I suppose it comes down to where the value is in the second round. If Tyrann was picked he'd be a bit of a media circus i reckon, thats fine if he performs on the field. He's the type of player AJ wouldn't go near, not sure how Telesco will view him

Crikey - a few mocks now have Joeckel, Fisher and L Johnson all gone by the time we pick. I've even seen Menelik Watson put in the first by some. Tough break. A very good point being made on the Chargers forum is that often times Rivers couldn't step up into the pocket when he was pressured off the edge and so the interior of the line could use some help too. We might well have to make do with Warmack/Cooper. After that it has to be BPA. I'd love to see us pick up a good pass rushing OLB somewhere in the draft. I had mocked Chase Thomas to us before. Now I see Mayock has a guy by the name of Jamie Collins ranked as his #2 3-4 OLB (ahead of Mingo). Should be available in the 2nd though corner is the obvious direction to go with that pick

Think its still too early to predict the top 3 LT prospects being gone. I'm really hoping Smith and Barkley put on great pro days, maybe force Oakland and Arizona to take them and if thats the case then we should be able to get Johnson.
The interior of the line can definitely be upgraded but Rivers health is being put at risk by the hammering he's taken from unseen hits. Also fumbled the ball numerous times from these hits. If we can keep the pressure in front of him where he can see it then he should be less jumpy in the pocket, its the blind hits that are affecting him i think. I'd hope if we can't get a LT or Milliner in round 1 we go for a pass rusher, not a huge Mingo fan, i'd love Jones

Eric Winston getting cut from the Chiefs will affect us. It means that a LT is definitely going no.1 so no guarantee we'll get one at no.11.
On the flip side Winston could be someone who would help us out, he started for 5 seasons in Houston who ran a ZBS and would definitely be an upgrade on Clary. Was hoping we'd go after him last year but he got a big offer from KC, if he's looking for reasonable money then i'd try do a deal. If we're changing scheme then a player with experience of the system would be very useful on the roster and one less hole in the line to be filled

Well it has started Takeo Spikes has been released.
Bigby released today, surprised with that just because of numbers, Maybe Jammer is coming back?

That leaves us about 12M under the cap. With Garay going that is another 5M. We need to leave around 5M aside for Rookies, which leaves 12M+ for free agency.

Tom Telesco says he likes Brandon Taylor, Darrell Stuckey. Adds: "We'll add some competition for those guys."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 829 ✭✭✭Ronaldinho

Oh dear: Telesco has dropped his first clanger....http://boltbeat.com/2013/03/09/chargers-plan-on-using-low-rfa-tender-on-danario-alexander/ Walterfootball has given him a "Millen" grade on this one..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,256 ✭✭✭Molly

Not really a clanger, you have a receiver who has never been able to stay healthy for an extended period of time due to having the knees of an 80 year old. The Chargers still have first refusal on anything he gets offered. They're comfortable with offering him the low round and I imagine will work something out with him in the near future once a market is set for him. Anyone playing big money for Danario is taking a huge risk. I put more faith in articles written by Bill Williamson then I would in walterfootball. Boltbeat is a terrible site.

I don't like the idea of giving him a long-term deal either with his injury history but the 2nd round tender was a happy medium between that, and letting him walk for no compensation which is how I think it will pan out. I'd love to know what Rivers makes of the decision!

Been away for a few days so catching up on what has gone on.... I see Spikes, Bigby and Garay are for the high jump even if Garay has not officially been cut yet. Surprised to read about Goodman getting a 1 yr deal. I reckoned he'd have been gone. Also reading Vasquez is out testing the waters and that we are players for LeVitre. Cason all but gone apparently. Many talking about Jerraud Powers who Telesco drafted. I don't see the 3 Tackles being gone by pick 11. I've also a funny feeling Johnson could be the second one off the board. We could end up with Fisher. If all 3 are gone we take BPA. That player could be Cooper or Warmack.

Hadn't heard about Goodman getting an extension, i would have cut him.
Vasquez will be in Indy it seems, Jimmy Raye must have been a fan of his. I think giving up on Vasquez to get Levitre is good business if we can do it, if not then Guard becomes a major area of need.
Losing Cason sucks for this season, we'll be very inexperienced at CB although there are lots of FA CBs so we might make a play on one of those.
To get one of the 3 LTs we need the Eagles and the Cards to pick elsewhere, if that happens then one will fall to us. If they're all gone then i think there will be very good pass rushers available or maybe Star Lotulelei even.
I read that Barnes is attracting a lot of interest as a FA so a spaecialist pass rusher is needed.

My reading is Telesco and McCoy don't see Vasquez as fitting the scheme Whiz will run. He's being made out to be something he is not. Ok so it means we've only 1 starting lineman returning but is that such a bad thing considering their performance last year. I'm happy to go with Hardwick at center and any mix of 1st round pick, LeVitre, Haslam and Winston. Maybe even Dombo could fit in at Guard if we are desperate.

Loving the cornerback chatter, Derek Cox would be a nice pick up. Powers from Indy would be no worse than Cason. Some are even talking about Chung coming in at safety from New England. As for ILB maybe Ellerbe from the Ravens, provided Mouton does not shock us all!.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭OAOB

We'll have to pay LeVitre more than Vasquez but he's a better player and better fit for us, problem is he's in demand, Titans are favourites i hear. We still haven't made an offer to Vasquez so i half think we might wait and see what he's offered in FA and then better it.
I think we need to get 2 veteran bodies on the line with Hardwick and then 2rookies. I'd love to see us aggressively target Winston and LeVitre but we haven't the cap space to get both i don't think.

One verteran CB is needed and draft another to go with Gilchrist and Wright. Chung was beaten out of the SS position by Gregory last year which is a real worry but he has upside so i'd be happy to try get him although i still think Taylor will come good for us.

Ellerbe would be a great pick up but i can't see the Ravens not re-signing him, he's a fantastic player. Come on Mouton

Chung belongs no where near any NFL team.

We have decent cap space, we could easily sing two Oline and a corner.
Good to hear Winston visited over the weekend.
We could pay decent guys like Levitre up front this year because we have I think between 25-30M cap space next year.

Bills released Fitzpatrick, they have got to be going with Barkley, the more QBs the better.

@AdamSchefter Chargers trying to get done a deal with Cowboys free-agent TE John Phillips.

@RapSheet CB Jerraud Powers is heading to Arizona to visit the Cardinals. Then San Diego.

I like Fitzpatrick but this is a good move for us. Levitre heading to titans, we won't not even get to talk to him

Signed up, around 8m a year.

    Vasquez to the broncos apparently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭OAOB

Thought Vasquez would get 6m/year for 4year deal, he went for slightly cheaper. Kind of feel that maybe we could have afforded him but he really suits the Broncos

Looks like a real youth movement this year which I like to see. The John Phillips / McMichael switch I think is a microcosm of what we can expect this offseason. We'll get to see plenty of Troutman, Taylor et al next season methinks. I think we can sit back and wait for a couple of weeks and then get a few good value FAs

Good point and they're even saying Mouton might play now.

I'm just worried about the O-line, Rivers has been bashed too much the last 2years, would have liked to get some quality experience protecting him but it looks like we'll have to settle for lesser name signings this year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,274 ✭✭✭Justin10

Well first signing of Oline King Dunlap from the Eagles.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,256 ✭✭✭Molly

Happy with that signing, an upgrade over clary and can play LT as well. Will be interesting to see what happens with Clary. Some folk think he projects better as a guard.

Gaither/Warmack/Harwick/Clary/Dunlop could be cool. Wonder will we see some movement on the gaither front.

The more this goes on the more I think Gaithar is staying. If Fisher is there, or maybe Johnson then we take either and release Gaithar. If they aint there we take a guard and keep him.

Don't know much about Dunlap, i presume it'll be a camp battle between him and Clary and Dunlap being favourite as he's been brought in by the new regime. I also guess this means Winston decided SD wasn't for him.

I hate the idea of keeping Gaither, he burned us last year and no reason to suspect he won't do it again. He's not liked by players in the locker room and i think we should just cut our losses at this stage.

Guard position is getting interesting, so far we only have Troutman Schilling and Dombrowski to pick from. We could try move Clary inside or also use Molk as a G(which i like the idea of). Either way it's looking like it will be a patched together line currently with only one guaranteed starter on the roster currently.

Positives are it looks like Raiders and Bills need a QB so i reckon that will be Smith and Barkley off the board before we pick. We really need Johnson at no.11

I really like Troutman, I think he starts, if we sign Powers today it probably will be Oline in the 1st and 2nd round

Ye QB situation is looking good, Cards too could be talked into taking a QB, here is to all QBs having amazing Pro Days :D

Mad 1st day of FA (outside of SD mainly).

Dunlap is an upgrade on Clary at RT but he won't cut it at LT for me. Like many have said provided Clary takes a pay cut he might stick around as a Guard, backup RT. If Gaither comes back and gives some effort then yes we go Guard at #11. I'd like to see Cox come in at corner. Looks like we didn't have all that much interest in Vasquez. Guess that signals a change in O line philosophy to ZBS. Dombo might actually be a half decent Guard given the chance. If we were to go Gaither, Warmack, Nick, Dombo and Dunlap F me our O line would be huge. Or Troutman for Dombo.

What about Dansby from Miami? if he comes in for decent value Mouton can sit a bit more. Some teams really overpaid, I'm looking at you Miami, what a joke Jeff Ireland is.

I've been trying to get my head around this ZBS lately and it seems to me that mobile linemen are important in it but we seem to be getting more power blocking linemen. Gaither would suit the scheme but i don't want him there, for a 500,000 cap hit maybe it's worth keeping him and seeing what he can do or at least as an insurance in case we can't get a T in the draft. Cooper would suit zone better than Warmack but not much in between them.

Very quiet FA by us so far but now that the initial rush is over the value players can be found, this is the point where good GMs operate. And in fairness i thought we had a great FA last year and they all turned out disappointing so no point getting excited or depressed just yet. We have so many holes we're bound to fill one or two soon.

Not a guy who's name i recognise but i like the signing of Rinehart, experience with coaches and was ranked as third best G in pass protection in 2011 so has potential to be good.

Im so high on Troutman, have not been as confident in a player since Donald Butler. I think he can be pro bowl level. :)

Four or five signings already and I would guess probably another 2-3.
Be interesting to see what happens at corner.
