hi all, heading over with my girlfriend in june............to be honest i love the sound of saskatoon being from tipperary.......... iv a degree in law and a masters in business however have just a couple of years experience........... my girlfriend is a city girl and works in h.r. although she is happy to go along with whatever I feel is right however this brings added pressure. it appears that having a trade in sk is the golden ticket but surely with lots of construction comes banking, business related and h.r. jobs? if anyone could shed any light on this id really appreciate it. thanks in advance :-)

Lived in Saskatchewan before, very cold in winter and Regina and Saskatoon has a very high crime rate, having said that the people were lovely and i enjoyed living there.
The only city in Sk that has a hostel is Regina and quiet a nice hostel at that, if you go there its cheap and you should get a place to rent in no time, i was only there 2 days and found myself a house.
There is a great Irish pub there called O Hanlons in Victoria square also.
Food and the cost of living is actually cheaper in Sk than the rest of Canada, people told me that was because its in the middle of the country and all the trucks have to travel through it.

Is there many Irish in Regina?

I've only started looking into moving to Canada from Ireland and would be very interested in getting information from people who have already moved over there.

What area you have moved to and how you are finding it?

Also can you advise me of the best process of applying for a visa, looking and applying for jobs and looking for places to live. There seams to be a lot of construction jobs but is there many other jobs over there?

    Thanks

Depends whats your skill set? if you have a skill that's in demand you will have no problem finding work. if you don't you will still find work but at a low pay. read over this forum every answer you need is here:)

There aren't a huge amount of jobs in Toronto I believe. People are better off looking elsewhere unless they've got some kind of specialist, marketable skills

My name is Richard.Im from tipperary.I lived in Vancouver for the last 2 years.I have my residency.Just back in Ireland for a short while and heading back too Canada soon but not to Van.Nice place but way too expensive. Was looking into saskatoon.Im in construction myself.Im a plasterer and from what i see theres a few jobs in veneer plastering there which we call skim coating back home.It just seems to be all tape and jointing elsewhere in Canada.Just wondering whats it like to live there, cost of accomodation in general. Is there much Irish in the city.Is construction busy there and easy to get work.Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Richard

    Hi Declan,

Im a welder / fabricator by trade and have been working in the security industry for the last few years due to the collapse of the construction trade. But even now work of any kind is hard to get.

Are the trades still open on canada? What are the main trades employers are looking for?

I was at the working abroad expo in rds earlier in year and got to final 12 for a job in skats but didnt make final cut of 8.

    Any advice would be great.
