are the lads admitting to using homophobic slurs back in their school days?

i thought they would have been model students.

The point may have been a little complicated for you.

As an adult you're aware of the meanings of such dumb things to say, and usually you have the maturity to move beyond such crap. Whereas as a kid, or someone who gets riled up easily by the show, you don't have that excuse.

I don't know. What I do know is that actual sport isn't getting discussed because Conor McGregor said some bollocks backstage at some stupid fighting bollocks.

Yesterday they were actually outraged at the notion of Robbie Savage chatting up a mop. They are pathetic. Pathetic.

I was drivng in the car yeasterday before 8. I flicked through the radio stations.
I knew as soon as heard Kilbane say 'comments' 'and in this day and age' in that over excited way of his. And Joe say 'slurs' 'homophobic' in that overly earnest way of his. It was a sign for me not to listen.
That 30/40 seconds was enough of a red flag for me.

My initial thought was they have gone from a sports programme, to being 'global village in disguise' ?
Then in football chant parlance I had 'Are you global, are you global...are you global village in disguise' tune in my head

I ended up listening to RnaG to listen to a nice bit of trad music.
Then I thought knowing my luck Joe Molloy will move to RnaG and ruin that too.... he would be horrified that they rarely if ever refer to Northern Ireland.... it is nearly always 'Na sé chontae'. 'The six counties'.
I am sure he would be very offended on others behalf even outraged.

It's a pity Molloy never made it as pro-footballer instead:27488_60_news_hub_multi_630x0.jpg

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I saw that on the podcast description and couldn't bring myself to listen. I wish Joe had become a pro footballer so that he was the one harmlessly chatting up the mop.

I am sure he would use very mop friendly words and would make sure he was not offensive to mops.
He would never mention that rakes are much better for leaves and brushes are much better for dust! :D

At this stage OTB has gone like MTV when they stopped playing music and put on those 'reality' TV shows what's the point?
They are a shell of what they once were.

I am an occasional listener to RnaG myself. The Six Counties / Northern Ireland thing never registered with me. Someone would have to listen for hours every day to establish what you claim.

The stations should not have a policy banning staff saying "Northern Ireland" if that is what is happening. But they cannot stop politicians or others from saying "Six Counties" and I don't see why anyone would be offended. It happens on RTE English programmes and on the BBC as well.

But any shred of republicanism would offend Joe. You must acknowledge Northern Ireland's newfound identity or you are a Trump-loving fascist bigot.

That's fantastic, right up there with the poster who called the news show that George Hook's The Right Hook replaced Bart's People.

I still laugh at that now!

Plus in my view OTB has been completely derailed as a sports programme.
Ok, when it was in it's pomp Ken Earley used to be a bit annoying with his philosophy angles etc.
But at least sport used to be discussed front and centre in the most part.

In my view a previously good sports show (which I used to enjoy listening to the majority of) has gradually broadened it's scope to social justice.
And side issues have overtaken the discussion of sport itself.

I glanced back through old comments on this thread at one stage Gilroy and Molloy seemed popular.
But I feel as if they have morphed into something else entirely and it is no longer a sports show.

It is now a quasi-sports show who are more interested in off the field issues then on the field issues.
They have taken thier name 'Off the Ball' too literally?
The main question always seems to return to how do the sports people feel?
Or worse the presenters get thier feeling's hurt on behalf of a group that they do not represent!

The phrase 'How did that make you feel?' has overtaken discussions of actual sport.
The change in comments on this thread show this.

It has turned into Oprah / Sally Jesse Raphael / Giradalo / Dr Phil masquerading as a sports show.

It is now not much different from the 'human interest' stories on the 'Late Late Show'. Where discussions on sexuality, depression, life threatening illness, and political correctness take the prominent position.
Actual sport itself is now a secondary issue for OTB?

Maybe that is to be expected when Gilroy's graduate degree was a BA in English?

I am only a very casual rugby watcher / listener.
But even I can tell that the pure enthusiasm and detailed tactical discussion of Gerry Thornley is missed.
Similar to the pure enthusiasm and detailed discussion of Wooly Parkinson from a GAA standpoint.

'How does that make me feel?'

    I change channels....

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

The thread is derailed because the show is derailed. Content mirrors content. Get back to the sport Joe. Or seek out a current affairs job. Stop combining them.

Could not have said it better myself, this is exactly how I now feel about this show. It used to be the go-to, default station to listen to on my drive home from work. Now I listen to Game On, or podcasts. OTB needs to be reigned in, reminded that they are first and foremost a sports show. They need a director who will enforce that. I still find the show very listenable when Nathan and Dave are on (proof that the content is fine, but that certain other personalities are ruining the show).

It's a sports magazine show, it doesn't have a strict path of only discussing what happens on the field. You can only talk so much about who scored what and who dived where on a soccer pitch, it would be incredibly boring if so.

Some of the more interesting segments, and posters here have inadvertently acknowledged this, are about stories behind the scenes of sports people or events, not those that go through every play during a particular game.

I have no problem if they do the occasional behind the scenes type stuff.
I know there is interest in that type of thing.
But the weighting seems to be wrong now.
There seems to be very little discussion in the way of sport now.
To be completely honest I find the way they do the behind the scenes stuff boring at this stage.
As I said in my other post they always come full circle back to the same type of stuff.

I enjoy a detailed informative tactical discussion which explains to the non-sports professional {like me) about what is going on on the field. By people who played the game recently.
Maybe I am in the minority there?

To me both Joe and Ger like to pretend they are 'experts' rather then let the pro's / former high level amateur explain what xyz issue is about when it comes to tactics.

They have made themselves bigger then the show itself in thier own heads.

It is probably much easier for them to go down the off the field route because they can waffle in generalities.

And then they can't be pulled up on it by the sports people?

    It is thier comfort zone.

Also the shows 'banter' seems very forced and wastes time when they could be discussing sport.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I used to be annoyed if I missed it and would want to catch up in case there was anything good on it.

Now I tend to avoid it, in case it annoys me. With the off the field guff and forced banter.

Kilbane is a bit annoying. He seems to irritated if someone disagrees with his point, because he played at a good level.

I think Kilbane is there as the token 'name' to give the show some sort of credibility.
As they have no other former players on the panel day in day out.
    Just journalists.

I think it would be nice if they got another former pro/athlete/high level amateur who is outspoken and challenge the others views a bit.

Parkinson was a great at this he just shoot from the hip and had to struggle to hold himself back at times...'Ah lads!'

Today's Football Show features a piece on the lack of black and ethnic minority managers.

    Really!

(I believe these things need to be discussed, but there are actual games on tonight. And last night.)

Can't they go behind the scenes without turning it into a moral lesson to the listeners. Can't they do it without pontificating to us about their limited and biased view of what's right and wrong? I don't go to mass for a reason. Can't they do it without mentioning doping from a moral perspective? Indeed, can't they do it without mentioning the word doping full stop?

Jaysis, I don’t know how so many lads on this are triggered by the show.

I have a friend who is extremely conservative and intolerant of anyone who is not a white male and he thinks the show is better than ever. Loves it.

I think some of you need to accept that people’s opinions will differ from your own. I think instead of complaining on here you could write to OTB and they might address your views on their Friday mailbag thing. The lads control the editorial content but if enough people complain they could change it. It will be more productive than annoying us about it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

How can you discuss doping outside of the scope of morality? It's a black and white issue, you either acknowledge it's cheating or you don't. You can try stick your head in the sand when it comes to doping all you want, but it's not a problem that's going to go away because you don't want to know about it.

It's only a matter of time before "Text us on 53106" becomes "Text us on 53106 to make a €2 donation to Save The Children".

Edit: I'm totally joking, of course. I don't have any major issue with the show at all, other than the odd fact that I prefer to hear any of the stand in presenters over the main two.

And I like Kilbane a lot on it.

Yeah they’re having Garth Crooks on :( Possibly the most comically ill informed clueless “pundit” out there. Constantly playing the racist card too while not boring us with his football insight.

You are completely missing the point why the likes of me have gone off the show.
It is not to do with race.
It is not to with politics.

The fact you bring these issues up demonstrates to me that you cannot see that it is no longer a real sports show.

To Paraphrase Brian Clough (a comment he made that is quoted often on OTB when 'societal' football issues appear)

"If I want to listen to sports /sports debate I listen to sports radio

If I want to listen to classical music I listen to cultural highbrow radio classical fm

If I want to listen to Irish I listen to RnG

If I want to listen to James Blunt I listen to that easy listening station who's name I forget, (but james blunt is always on it when the neighbour has it on in the garden) 4fm?

If I want to listen to Pop I listen to Spin FM / 2FM

If I want to listen to social justice and peoples problems I listen to Joe Duffy

If I want to listen to discussions on unmarried mothers / foreigners coming into the country I listen to late night talk radio 98 FM /FM 104

So tell me son, why would you listen to Off the Ball if is no longer a sports show?"

As for the mailbag thing that is highly censored and highly controlled.
Easiest way is to vote with the fingers and not listen.
I want to listen to sports show.
Is that too much to ask?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.
