jesus he'll be gutted about that, massive blow

just curious, but if he was seeded how the hell did he end up meeting the Turk so soon?

Not sure, there must have been no seeding.

A couple of people questioning the scoring after the fight. Not a whole lot new there!

    That's a massive disappointment

any news on when con sheehan is up,he is also fighting a turk!

I would say the Super HWs would be on last.

Looks like Ireland are debating whether or not to appeal the scoring.
    Interview with Billy Walsh http://soundcloud.com/paul-mcdermott-isc/billy-walsh-after-joe-ward

Probably a waste of time given that the event is in Turkey, although Lomachenko did get a result overturned at the worlds' last year IIRC.

Kazakhstan done quite well hosting the asian qualifier as well! Would not like to be boxing a Turk.

It also brings the question of why a lot of events are being staged in the same countries:

    • Turkey
    European Championships 2011
    Olympic Qualifier 2012
    • Kazakhstan
    World Champs 2013
    World Junior 2011
    • Azerbaijan
    World Champs 2011
    World Youths 2010

Seems strange that these 3 countries tend to get a lot of evets and then there was the BBC accusation that Azerbaijan was attempting to pay money for golds in London.

I am not saying this is conclusive evidence but for an organisation that has a transparency issues, their propensity to have oil rich central asian states hosting events is puzzling.

i agree completely with you, like other countries obviously bid to get those competitions i would like to see the reasoning on why they dont get it

Billy Walsh seems like a fair-minded man, so there must be some dodgy scoring involved. It's sickening to think of someone being screwed over like this, after all the sacrifices they've made to get to this point.

If Barnes, Nolan or DOJ meet a Turk they'll already have qualified.

  • Registered Users Posts: 338 ✭✭the_real_lamp

Joyce wins 22-14 against Youth Olympic Gold Medalist Artur Bril (Ger) (7-6, 8-4, 7-4)

  • Registered Users Posts: 215 ✭✭Craptacular

Joyce's next opponent is Petrauskas of Lithuania. The winner goes to London.

    good for joyce good luck

  • Registered Users Posts: 338 ✭✭the_real_lamp

Barnes wins after standing count in second round. Was 4-2 down after first.
Will box Caslarov (Rou) for place in Olympics.

Anyway. Here's the road to London for the 4 left. All in Action today

Barnes (49kg) fights a Romanian today. If he wins. He's in.
Joyce fights a Lithuanian. If he wins. He's in. (Still 2 Brits in this too)
Nolan fight a lad from Azerbaijan. if he wins, he fights the winner of Albania/Romania for a place in the Olympics.
Mccarthy has the hardest task. He still need to win the tournament. His path is

    1 v Hungary
    2 v Turkey/Moldova
    3 v Croatia/Estonia/England/Bulgria

"Negotiations are understood to be continuing in the case of light-heavyweight Joe Ward, who was controversially beaten two days ago.

There are rumours that Ward could receive a wildcard as the Irish Amateur Boxing Association and the Olympic Council of Ireland continue to press for a reprieve.
    "

Although I would love to see Ward get thru, what is the controversy? Was it a blatant robbery? I mean, it's well known that if a fight is in anyway close, either man can get it, and a home fighter usually does. The officials/scores have been checked out and all is above board, is it not?
