I don't think its fair to sht on Ger. The show was his creation.

It's not "Ger", it's "Gil" now.. (apparently)

I don't think that many people are really. He is in a difficult situation, not of his making. If Ken and Murph had left the show and Eoin was left on his own, he would struggle - just as Ger is doing.

it's a pretty good show tonight actually.

    Message from Ken on twitter...

Sounds like something is going to happen soon.

    The listener profile has changed.

Before I stopped listening there were ads for presumably 'straight' dating agencies. Tuned in last night and there was an ad for Gay dating agencies.

Is Ger Gilroy like this guy? : http://www.theonion.com/articles/denver-optometrist-not-sure-why-he-has-gay-cult-fo,128/

I was listening to the radio while driving earlier this evening and both 2FM & Newstalk had the Leinster rugby game. From listening to this, my dream show would be the OTB lads with the RTE commentary teams. The commentary team (Dave Mac or someone?) for newstalk is nowhere near the quality of RTE's, but the punditry/show beforehand would be far better with OTB lads...

    Any chance this could happen??

It would be nice if it could happen, Mcintyre is not suitable for national radio.

The gay dating agency ads were used during the Right Hook as well

I actually prefer the show without Ken Early, McDevitt is an excellent broadcaster but Gilroy does a really good job

I prefer to get the sports coverage and rely on getting my banter elsewhere

Ya it's unfair to single out Gilroy for criticism. He is a very competent broadcaster.

I listened in for the first time this week since the lads left. The whole spark is gone out of the show. A real feel of going through the motions about the show now. What was required listening for me is now something to listen to when I'm stuck for alternatives.

I would agree with this, gilroy is a reasonable presenter but clearly compared to his predecessors he is inferior. Others have mentioned he should get credit for starting OTB in the first place and while i'd recognise this, I do think Eoin and the lads brought it to a totally different level.

I've started listening to audio books for my commute instead of the OTB podcasts

Same here. Listened to 3 shows since the lads left

I agree. The show has evolved since its beginning and will continue to do so. I'm looking forward to hearing how it will take shape in the next few months.

What was the story with all the five lads saying they'd got something? Is their 'gardening leave' (an expression I'll never understand) over by now? I reckon they thought they had something, and it fell through...........

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,009 ✭✭✭✭wnolan1992

It'll be six weeks tomorrow since the lads left. I remember someone saying around the time of the resignations that McDevitt had to see out eight weeks of leave before he could take another job, so I wouldn't be ruling out anything just yet.

I think they have something sorted out. When someone asks them on twitter when are they coming back...now the answer is "soon". Which is a lot more definite than they had been.

When you quit but can't take up the next job you spend the time tending your garden (if you are British, which is where the expression comes from).

Alan Green has quit doing 606 on BBC Radio 5.

Imagine Ken Early's alter ego, Ken Burley presenting that show.

Still a bit aimless and waffly, if he was talking about this on the radio it'd be enjoyable, doesn't translate well onto print (imo).

I've listened to the new OTB recently and it seems to have lost its way completely attempting to replicate the 'banter' of its predecessor.
Like him or not Gilroy is a competent presenter and when he is absent the show really struggles.

Agreed. Was sitting in car for nearly an hour yesterday evening from 7 - 8, Game On on 2FM was much more enjoyable...

Indeed, and its now looking like Ger was only to be an interim solution with yer man Joe looking like the new permanent anchor.

This whole thing has been a disaster for everybody, and although I am a huge fan of "the lads", they are not looking clever at the moment.

There is an Off The Ball Roadshow tomorrow night in the Mercantile in Dublin.

They were always good fun in the past, but I couldn't be arsed going this time.

Then again, it might be good if the audience got a chant going out live on air - 'Free the OTB5!' 'Bring back McDevitt' etc etc :p

there was a saturday sports show from there in the summer a few weeks before the euros. it was one of the funniest couple of hours of radio i'd heard in a long time. mcateer was on flying form with the stories. should be good again if they have the same sound crowd. other roadshows had brutal sound but that one was good.
