I really enjoy their RoI coverage and love Kilbane's enthusiasm and insight. If I could time their commentary and analysis with what I was watching live I'd take it over RTE any day.

That rugby live show last night was dull in the extreme.

I listened to a bit of the rugby show when Keith Wood was describing playing a game against Young Munster and himself & Clohessy started boxing ending up with Clohessy throwing him into the crowd. Wood described getting about 20 belts in the head from the crowd.

Queue great laughter from the OTB audience.

Wood continues on saying Clohessy pulled him out of the crowd and they hugged while the other 28 players fought around them.

Queer more laughter from the OTB audience.

Not a peep from Joe about the violence that was just described.

I wonder when there is the next mass brawl in a GAA or Soccer game will the boys from Off the Ball just shrub their shoulders and laugh about it or will they be crying from the rooftops talking about the bad example it is for kids and how big suspensions need to be handed out.

I was just saying that recently. They seem to think ex players acting like absolute toerags on the pitch is hilarious. (Where's the concern for concussion in that story?)

But then jump straight on the express elevator to the top floor of high horse towers if someone brings, say, a flag they don't like to a match.

Was there much point having Tim Vickery back on last night? I know what Messi did was great, but he pretty much repeated every single thing he said a few days back when he was on

Listened to the Football Show last night. Joe Molloy was so negative about Ireland and O'Neill. Kilbane was much better. Molloy needs to remember that's he's a presenter not an expert.

Hang on, you have to be careful with Joe, we nearly went into meltdown with Kevin and John Hartson implying that Joe was NOT a footballing man there at the end of last week. He would not shut up about it for a good 2 minutes, even pointed out that he was not happy about it, like crying to two ex pros about it

Oh good. A rugby live show. Again.

Seems to be one of these every five minutes.

The same guys as guest . To be fair, they are all good to listen too, but only so many times they can run the same old stories

Did he not mean 'in it' in the colloquial sense, as in 2/ 3/ 4 goals was the predicted goal-difference?

if Tipperary beat Kilkenny by 2 points, most people will understand what is being said if someone comments 'there were only two points in it at the final whistle', or some similar formula of words.

It's very ambiguous language, alright. But I'm pretty sure he was referring to goal-difference, not the combined scores of the two teams.

I seem to remember him saying it would be tight in the first half and then it would open up.
In fairness to him he was ridiculously excited.
Whatever else is said about Kilbane you can't accuse him of not caring about the Irish team.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I'd have to agree with you. Their match commentary is second to none, Dave McIntyre is top class and Kevin kilbane comes into his own when he's in the thick of the action.
I've often tried to sync OTB commentary with RTE coverage but I'm afraid it doesn't work.
As for the rugby road show last night l taught it was as dull as dish water, struck with it for an hour but found it tough going.
Nathan was in the hot seat tonight, in my opinion he is the best OTB presenter, in a sort of a less is more way.

I'm fairly in agreement with most of what has been said. Some call Kilbane "Kilbland" but the man has great passion and it shines through in his commentary. I like him.

As for the rugby road show.....same old, same old. I'm a rugby guy but the old war stories from the vets we've all heard before and I worry for the people in the audience breaking their arse laughing at them. It's almost a conditioned response at this stage, much like Pavlov's dog.

    Agreed on McIntyre and Nathan.
When they are on it makes me want to listen to show.
When Gilroy and/or Molloy is on makes me want to change channel or turn off.
Unless it is something really interesting then I put up with it.

Is there any chance Newstalk could extend thier Irish times ban to Gilroy and Molloy as well? :D

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Previewed Spurs v Madrid tonight with "Spanish football writer" Andy West (BBC, Football 360). Never heard him before, is he new on OTB?

Only as Sid Lowe has occasional articles in the IT, has he been disappeared now too?

Andy Lee was on last night. Great listening to him as usual

A half hour into the show before they mention that Cork city won the league of Ireland, yes they gave it a whole 10 seconds.

They did cover it a bit last night in that they layed out what was at stake and kept going to their reporter at the game. So they haven't ignored it.

I've started to notice this mentioned on the sports bulletins on Newstalk's sister station TodayFM, that they keep mentioning "from Off The Ball website"

I thought Todayfm were independent of Newstalk, even they co-habit the same building!

Also is Paul Collins independent himself, as i saw once on his twitter page, he's got his own sports website!

    Thanks

Yes I heard that, but could u imagine them not talking about either of the all Ireland's finals the day after the game. They could have got someone on to talk about it, I'm sure some cork city player was available. They did nothing on it.

The reality is that the man on the street is not that interested.

With respect, thats just a fact.

I wish it werent that way - in fact my own view is that League of ireland gets a vastly disproportionate amount of media coverage relative to its popularity.

Very few people show up to games, and yet there are match reports in the papers, its on the TV monday night and as mentioned its covered by radio also.

Wasnt the Bohs Cork game live on RTE Friday night?

Plenty of other domestic sports in Ireland - Basketball, athletics, badminton, martial arts, hockey, squash to name a few - never ever get a mention.

The world Taekwondo championships could be on in Ireland and you wouldnt even know.....

In fact last week it was!

I would think that a high profile sports show should be talking about all of the above. the amount of coverage that the premier league gets on the show is insane. more often than not, the first half hour news round up tends to focus on football, as well as the football show from 9-10.

a 15 minute segment on Tuesdays is pretty appalling for the league here. the game on Tuesday was probably one of Oisin Langan's first games of the year.

    Well why should they be?

What do people want to listen to?

What Newstalk is doing here is piggybacking....

Soccer - as a sport internationally - invests gazillions in advertising, promotion, branding - directly and indirectly through the likes of Sky Sports.

The GAA has done similar - most particularly through its investment in Croke Park, as a place that Irish sports fans want to go to....regardless of who is playing.....

What has League of ireland (or the FAI) done? What has Athletics Ireland done or any of the other domestic sports bodies - to bring in fans...

apart obviously from Rugby which has moved domestic Rugby from being primarily a domestic league played out in basic club grounds, to large Irish professional clubs playing in outstanding stadiums in international competition.....which brings in the fans both in stadiums and in the mass media.

League of ireland, if you want to compare it, gets far more coverage than the domestic AIL rugby leagues. When was the last time we heard a feature on Garryowen or Cork Con?

Newstalk is piggybacking - its reaching out to a large audience that is already there. Its a commercial organisation, they have no mandate to promote anyone but themselves.....

    Sad but true.

Seems to be a distinct lack of football culture in this country. It's seen as some sort of consumer product that you watch every Saturday from your coach.

The though of travelling up to Ballybofey to watch your team on a wet Friday night would be an anathema to these people.

Newstalk to their credit have tried to promote the league over the years. Even going as far as sponsoring the now defunct A Championship which effectively served as the third tier of LOI for a couple of years.

all very true. i just wish it was otherwise.

if that guy who took his top off at the olympics (i'm aware of the irony here!) didn't actually take it off, they'd have gone a hell of a long time without ever mentioning badminton on the show.

LOI had 325,000 patrons through the gates between start of season to early August. Cork City FC on track to have had 100,000 through their turnstiles this season. I somehow doubt the AIL or its constituent clubs could compare to that.

None of the so-called minority sports get a look in until someone Irish maybe does well in them.

I recall a man from a rowing club being interviewed on a local radio station last year at the time of the Olympics. He began the interview by saying that it was the 1st time in the almost 30 years that the station had been on air that anyone from their sports department had phoned up to discuss rowing.... Needless to say the rowing club had been there for generations.
