Looks like the tanker has been in close quarters situations a few times before, look at the plating!

Antarctic whale research (JARPAII) mother ship Nisshin Maru (NM) and her supply
tanker were again subject to sabotage by the Sea Shepherd (SS) ships Steve Irwin (SI),
Bob Barker (BB) and Sam Simon (SmS). The SI and BB are sailing under the flag of

Reckless behaviour and dangerous to safe navigation I've nothing against whales or men trying to live of the sea.

you'd think at this point it can't be too much longer until the Japanese deploy a navy ship down there to sort them out

Paints a thousand words but leaves out millions.

All potential Sea sheep pay attention, pretty soon one of the SS boats will be holed during one of their illegal blockades.
    This is what they want.
In an abandonment situation there is a big chance of loss of life.
They would love to lose crew it would mean huge publicity for their 'cause'
Don't end up a statistic, avoid these clowns at all costs.

I doubt they were flanked by the other 2. So what are the millions being left out? It's nothing but carelessness and reckless abandon. They have no consideration for their own welfare, nor that of the people on the other boats.

Disagree all you want, but don't go about putting peoples lives at risk and expect to be excused of it.

There is also the possibility of the SS vessels colliding with the tanker and rupturing the plating thereby causing a massive oil spill in one of the most environmentally sensitive areas on the globe.

But as long as they get their photos on the front pages...

If you see the video you'll see they were along side the sun laurel and the MM came up along side them and turned into them.

Either way its going to end on carnage and the Ozzie navy should be there to prevent illegal poaching of whales in there water or as independent observers.

And precisely there is where any subsequent defence is completely invalided. Completely.

There have been rumours of the Aussies finally joining in instead of ignoring the situation but I am sure they dont want ot upset the japanese either. Sea shepard have always said they are an action group not just a protest group so if you join on board you kinda know what your getting in to. From what I have seen from the programmes something like this would have been agreed by the crew not just the captain. SS are not just wearing T shirts, they are actually stopping the Japanese taking whales for "reasearch" purposes. Kudos.

Cookie monster the Japanese cant deploy their Navy down there as its Austrialian waters they shouldn't even be whaling there anyway. Antarctica is meant to be a conservation zone but as long as they hunt then for reasearch its ok.

Westbest I have nothing againest people who live from the sea. I make most of my income from it. But if what you do is putting different species at risk I do care. This is the same culture that hunts dolphins for captivity and meat. Even though we know they are self aware and now call each other by name. I have no isssue killing an animal for food once its done sustainably and yes some animals are more equal than others.

why would that matter? All they have to do is arrange it with the whaling fleet to rendezvous in international waters just outside any territorial waters. If they are whaling in Aussie water without consequence anyway it seems they'd have little issue respecting borders

They don't have a Navy, rather they have what is called the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force which presently are needed closer to home in more pressing disputes with China, Russia and Korea. AFAIK they would need approval from parliament to send a ship anyway.

Military ship joins whaling fleet: Sea Shepherd
Japan has sent a giant military icebreaker to bolster its whaling fleet in the conflict with Sea Shepherd in the Southern Ocian, anti-whaling activists say.

The 12,500 tonne Shirase, operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force, has appeared near whalers and Sea Shepherd, the group said.

It's an ice breaker not an armed Navel Ship do by the time it reaches there it will be a battleship when Sea Shepherd spins it to the World Media.

At least an icebreaker with an reinforced steel bow,can cause some serious damage if sea Shepard and co decides to go head to head with it.

Their supporters call them heroes. The Japanese government calls them terrorists.

Now the United States' largest federal court has declared them pirates.

    According to a Japanese minister:

"Japan is an island nation surrounded by the sea, so taking some good protein from the ocean is very important. For food security I think it's very important," he told AFP.

But they claim that they only kill Whales for 'research' & they have warehouses full of unwanted Whale meat.

The increasing involvement by Australia & the decision of the US court, suggests that the Sea Shepherds will 'move' to Australia. It may only be a matter of time before the Australian navy become involved.

“You don’t need a peg leg or an eye patch. When you ram ships; hurl glass containers of acid; drag metal-reinforced ropes in the water to damage propellers and rudders; launch smoke bombs and flares with hooks; and point high-powered lasers at other ships, you are, without a doubt, a pirate, no matter how high-minded you believe your purpose to be,” said Chief Judge Alex Kozinski.

    Couldn't be clearer.

As i can see it,the Japanesere have done nothing wrong, but to try and bunker the whaling boats in Australian waters.
But what is wrong according to international law is to try and stop this,as Sea shepards and co are doing at the moment.
So if the Australian navy is to get involved, and they are to follow international laws,I think the Sea Shepard and co will be the one that will be hauled in.:D

At the end of the day, regardless of what the Japanese think or American judges, millions of ordinary people oppose whaling. If, for example, crew members were imprisoned or even killed there are plenty who would take their place. If a Sea Shepherd vessel is lost then a new one will quickly replace it.

And that makes it even more worrying:eek:

If Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society really wanted to end whaling, all he would have to do is to find the whaling ships and follow the whalers in boats fitted with underwater acoustic equipment much like the LRAD system the Japanese whalers have used. This would frighten the whales away and keep them away from the whaling ships. Something on the order an ultrasonic dog repellant device. With the physics of sound waves traveling through water, there would not be whale within 10 miles of a whaling boat, but that would negate having to engage in direct contact with the enemy that makes for great fundraising stories i.e. there is no money in that plan. It would also allow for utilizing much smaller boats to thwart the whaler's efforts. No sea captain wants to downsize their boat and with Paul Watson's ego built up on being an outlaw rebel pirate, no reduction in boat length is going to happen. Of course if money is the primary concern over their actions attempting to save whales, there is no reason to adopt this battle plan.
