The best thing about the Simota is that it is enclosed in a heat shield like a stock air box. The guy who helps me with the big jobs on my car at work thought I had put a backbox on my car when he heard it, he didn't know I had put it on and used that word 'rasp' :)

If I was heading to the meet it'd be dead handy and you'd know at least. I'd say hold off a while for a week or so, research the **** out of it (a golf gti is as common as an Astra Sri ) and theres loads of discussion on it surely

I gave up paying for pre-made intake stuff, you can make your own far cheaper and if done right will custom fit exactly your can and outperform these type of units. The OEM Airbox (in anything performance orientated) will have been pressure wave harmonically balanced in its dimensions and have a specific intake length to manipulate air waves bouncing back and forth from the intake as it closes. This is known as Helmholz resonance (and the plastic flange things in OEM intakes are Helmholz resonators).

Simota and [most] other expensive branded induction kits do not have this type of design as even ones sold as "for X car" are made up from a core set of mass produced components. Therefore the first step for performance modification would be to increase airflow without changing a carefully designed intake system (unless you have something really old or basic which doesnt have a good stock intake system). This is where a drop in Panel filter comes in.

My own preference, given I cannot realistically calculate air pressure waves and intake tract length for a given engine would be the more "American" approach: RAM Air induction. The principle here would be to increase airpressure in the airbox so much you actual have a slight net positive pressure (obviously only at speed). You generally will need some pretty well placed Velocity Stacks (trumpets) on a short pipe and a totally sealed airbox to actually achieve this and a high flow airfilter.
    2uidtfd.jpg
The logic being the engine no longer has to "suck" in air, when it gasps for air its pushed through.

On the plus side, way cheaper and better than the vast majority of commercial bolt on induction kits.

A high flow sports cat should solve the issue.
It gives a better sound and performance but will pass the nct.
I've got a 100 cell mongoose one in the ST and it flew through the emissions test.
The cat should be a simple enough job to swap, on mine its 4 bolts and a lambda sensor that need to be removed / replaced.

For now I would simply get a good performance panel filter and ensure the Air box is fully sealed and air tight. Check the intake side of the airbox and ensure there is nothing blocking flow etc too.
See how that goes before planning something more custom or expensive.

On a serious note, anybody recommend a good way of getting stone and tar off my exhaust? I don't want to resort to thinners or the like... It's annoying me to see it covered in that crap

    Any cleaning agents to recomend?

If I were you id try coke (the bottled variety) and tinfoil. Put the coke on the exhaust and scrub with the thin foil.

I made my own one up for my van, I'll host the link when I'm at a pc.... But to say the least was far cheaper and far better than the crappy kits available for the cars from known brands!

Can I get a different brand sports cat if i decide to do that in the future?

This is the panel for you then:
    http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?prod=33-2888

Here are there other stuff, ie induction kits:
    http://www.knfilters.com/search/appsearch.aspx?type=auto&year=2007&make=VOLKSWAGEN&model=Golf+V+GTI&engine=2.0L

Would look to the cheaper panel filter myself though.

Wouldn't be bothered with a k&n induction kit, the Forge kits are better. Or try a VW racing kit, your local VW garage should be able to price one. I know Sheehys in Naas will anyhow.
