Anyone have tips on things to put down in the application?

Basically make yourself sound like you'll get on well with other people in your flat and that you'll participate in Halls life. Mention any interests you have, maybe previous experience living with people (like if you've gone to Irish College or something) etc. The Halls community seems to be pretty important to the powers that be, so sound like you'll get involved.
Also, be honest when describing yourself, as they do make an effort to put you in a flat with people you'll get along with - especially if you're gonna be sharing a room. I didn't really believe that they bothered, but for various reasons I now have utter faith that they do.

    College – On Campus
    Goldsmith
    Trinity Hall – Apartments
    Trinity Hall – Cunningham House

Can someone explain to me the difference between these?

Cheers mate, that's pretty much the sort of application I was aiming for so seems I'm on the right track!

Doubt you'll even be considered for the first two. As far as I'm aware, campus and goldsmith are only given to scholars and students in later years (eg. 4th year).

I think the apartments are the modern rooms whilst cunningham house has the older style ones.

EDIT: Should I mention that I play guitar or would that hurt my chances as a guitar might be considered 'noisy'

"On Campus" means rooms that are physically on the main campus of Trinity College: Front Square, Botany Bay, etc.

Goldsmith Hall is a complex adjacent to the Pearse St DART station, but connected to the main campus by a bridge and thus also described as "campus" accommodation.

Trinity Hall apartments are sets of apartments with rooms and shared kitchens.

Cunningham House consists of single rooms not divided up into apartments, with bathroom and kitchen facilities shared by a larger number.

There's a music room, with loads of new equipment, and this year's music officer has lots of events and stuff planned! Mention the guitar and say you really want to get involved!

If i'm hoping to get a single room in Cunningham House then is it single that I pick as my preferred room type? There's also apartment single and flat single. Feeling pretty stupid but the fear of getting the wrong sort of accomodation (or worse, none at all) is tying me up in knots.

P.s. Apart from being in an older building and sharing bathrooms etc. is there any disadvantages to living in Cunningham rather than the modern building?

There's an actual advantage to Cunningham, as it has wifi, unlike the modern building.

A disadvantage would be that Cunningham doesn't LOOK as nice, as the decor is much older. I don't know how much of an impact that would have on your decision. I'm not sure about this, but as an older building, I would imagine that the insulation wouldn't be as good.

It's also supposed to be much quieter than modern, as it's a little out of the way in comparison, but it's a matter of personal preference whether that's a disadvantage or not.

It is a bit out of the way, you won't exactly be in the middle of the action in Cunningham House...not gonna lie, you guys are a bit like outsiders when it comes to halls nights out etc, because predrinking and silent discos and stuff all happen in the courtyards, which are on the other side of the vicinity. There are less of you as well, compared to living in modern accommodation where there are loads of other people in the building. Also, modern rooms are just much more homely...

Ah okay. The decor isn't important to me although the quieter bit… do people mix between the modern building and cunningham? Quiet would be good coming up to exam time but after a year of knuckling down I'd like to have as much fun as possible.

People do mix, but Cunningham is a bit more isolated.. I had several friends in Cunningham, but I never went down there, we always met up in my apartment. The whole shared living space thing makes it a bit more of a pain to have a couple people over I'd imagine. One of my friends from the modern apartments used to go down but it always came across as a bit of a pain in the arse.

Well that's what the majority of rooms are. So yes, you're in with a shout with a decent application and it'll help if you're not from Dublin :)

In the box with 1800 characters, what kind of stuff am I meant to say? I understand the hobbies thing but do I need to say how I don't live in Ireland or do they already know that? And should I re-say how I want a single en-suite in modern halls? Anything else? Haha, sorry for all the questions

Edit: no wifi in the modern halls?? Huh?!

You don't need to say you want a single ensuite, they already know that. Is there not a separate box for grounds on which you should live in halls? If there is, state that you don't live in Ireland in there, if not, mention it in the box with 1800 characters. You should mention things that make you sounds sociable, because contributing to the halls community is a BIG requirement. They don't want someone who won't mingle with the other residents. You should also say something brief about your determination to do well/ability to get your head down and study when it comes to it, because obviously studying is a also a big part of living in halls and they don't want someone who is going to cause a disturbance around exam times.

Hi, in the accomodation application I ticked the "trinity hall- modern" choice but when the email of Complete application arrived it read only " trinity hall". Is it normal? :)

In Cunningham house, how many people would be sharing that kitchen and the bathroom? Is the kitchen bigger to compensate for the large number, is there more than one shower/toilet? Is there anyone on here who has stayed in Cunningham and if so, would you choose it again?

Getting the impression that it's a bit dingy and isolated socially. Not what I want to hear just before I apply for accommodation!

It is a bit dingy and isolated to be honest, but it does have wifi and some people like that it's cosy and quiet...about 10 or 11 sharing the kitchen I think and I think there are two bathrooms per apartment...not quite sure about the bathroom thing though.

I shared modern accommodation when i was in halls and never regretted it for a second! Much preferred sharing and glad i didn't have my own room because my boyfriend did and all his flat mates spent most of their time in their own rooms, they didn't get to know each other as well as we did.

How much should we be writing in the "grounds to support your application" bit? Are people making full use of the 1800 characters or are some people writing just small paragraphs?

Make the most of the 1800 characters. Write about things that make you look social, they want you to contribute to the halls community, and put in a small bit to show you can study when it comes down to it and won't be a disturbance around exam time.

Yep, you have an ethernet port in your room for internet. It's a pain but you adapt fairly quickly. The cables (if you don't have one, they're a 5er in the shop by the cafeteria) reach your bed and desk so you have internet more or less wherever you'd need it in your room, but not outside it.

(Unless perhaps you or a flatmate has a Mac.. Signal bouncing is a wonderful thing ;) )

If u apply for a single room and there aren't any available are you automatically added to the shared list in Modern??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73 ✭✭rosiee

couldn't you connect your laptop with the ethernet cable and use the laptop as a hotspot for your phone?
