it's been brought to my attention that you can get a port of the original Metroid on on the GBA. I must acquire this. For all my sins, I've never really played a Metroid game. I remember jamming on one waaay back on my Gameboy as a kid, but that's it. I've had Super Metroid on SNES for years, but I've never gotten around to playing it.

Don't bother playing the original. It's not possible to beat unless you map the game with graph paper and it's very basic. The series perfected the gameplay with Super Metroid and it's the one to play. If you must then start with Zero Mission because it's superb and a modernised remake of the original.

I must keep an eye out for Zero Mission then. I'll get around to starting up Super MEtroid some day, but it won't be any time in the next few months.

Is that combat scene caused by the pressing of the "X" button alone?
Is it preceded and succeeded by a 15 minute cutscene involving mobile phones with screens, comments about the best way to cook noodles and a long lost love from long ago, now lost?

I think it might need some stick twirling to do that, but since the demo doesn't have that weapon, I can't tell. But what I do know, is that the cutscenes will be much shorter since the pacing of the game is different from other Metal Gear games.

It's a Platinum game, so its safe to say it will require some player effort.

Anyone playing Ni No Kuni? Such a joyous piece of software!

    .

You do know not all JRPGs are populated with spiky haired moany teenagers? :pac:

I'm in two minds about ni no kuni. While the pokemon-esque aspect interests me, the traditional jrpg side of things scares me away. I probably will get it eventually but whether or not I'll get into it and put the time into it is another thing. I usually have to force myself to sit down and play an rpg.

Again not all JRPGs are the same and once you step outside of the world of Square Enix they diverge an awful lot with many of them sticking to Western RPG templates.

Ni No Kuni however is supposedly as JRPG as you can get so might be best approached with caution :)

Its very frustrating as I totally understand where Dr bob is coming from - but as a result hes missing out on some amazing games. What scifi buff would dislike Phantasy Star IV? What person would dislike Earthbound, full stop!

Based on the first few hours I'd say a Studio Ghibli fan would get a lot out of it. Too early to call on the story front (lighthearted with a dark undercurrent so far), but the presentation is just superb and Joe Hisashi's soundtrack majestic. It means you can just walk around a town taking in the sublime sights while a beautiful orchestral composition accompanies you.

Gameplay wise, definitely indebted to Dragon Quest more than anything, with sprinklings of various other influences. But I'm loving it so far overall. At the very least it might be the best looking and sounding game this gen has had to offer.

About 5/6 hours into it right now. Absolutely love every bit of artwork I see in it. Battle mechanics are fun too as I get more used to them

No spiky haired teens in Phantasy Star. Good old Rieko Kodama, she drew everything in awesome big hair 70/80's anime style. It's like Battle of the Planets the game!

Wizard's edition arrived today, looking forward to getting stuck into it when I have the time to dedicate to it, apparently 'Irish folk music' was an influence on Joe Hisashi while composing the soundtrack.

I love how japanese used live action actors in their game trailers.

Phantasy Star 3's trailer however is just plain weird.

Will yours be a proto version {kickstarter} or a retail version, as I think the retail version is to have better screens isn't it?

It'll be the proto I think. The retail wont be available for a good while yet.

    Edit:
They call it the developer version, not proto.
