Even reviewers seem to miss it and say "Ohh the GS4 has way more camera features"

HTC really need to bring them to the forefront instead of hiding them in editing options !

So now the suggestion is that on a beach, the wind is going to... what? Drive sand into the bag? Into my pockets? There'll be a sandstorm tornado in my trousers, and at the end of the day I'll pull out a phone with a sandblasted screen? The phone is going to get eroded like the cliffs at killiney because I'm going to leave it out overnight?

But wait! A very thin flexible piece of plastic *can't* get scratched because it's invulnerable!

It's pretty simple. Take reasonable care and your posessions are unlikely to get wrecked.

The thin piece of plastic will get scratched, unless its one of the more expensive ones, your screen wont.

You are being deliberately facetious, there are numerous reports of GG screens getting scratched and people have no idea how, any small bits of debris like sand particles or other stuff in your pockets can scratch your screen. For the sake of 50c or whatever it is for a cheap screen cover i dont know why you wouldnt to be honest.

Haha as much as im enjoying your OT argument, there are definately use cases for screen protectors.

During last summer I worked a dirty/outdoors job so a screen protector was a must and took a lot of scratches that could have tainted my GG.

Whenever I was finished up for the weekend tho the protector came of as it was horrible to use and took away from the excellence of the screen on the One X.

After 12 months with the phone the last 7 without a screen protector but a flip case I have a solitary scratch around the touch buttons that is very hard to see.

So yeh there are use cases for screen protectors but in normal/carefull use they aren't needed.

Still can't see the point to Zoe besides taking up a lot of your storage. And I'll never get those 21 minutes of my life back. Yawn.

I didn't watch the video, but Zoe is great. I've caught pics of my kids I would seriously struggle to with another phone.

Can someone answer me this please. If I buy the One from the o2 store online, will it come unlocked to any network?

Id say most of them from the networks are locked at this stage, you can unlock it on ebay for around 4e though.

Just wondering with all the controversy over the 16gb S4 only having 8.49gb available out of the box due to the system taking the rest how much does the HTC One have out of its 32gb. I've been using mine for a few weeks so I'm not sure how to get an out of the box figure. Would I be right in presuming onboard ram flash would be faster than a class 10 microsd?

    About 25gb I believe

On board memory will always be faster, but I don't think it's a huge difference. I guess you just don't have to worry about what to put where

Is it possible to get the phone to default to the home screen when you unlock it instead of the last used screen/app?

If you're rooted with unlocked bootloader, why do you want to take the OTA? Why not just flash a ROM based on latest firmware?

    Not everyone roots for ROMs.

    I didnt root because of ROM-s ...
just wanted root on stock vodafone for now.

Understandably you don't have to flash a custom ROM. There are only positives to flashing a custom ROM....no negatives that I'm aware of. Sticking with stock ROMs offers no real positives.

I heard somewhere that rooting the phone deletes a couple of apps (calculator etc) which means that OTA updates won't work anymore.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭rovoagho

You can reinstall the apps, search for calculator.apk on XDA-Developers. If you've installed another recovery you'll need to flash stock too.

someone here wrote that managed to return to stock and update with newest OTA that is why I was asking about it...

so isnt possible to update with new vodafone ota if I rooted phone and change recovery ?

has anyone who updated to new OTA noticed any improvements ?
because if there is nothing I can do , it looks I will need to flash some ROM , I didnt want to go that route because I dont know how mature are those ROM-s anyway

You have to realise that returning to stock and updating via Vodafone OTA will almost always put you still behind where the latest ROM is in the development community. The only reason the likes of vodafone are always behind is because they will add their own stuff to it and do internal testing.

9 times out of 10, custom ROMs will be a later revision of what is currently available via OTA in Ireland, they will be just as stable, and without any bloatware.

Of course, if you want to experiment with beta ROMs, there is often stuff like that coming up. For example, one of the devs is currently working on a port of an Android 4.2.2 rom with sense 5.1.

well I understand that , just I was thinking there is no stable custom ROM-s , if you can anything you can recommend , I will take a look because I am anyway fed up with vodafone bloatware ..

ARHD if you want something as close to stock as possible without the bloatware. TrickDroid if you want loads of extra goodies with the rom. Everything else is somewhere between the two.

Errr what? Even big name projects like cyanogen have released *supported* roms with notes like "no/buggy camera function". Custom rom's offer a lot of benefits but suggesting there are no downsides, no performance problems, no loss of device-specific functions, no new bugs etc is naieve in the extreme.

I flashed lots of roms recently, including "stripped down" ones and ended up going back to stock because it was faster to boot or more responsive, or more reliable. Rooting a stock Rom to remove bloatware is a perfectly logical thing to do.

Again flashing a rom like ARHD, is just a stock HTC Rom with bloat stripped away and optionel enhancements so its incredible stable. Viper as well as Cyanogen beta's will obviously be a bit unstable as the phone it still fairly new.

Maybe I should clarify myself. I was only referring to Sense based ROM's. They are all based on released firmware and are rock solid. Any bugs they have will also be present in stock ROMs, and on top of that there will be certain improvements over stock ROMs. So yes, I stand by my statement that there are no downsides to flashing these ROMs.

At the end of the day, it comes down to a bit of common sense and educating yourself. I've been flashing ROMs since before Android existed, and it's not exactly rocket science to identify that an alpha/beta ROM is going to have some bugs.

There's no Viper for the One. The wheels are in motion, and hopefully it will be soon. I used it as my daily driver on the One X, and it as rock solid, with great battery life. I was also a beta tester, and very rarely did we come across any bugs.

Can't really comment on Cyanogen, haven't really used it since I had my sensation. Was very buggy on One X, S3 and Note 2 when I owned them.

Will hopefully have my One later today and planning on rooting and flashing trickdroid on it immediately.

Quick question however. Do I need to install the latest OTA update before unlocking the bootloader etc. or can I just proceed without it?

Also am I right in assuming that this is general steps that should be followed:
    1. Run OTA update
    2. Unlock Bootloader
    3. Temp boot Custom Recovery and create Nandroid Backup (just so I have the original ROM available)
    4. Move Nandroid Backup off device
    5. Install Custom Recovery / SuperUser and Root
    6. Copy ROM to sdcard
    7. Run wipe script
    8. Flash Rom
    9. Boot
    10. Reboot into recovery
    11. Flash tweaks
    12. Boot
    13. Enjoy!

Am I missing anything here? Is there any need for me to flash firmware.zip or anything else at any stage?

Yeah, that looks pretty much like it. I'm not sure what exactly is included in the OTA regarding your bootloader or radio, but you could probably update via OTA then unlock bootloader etc.

I can't see any reason why you need to flash the firmware zip.

Bear in mind aroma is a nightmare on the One, so flashing can be an effort. Worth it though.

Got my cover today and it's exactly how I expected. Feel a lot more comfortable carrying it around.

I agree that it's more difficult to press the power button but I don't have a major issue with that considering it cost 3-4 euro.

Btw.. it's the S Line Wave transparent one I got.
