of people who have been liverpool or Man U or Arsenal obssessives since the age of five....... no excuse not to find one of these guys.

This is a really bad sign and something you could never have accused the exOTB lads of being. Next JNLR will be very very interesting.

have to say though, i've been enjoying some of off the ball recently. i find the interviews to be much more in depth and respectful. even though the humour isn't as quick, it's getting better.

I like Gilroy and he's a fine presenter/interviewer. But I always thought Mcdevitt excelled in this area, he always seemed to ask exactly what you would be wondering as a listener, which sounds easy but isn't. His knowledge across all sports was excellent too imo and I'm guessing he put huge research into each guest, asking the tough questions but in a respectful manner so don't agree with that at all to be honest.
Although perhaps you mean in comparison to when Mcdevitt and co first left?

I think Ger is just as good as any presenter at interviewing, I think he lacks in the less serious area's, I find it informative, but I realise im not laughing as much as I would have, sometimes the banter just isn't there, just slight gaps of emptiness when there would have something said or a joke made under the old regime.

Yeah, but this Parkinson chancer isn't even a generalist, he's a gah head, nothing more. He's probably good at that too, more power to him, but they need to just cut him from the Soccer punditry, it's embarrassing and is showing the station up completely as being overly reliant on the ex-OTB crew.

How long has it been? 6 weeks? 8? And they STILL haven't gotten a competent soccer analyst?

Does that say something about people who may have been approached?

Has Newstalk/Gilroy/Continuity OTB been turned down by people?

Or have they, unforgiveably, actually approached nobody?

Parkinson is not a good GAA pundit. Almost everything he talks about comes back to "me, me, me".

I agree with you that he is embarrassing when it comes to talking about soccer. Daithi Regan was even given the slot a few weeks back - i nearly choked on my tea and biscuits when I heard him.

I was a daily OTB listener. I still am but it is beginning to irratate me now.

Only listened to a bit of it last night, but he doesn't think that goalkeepers should be taking frees, despite Niall Morgan getting five points for Tyrone on Sunday. Root cause is that Fergal Byron used to take the Laois penalties, denying Parkie the chance of some glory.

8 weeks. Isn't about time that Ger made a decision on which show he is going to present? Surely he can't keep doing both? They're either going to have to get someone else in or trust some combination of Molloy, Barry and McIntyre to present one of them.

Haven't really tuned in since the lads left. Are they still getting all the same contributors as before (ie. US Murph, Graham Hunter, Giles, Sid Lowe etc)?

I didn't hear this at all so I don't know the context of it

Technically he was correct as Campbell did leave Arsenal on a bosman to join pompey, but not sure if it was a mistake on his part. Did he say he left Arsenal early in his career?

He could be happy with either and is waiting for Newstalk to hire someone for one of them so he can do the other?

Didnt hear it either, but Campbell leaving Arsenal (the first time) was controversial as he asked for his release so he could move over-sea's. He was given it. Last time I checked Portsmouth wasnt over-sea's :pac:

Oh I understand that, if all the above was mentioned (wanting to move overseas) then the OTB presenter got it wrong, but maybe he was actually referring to his departure from Arsenal on a Bosman which he indeed did.

Would the new 2FM boss have worked with the lads at Newstalk? Maybe they could end up there.

i just find there to be less cutting across, even with the sports news that cian murtagh reads out. it's still done, but seems a lot less.

He was CEO from 2003 to 2005. I think Eoin was doing the same job as Cian Murtagh back then, Ken would have been on OTB with Ger, I not sure about the other 3. So he would of worked with some of them before. What difference that would make?....I don't know really.

He was confusing it with the commotion around Campbell leaving spurs. The context was rvp's return to arsenal as a united player. Gilroy then corrected him

As I said, its not a major thing in itself, but it does demonstrate a lack of knowledge on the subject of English football, which I'd have thought was a pre- requisite to presenting a show based primarily on English football.

What ever people say about ken early, he knows his football. Obviously, he does the research before a show, but its clear he's followed the game since he was a kid. This other lad though, I get the impression he owned a united shirt when he was 12, but aside from that and the 'jacks heros' video in his ma's gaf, his knowledge of football is based on either what he's wikipedia'd before the show, or something he vaguely remembers hearing about second hand a number of years ago

Couldn't they just say whats occuring, for feck sake. It's all getting a bit tedious at this stage. We'll probably have to wait another couple of weeks for the next installment.

Presumably they can't, because of McDevitt's ongoing Gardening Leave from Newstalk.

Possibly, I'm not sure being on gardening leave would prohibit you from revealing where you are going to be working next - maybe it does.

Any possibility of a gig on Talksport or another British station? That would explain how things have been kept so tight but...hardly.
