UTV speed issues - North Dublin

(Starting a new thread on this as I saw it mentioned in the UTV cap thread, feel free to merge if appropriate).

Over Christmas my broadband was largely unusable, with the connection dropping every few minutes and crawling along pitifully even when functioning. I swapped routers, bought a new phone cable, nothing worked; though it says something that this was less hassle than actually trying to resolve the issue via customer support.

Fortunately, the issue suddenly appeared to resolve itself and I've been getting more or less what I pay for (3mb Clicksilver) since. However, today the issue is back with a vengeance and my connection is essentially worthless. I'd post up a Speedtest screenshot, but, tragi-comically enough, it won't load for me.

I gather from the cap thread that others have been having the same problem? Is it just North Dublin? Anyone get a response?

I'm in North Tipp and my case is a replica of yours. I even bought a new router thinking the problem was at my end but that just kept dropping connection too around the Chrimbo. I rang "technical support" who told me my line was fine and that I should move my router to a different phone socket (eventhough it had been working perfectly at that socket all along...sh*t advice). Anyway, same as you again the speeds tonight are crawling along at 1mb and I'm on an 8mb NGB package.

my speed is also at about 1meg for an 8meg package...kinda glad in a way to know i'm not the only one suffering from this.

i can't get onto speedtest for the last while either, although i could earlier on, and the max speed i've gotten all evening is 1.25mb which is an absolute joke!

think i'll ring them tomorrow if it doesn't get sorted.

EDIT: finally got onto speedtest just there, and this is the result...pathetic!

have a friend on eircom who is also only getting speeds of about 0.5mb...so may be a bigger problem!

Missus complaining of really slow internet. Also with UTV. Away from home so can't check for sure....

This problem must be an internal issue in UTV s network keep ringing them till they fix it tell them if they don't fix it your going to cancel tbh those speeds are patethic for DSL.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 569 ✭✭✭spongerobinson

its been much better since shortly after midnight last night...still seems to be contention issues at busy times, but must've been a temporary fault yesterday evening that had it so slow.

Is it fine for everyone else now? As posted above, my connection was more or less back to normal this (Wednesday) morning, but creeping along again by this evening. As of now, it's somewhat better, but far from optimal:

UTV saying no problem their end, possible problem on exchange etc as usual.

    Wired or Wireless?
    What package are you on?
What are the stats from your modem [SNR, Sync Speed etc]?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 569 ✭✭✭spongerobinson

mine not great again this evening...its usable but not as fast as it should be.

Wireless but very close proximity to router, and am on UTV 8MB NGB. Here are the stats from the modem...i'm not quite sure what they mean!

    Downstream Upstream
    Data rate (Kbps)
    8160 512
    Noise margin (dB)
    12.2 25.0
    Output power (dBm)
    19.8 12.2
    Attenuation (dB)
    21.0 10.5

    Wireless but very close proximity

Doesn't matter. Can you do a speed test, wired, please? It can make a HUGE difference.

Im on a 24MB NGB PC is wired directly yo router

    Bloody frustrating

pretty good at the moment, but who wants to wait til 12.30 at night for a good speed, especially when it is supposedly NGB!

NGB me arse. It does seem like there's some serious congestion during "waking hours". Here's mine now that everyone else around my street is probably gone to the land of nod.

Might I make a suggestion that along with posting speed tests also post router line stats.

As another poster said the test should be performed over wire for the most accurate result.

Also with UTV and quite bad connection speed... Can anyone affected please complain and log a ticket. especially if you are on NGB, I mean surely they can't advertised uncontended speeds when its not a reality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 569 ✭✭✭spongerobinson

complaint made from me this morning. was asked to email the records i'd been keeping of speed to them. will be interesting to see what happens, if anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,265 ✭✭✭RangeR

Speedtests over wireless are useless. Proximity is not the only factor. Just because you are getting great speeds at night and ****e speeds during the day could be down to the fact that there are other WIFI AP's on during the day rather than at night.

My WIFI turns to ****e at predictable times nearly every day. As soon as people come home from work, they turn on their WIFI. Bang. my "internet" turns to crap. Not everyone leaves their WIFI AP's on 24x7 so wifi issues are hard to diagnose properly without taking a lot of variables into account. Apart from proximity, there is other wifi interference, structural interference, channel interference, microwave, to name but a few.

You really need to test wired.

=== You can stop reading here if you don't want a liccle anicdote. ===

A fried of mine ran riot to UPC a few months ago. He was CONVINCED that ht was only getting 20%, consistently, of his bandwidth. He even had UPC engineers out 2 or 3 times to his house. Each time, no fault was found. After a month or two, he told me of the problem.

I asked him "Wired or Wireless?"

He said "Wired. I brought my home plug into the kitchen, bedroom, living room." The speed is always ****e.

I slapped him. He wasted months and 3 engies time over his own assumption that Homeplugs where a wired solution.

He tested without the Homeplugs and saw he was getting 98% full speed consistently.

thanks for your reply RangeR; i only got to try with a direct connection now.

i had replied thinking with a direct wired connection the results were better, but further testing a few minutes later has resulted in this:

    WIRED:
    1809118605.png

    WIRELESS:
    1809128281.png

bare in mind there was a few minutes between each test so this is probably why the speed was actually higher over wireless. so it doesn't seem to be related to a poor wireless signal from what i can see. I'll try it again if it gets really slow this evening, and see what happens.

have still heard nothing back from ISP, so might just stop stressing myself over it for now, and see what they come up with in time!

Still happening here. It seems to drop in speed after 6pm.

From tests I've been running it seems that they're throttling speeds between 6pm-12am.

Doubt it's throttling. More likely peak traffic. All the kids, all the parents, all students logging on to check facebook. Hate facebook.

NGB is only uncongested/uncontended to the exchange... whatever lies behind that would appear to be the problem.

Keep up the pressure. I will be moving from UTV this month if its sh1t when I get home from travle.s

But if this is the case then why does it work fine for months and then all of a sudden it turns to ****e for a lot of people in various geographical locations?

Anyone else's speeds fallen off a cliff today after a week or so of functioning normally?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 Leeman79

This is my 17MB line (on 24mbNGB but 17 is what I get , well supposed to)

    1825809921.png

Took me over 10 minutes to fully buffer a 3 minute youtube clip!!

This is BS and I will be leaving UTV after 5 years
Probably gonna switch to Vodafone as UPC is not available in my area

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 518 ✭✭✭nacimroc

I've had enough! Been trying to download a 5gb file since this morning! Piss poor service. So Monday I'm telling them I'm not going paying for the last months service as they are nowhere near providing what they are charging for!

Going to get onto Comreg aswell as UTV are just ripping people off now! Other people I know not with UTV have no trouble.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 466 ✭✭zoom_cool

Still crap logged a call heard nothing back will be leaving UTV as well

I always get fobbed off by their tech support so I really hate contacting them at all. But this is gone beyond bad service. Here's my latest result from a few minutes ago (8mb NGB)

So it appears a few of us are ready to jump ship. Who's going with who? I'm undecided. No UPC in my area so that's a non-starter. I don't want to go with Eircom so what are the pluses and minuses of the rest?

I'm in the same boat. A friend went with Vodafone and likes them so might try them. They have a "limited" cap of 350GB (ass opposed to UTV's unlimited of 75GB :D)

Don't know if there are too many alternatives to be honest. I would try imagine for the wimax only the pings are so high I couldn't play online games.

I was just having a gander on the Vodafone website actually when I got the notification of your reply. It must be a sign

I find my speeds are also bad also in the evenings. Last week, think it was Wednesday my internet service was gone for the whole day. I'm on the 8mb package and might only get 0.5mb from 6-8pm and then back to normal. Also even when I'm getting 7mb+ YouTube and other video services can be dog slow but can download a file at full speed.

75GB cap? I pay for unlimited and I go way over that without any issues. Anyone get a warning for going over it?

I've read the fair usage policy and all it says is to switch off any p2p software at peak times. If you don't and are causing congestion, they will let you know. After the second warning they say they'll throttle you at peak times from then on. So they don't throttle unless you are warned a few times.

If it wasn't for some of the horror stories I've heard about Vodafone I'd consider moving. The thread over Vodafone also doesn't inspire confidence. The 12 month contract is the killer as it's better the devil you know. The last time I looked at their packages, they were very attractive offering xboxlive membership, excellent cap, etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 676 ✭✭✭O'Prez

It does seem like there is some kind of throttling going on because it's usually during specific hours that it goes to almost dial up speeds and then returns to normal. But with that said I don't use P2P and never reach 75GB a month. Anyway I'll ring em on Monday for all the good that'll do me.

Can I ask where did people get 75GB?
There is no mention of it in the FUP at all. Just the P2P at peak times.

I got an email from them stating it after they sent me an email saying I was nearing my cap. I did not recieve the reply until 4 WEEKS after I sent it!!
It does only seem to be stated on the NGB sales page

    http://www.utvinternet.com/broadband/ngb.aspx

3 Usage limits apply to all tariffs. Usage includes all information downloaded over your connection, as well as all information uploaded. Over usage is charged at €2.00 per GB. There is a Fair Usage Policy of 75 GB applicable to customers who are on unlimited usage. Terms and Conditions apply.

Whereas on the normal sales page there is no mention of a cap on the unlimited packages

    http://www.utvinternet.com/broadband/

3 Download limits apply to all tariffs, with a Fair Usage Policy applicable to customers who are on unlimited usage. Terms and Conditions apply

With all this BS and the SERIOUS speed issues Think its time to see whether the grass is greener on the other side

Think they changed their T&C in mid-December which is when they sneakily changed it I think! You were probably like me and checked when you signed up to the 12 month contract, without knowing they would move the goal posts on us half way through the contract we agreed to!

Ya, its only the NGB one thats limited to the ridiculous limit afaik!

    Don't have NGB so I'm fine I say :)

If they do change it I will definitely move, probably to Vodafone. 75GB is fcuking ridiculous this day and age with all the catchup services and Netflix. Vodafone's 350GB is fantastic but I say their network probably suffers from it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,323 ✭✭✭jay93

So the max on NGB with UTV is 75GB that's not great at all,

Eircom offer you 250GB with no over usage charges.
Vodafone's cap of 300GB isn't bad at all aswell UTV seem to be ripping people off.

Vodafone's and Eircom networks don't suffer at all from having such high download caps giving how slow UTV have been this past couple of weeks i'm not sure if their network could even handle people on a higher allowance of 75GB.

Same here again. Unacceptable to say the least. Does Vodafone block any sites like Eircom does? Also, what are the upload speeds like with Vodafone?
