Yes, and that is exactly the problem. You have just shown why Irish Democracy is a farce.
In Ireland, people vote like this (in this order):

    1. Whatever party their family votes for.
    2. Who they think is going to win. (everyone likes to back a winner)
    3. Who fixes the most pot holes

Consider that Ireland is a one party state (FF/FG), and you begin to realise the whole process is a sham.
(For the last general election, I read vast chunks of the various manifestos and then spoiled my vote)

You're not really in a position to lament it when you've already admitted that you're part of the problem.

Why would he sign something that has legal standing knowing that there is a referendum pending on the issue?

    Thats a very good question!
    Thats honestly my point.

Part from what I have studied (personal, tort, business and contract law) and part from common sense.

I'm not arguing with yourself in particular dvpower or what you say.
I just have questions and see somethings right away from contractual basis. :)

Just wait until the Germans & French get their hands on Irelands economic lifelines...

Tax harmonization right across the board and after that, goodbye Ireland...the only thing you were ever any good to these people was your low tax levels....without them, why would anyone possibly stay here? They'll be gone before you can say "Don't go jobs...."

This could further turn the whole process into a right legal mess thats allI would suggest the best course of action is that he sign nothing till the public's wishes has become clear and he THEN has a clear mandate.

All the countries sign up to these things. All the signature means is the intention to become bound by the terms of the treaty when ratification has taken place. Each country ratifies in it's own way. Countries sign up to things all the time, especially at UN level. Non-proliferation treaties, treaties banning cluster bombs etc etc, but signing up to them effectively doesn't mean squat until the signature has been ratified. No legal mess, at the end of the day all countries recognise that the signature is that of one man, and has no legal effect until the ratification process has been completed.

From Davys (lifted from another thread)
    • Ireland has little choice but to adopt the treaty given that ratification is a pre-condition for securing future ESM funding.

I'll be proudly voting yes. There is no alternative plan better than the current one to attempt to save Ireland from becoming a completely failed bankrupt state. It's a painful few years we're in for, but it is the best way to get ourselves back on our feet.

Basically this is what everyone wanted, a referendum on the bailout.

Vote yes, keep getting ESM funding and be required to not have a deficit in future.
Vote no and stop getting funding.

Given how people gave out about how politicians were able to run up such a massive deficit surely having a limit on it in future is desirable?

We don't need any money, we'll live within our means. As soon as you borrow, you've thrown yourself to the wolves.

    gotta love referendums.

if you Vote YES, the German Finance minister will cut old age pensions, increase the price of nappies, make everyone do 6 months admin work for the French government, and the EU-IMF-ECB will sack all civil servants born on an even date.

if you Vote NO, the EU will cut all ties with Ireland forever, may or may not (WINK) put sanctions on our exports, American private companies will leave behind their billion dollar headquarters and move jobs abroad, and we'll fall into a socialist-anarchist Mad Max society within a month.

So it's just me who's going to be laughing all the way to the ballot box with my no vote.

If I tick the X for no and also add in a few long paragraphs of abuse does my vote still count as a no?

So you don't approve of being fiscally responsible?

    (I'm starting campaigning early).

    PR fodder for the masses.

    spoil vote?

how about adding a second question on the ballot paper

    leave the eurozone?

My thoughts would be they should be asked to add a second question

" Should we continue to pay the bondholders of Anglo etc."

If that request was refused we could attempt to have another referendum.
To call a referendum we would need 155,000 signatures, could Boardsie members organise enough people to stand outside polling stations to collect signatures for a bondholder referendum?.
Would be priceless to see the politicians squirming.

Closing our deficit by borrowing more money that we need to pay back interest on? Seriously, there is a serious lack of mathematical ability in this country, no wonder we're slipping down the international ranks.

The outcome of this vote depends on our Govts ability to explain the fcuking thing in laymans terms.

They bamboozle the public with a load of supercalafragalisticexpeealydosis words, and its game over.

Explain the friggin thing so as I can make up my mind, and fully understand what it is I'm voting for, and you'll get the vote it deserves.
