You know, something I've noticed about Gore Verbinski is that he seems to be unwilling on doing a movie in 3D, native or converted. It's probably a big reason why he didn't direct the fourth Pirates movie (which was mostly native 3D), or in Rango, which you'd think it would fit the bill easily for having it in 3D, what with it being a CG animation, but even that wasn't given that treatment. My guess would probably for artistic purposes, since there is a subtle about of artificial film grain, obviously to emulate the westerns that it's based on, but you know that Paramount would have wanted it in 3D, either way. But then you get a big, executive controlled blockbuster like The Lone Ranger, which Disney is probably regretting on not giving it a conversion, seeing how much of a loss the movie is making so far.

Another random film thought, brought to you by Nerdkiller, later to be argued with Johnny Ultimate, later on.

Perhaps he's one of the few people in modern blockbuster film making who realize its, er, sh1t?

First 5 minutes - 'oooh' 'ahhhh' 'look at that!'

Next hour and 55 minutes 'I don't even notice the 3D anymore, why am I putting my eyes through this ****e?'

Okay, maybe an exaggeration..or hmmm, on reflection, maybe not. It's well passed it's sell by date at this point. Flogging a dead horse at this stage.

Oh a side point, looked up Gore Verbinski on IMDB as I've never heard of him. Thought he may be some big time director I should know - nope! What a list forgettable films :pac:

Ah now, the first three Pirates films were fun and Rango is brilliant.

It's no secret that I dislike Crash Bandicoot. I even bought the first one a few months back to give it another shot, but once again came out disappointed. However, I broke out Crash 3 (bought out years ago, but never actually got around to playing it) tonight and had an absolute blast with it. Much tighter controls which lend themselves to more accurate platforming, and ultimately a better game. The level design is also a lot more inspired and entertaining.

The first Crash Bandicoot was never a good game and neither was the second. There's a severe lack of variety to the levels and they only rated well since it was the only competitor to Mario 64 (and people ignored the awesome Klonoa and Jumping Flash games :( )

Crash 3 though is really good.

I wouldn't worry about it, Retr0 has a very limited spectrum when it comes to rating games.

They're either absolute garbage and deserve to be spat on or the best thing ever made and to be fapped over daily. There is no in between :pac:

In reality, it really goes like this -

Garbage. Not bad. Good. Very good. Stellar.

The first two crash games fall into the 'good' category. They're okay games, did the job when they came out...will probably give you a bit of a nostalgia buzz now. Worth playing for a few minutes but will grow tired of them quickly. Crash 3 is indeed better.

Which reminds me, I acquired Crash 3 in very dubious means. My friend said he had it and offered it to me for a tenner - I jumped on it at the time as it was a new game, thought my friend was mental.

He comes to deliver it and it's in an Xtra Vision box. 14 year old me knew better than to ask any questions.

My conscience got the better of me though and I asked after about a week. He caved and told me. He went into Xtra Vision and when nobody was looking, leaped over the counter, grabbed a load of games and ran out the door.

I very promptly handed the game right back.

Lets just say that in the long run, that would turn out to be the least of his crimes!

What's it like to have morals? I've read about them a fair bit in my time but never quite understood them...

That's a great story. It changed my life. I'm off back to Rage to hand in that copy of Alien Soldier and tell them how much it's really worth.

    Actually **** that.

You lept over the counter, grabbed Alien Soldier and ran out the door?

I thought you'd just bought it for a good price...

I've always had an issue in handling stolen goods. A 'steal' as in getting something for a good price, well, that's a different thing altogether!

I still haven't played Jumping Flash either. Always thought it looked crap whenever I saw it in games shops back in the PS1 days. Looks like I was completely wrong!

I still have Colin McRae 04 on the ps2 from chart busters that I never returned. #swag #yolo #f*ckdapolice.

Maybe I'm the reason they went out of business.

I am now lucky enough to have all three Jumping Flash games, Pyongy displayed the hitherto unknown, Japan-only 3rd title before he disappeared to lands more green and fertile.
They are magnificent, each one a little more completely unhinged compared to the previous.
I'd love to see them remastered to the 3DS, although not going to happen, Sony IP and all that, although in 3D.... could be awesome

I have been playing Dotstream via emu on the AWSD, very nice indeed, although some unnerving slowdown has crept in.... not good

No, it was all the copies of Driver 3 they couldn't sell that did it, oh sorry, Driv3r!

at least it wasnt as bad as Xtravision having to give away all those copies of Intermission for free, and then Miami Vice, and then In Bruges.
no prizes for spotting the link between those 3.

For a game at the genesis of 3D gaming it did first person platforming properly back in 1994 and yet it wasn't until Metroid Prime in 2002 that somebody actually applied what Jumping Flash had done to another game. Even now first person games still can't seem to get platforming right.

When you jump in Jumping Flash the camera tilts downward so you know exactly where you are going to land. Metroid Prime does the same thing.

It does look extremely rough with very low poly objects and a lot of untextured surfaces but once you get used to it the aesthetics do grow on you. It looked quite basic even on release but then they kind of had to be since the levels were so big.

    Definitely give them a go.

    You did them a favour.

Come to think of it I'm pretty sure my copy of Terminator 2 came from Chartbusters.

Your friend didn't grow up and buy a Micra did he? :pac:

No sign of said ram raider these days. Either the law finally caught up with him or his missus has him well whipped.

And, also at the dawn of 3D gaming they got 3D platforming completely wrong, in Turok on the N64.
It actually encapsulated everything that went wrong with the genre, with dreadful fogging, identikit enemies, terrible checkpoints, but the jumping from platform to platform, a feature that arose in so many parts of Turok, and the player spent so much time recovering from bad jumps, dreadful.
I think it was only the diverse weapon set and explosion effects that were really interesting, but even then you were firing at enemies rushing you from behind a think layer of the aforementioned fog.
I played some of the better second title, but it didn't fix the dreadful insistence on jumping from platform to platform with unseen edges and unseen feet.

Jumping Flash, Metroid Prime, Mirrors Edge, these are the games over the years that seemed to get the formula right.

Part of the charm of Jumping Flash is the visuals, it'd look mighty weird in Cryengine 3!

I was PM'ing him a little while ago, he's still about but life has gotten in the way of gaming.
Hoping he can make it to the Beers on the 26th, nice to see him, to see everyone in the flesh every now and again.

Hoping we can convince the ever elusive EnterNow to come, perhaps he'll be in disguise, as Norm from accounts or something.... Ronald the Intern maybe

Haven't seen much about the 3DS version other than Link can do a Paper-Mario trick but if you've played the original and still don't like it then you're probably in a minority alright.
