Nearly got shafted there this morning.
I called into the Swords branch of HMV to book a copy of the booster pack of Skylanders: Giants.
I gave the minion a €20 deposit and made sure he understood that this would hold a copy for me today, so's I can call into the shop and pick it up with son this afternoon.
"No problem" the minion said and took my money, leaving me with a print out of my details etc.
I finished Resi Revelations a couple of weeks ago so decided to drop it in and put a few more euro off the Skylanders game, my son paying towards it with his savings.
I asked the minion, a new one, not the last one, if my copy was on hold there for later on.
She replied, after consulting the computer and her manager, that minion no.1 had, in fact, booked me a copy in a delivery some 2 weeks away.
I expressed my disbelief and so minion no.2 went to the store room and got one of the only 6 copies of the booster pack out and put my name on it.
I can speculate as to the disaster that may have unfolded had I arrived later on with Jack and found that half wit of a shop assistant had frakked up my order.
Explanation as to why this error was made?
"He's new, only here 2 weeks".
    Muppet!!!!

Ah yes, bricks n mortar stores...ya gotta love em

On the plus side, at least if a store bugger up your order you can go in and vent. It's not quite the same giving out to an automatic email response!

Endure the whole traffic filled drive into town again?
    Pay for parking again?
Wait in the shop & vent to some gormless assistant who you know doesn't give a fukc & is biting their lip from telling you to fukc off?
Watch them scratch their head while they try to sort out the problem?
Be told "eh not sure, it should be there"?
Go all the way home again, & repeat the process when it finally 'is there'?

No thanks man, a simple email is usually enough to rectify any problems. Amazon have recently had a problem with an order of mine, was sorted with one email :)

Yeah but...you don't get to shout at someone. Shouting at people is very important :)

In fairness a new HMV staff member might have ****ed up the order but they also sorted it out there and then, give them a break guys.

All I'm saying is Cidey is lucky he returned, or there would have been one disappointed kid. As for giving them a break, it far from rocket science isn't it? If its someone's first day thats forgiveable, letting them take orders unsupervised however, isn't.

You have to remember that Skylander is crystal meth for kids as well.

Just managed to get Doom 3: BFG Edition. Now if you excuse me, I'll step away from the podium to let the detractors of the game voice their opinion.

Well the eurogamer review said it best:
The truth about Doom 3, and it breaks my heart to say it, is that it just isn't very good.

All I can say is please don't shout or kick up a stink at retail staff. Having worked in retail since I was 16 I can say that it gets you nowhere.

Oh well, I guess there's always the chance that we might see a more classic style Doom 4 with dozens of monsters in each room...plus actual mod support and online game search. Right Rage?

Pretty much what I wanted to say. I don't like that whenever someone in retail makes an error people tend to consider them retarded and that is acceptable to degrade them by shouting at them.

Agreed, its 99% of the time bad management. I was in retail for four years, & its nigh impossible to provide the service you want to provide because at times you just can't. Its infuriating & soul destroying because it makes you look bad, when its always terrible management, lack of or poor training, cost cuts, or a combination of all three.

I don't bother getting worked up at the front facing staff because its rarely if ever their fault, I actually pity them in these situations

I went in to collect it with my son an hour ago and it took 15 mins to process whatever minion no.1 did to the preorder.
Now, it was minion no.2 who looked after me this morning who sorted it out in the end, with the assistance of the manager.
What a pain in the danglys.
Online might be a better option but it is nice to engage in the bricks and mortar.
Still.... that was HMV, not sure it would've been any better in Gamestop or Smyths, at least the game was a fiver cheaper in HMV.

Oh, saw Doom 3 there for the current gen consoles, selling at 29.99.
Tbh, there's a lot of content there for your money, but is it content you'll want to play.
Like I said, I enjoyed it first time through, not sure the extra mission packs and the inclusion of Doom and Doom 2 make it worth the money.

And, for another fiver, I can get the superb Spec Ops: The Line, or for less you can get the excellent Crysis on XBL.

When I make mistakes in store it's usually the customers fault.

No I sell snake oil...or I mean 3 mobile products. Also I have a minion, a solitary flying monkey.

    'Whats the coverage like?'
'I, er, have no issues, er, with it.'
'Do you yourself have any 3 products?
'I, er, do have tree products, I have, er, an apple.'
    Next week
'My apple iPhone no can have general discussion! You said yours was fine!'
'Ill think you fine I said nothing of the sort. And I am not the salesperson you are looking for'*gestures with hand*
'Er, yes, you are not the salesperson I'm looking for.'

I worked for xtravision and any issues I ever had was because of a management decision and front line staff get no backing.
Once had a lady devour me because she couldn't get an offer that was gone for a month. We had rang her a month and a week prior to explain that the offer was ending and you can't have a deposit on an offer. Flipped out on phone and hung up, why I will never figure out.
Tried to get me fired a d complained that I wouldn't giver her €100 euro of free stock.
Area manager, after I called him, said to tell her to quietly fop off. In the end she got her way after throwing her tantrum and 3 weeks later i got a written warning from area manager for a customer complaint.

Retail to make mistakes but a lot of the time it actually is the general public, in my experience.
In saying that, sometimes staff are ****e.

I'll always choose brick and mortar over online when feasible, in particular when buying hardware on release. Had a lousy experience trying to replace a faulty phone bought online a number of years ago. on the other hand my 3DS had a problem with the lower screen the day I bought it, so I got it replaced the next day (a saturday). It wouldn't even have been in transit towards amazon or wherever until the following Monday.

I guess with age I've acquired patience (and the fact that I have less money now than I had in college, I'm going backwards) so I don't have to have games day 1.

Just trying out the Everdrive and it's working great. However my megadrive pads are knackered, all the games are in ****ty 50 Hz so need a mod. The worst thing however is that I'm playing it through RF. Oh my ****ing god is it disgraceful! I'm sorry ciderman but RF really isn't acceptable it looks disgusting. Hopefully I can get these sorted out soon.

Does anyone have any links to the theory behind 2D shooter? As in the thought that goes into shooting patterns, enemy movement patterns and the like?

Play Radiant Silvergun, Gradius V, Darius Gaiden and G-Darius, it's all the education on the subject you will need. I read somewhere that they have to use a weird form of maths and programming to render crazy bullet patterns so that there isn't more slow down.

Cheers but I was thinking more along the lines like design docs, analysis's and the like. I'm doing a 2D shooter for my final year project.
