Exactly. Put some sand on your screen and giveit a rub with a screen protector on. Do the same again without one...

I actually don't have a screen protector for the first time in about 8 phones, and have a tiny little scratch on the screen. Dunno what it's from.

I've only ad bad experiences with the self applied ones. I bought a ten pack for my S2 and went through 8 in around 15 minutes

Honestly there's your problem,it took me 15 min on my first one, patience is a virtue ! And yes I did have to redo it, but if you spend a little time at it, its perfect. I can only imagine a built in one being fiddly, and if dust gets behind it you will pick up scratches in no time

What is a thin plastic screen protector going to do that gorilla glass won't??

Pretty sure that if you're that butterfingered, what you need is a ruggedised phone builders have...

I would prefer to buy a beautifully crafted piece of engineering and have the pleasure of the device - maybe in a years time it will be a little scuffed and aged, but I will have had the pleasure of using the device...

... rather than buying a cheap nasty piece of silicone to wrap it in on day one - kinda defeats the purpose of protecting it in the first place - it will look like ****e and much more bulky than a naked phone. As for those god awful screen protectors, they are like snake oil for phones... what do they actually do except catch dust... They look manky

Personally, I've always used a screen protector and case to aid with resale value. Would buy a 10 pack of screen protectors and replace it every couple of weeks to a month. Have become a real pro at putting them on.

    Here you go

I generally try to order only from Irish sellers. Ordered yesterday lunchtime, arrived today. Anything from the UK takes a good week.

I ordered as per your link Basil3 great case - i already had a white version of it but the clear skin definitely looks better.

    Cheers for the heads up

Yeah, strange aye? Thought it was something to do with my settings in eBay, but I guess it's how they've set up the sale.

Came to €3.97 including delivery, I believe.

Have many people rooted this phone? Have rooted the last two Galaxys before with no issue but the idea of a HTC One intimidates me! Is it hard?

It's not too bad. Not as easy as other devices, but if you follow this guide it's fine.

I ran into a couple of problems due to running new windows 8 laptop, but got it all sorted easily enough

If you've had experience rooting then it's fine. Just need to follow the instructions on HTCDev. Then flashing is very straightforward through
    fastboot.

Another toolkit user here, dead easy. Just used it again today to restore the stock recovery and take the OTA update.

Is there anyway to sim unlock this phone yet without paying for an unlock code?

Hey lads. I've rooted every android I've ever had but am just not fussed with rooting the one yet for some reason. Are there any nice tweaks or additions worth rooting for? Or ways to genuinely extend battery life? I'm sure I'll end up doing it at some point but quite enjoying the stock experience so far. Anything that should make me change my mind?

Noticed a strange audio issue on my One last night. Every now and again I'll hear a very faint popping sound coming from the speakers.
Last night I thought it was just randomly happening but tonight I've found it happens after every screen/button press I make.
In the sounds options if I disable "Touch sounds" it doesn't happen, but when it's on and after you get the "click" sound after a screen press I'll hear a faint hissing from the speaker and then a pop as the hissing stops.
The hissing and popping is very very faint but shouldn't be happening. Has anyone else heard this on their phones?
You'd need the phone up to your ear to hear the hiss but the pop I can hear while in a room with the TV on.
Would be grateful if someone could see if it's the same on their phone before I head back to o2.

BTW Updated phone via OTA a few days ago and don't think it was happening before that.

edit: This issue actually happens after any form of sound is played on the phone.

I can say with hand on heart, I've never found the need to rub my phone around in the sand. If that's what you're getting up to with your phone, maybe you should reconsider your usage patterns. I've never had a scratched screen yet and I can't see how "dirt" (are you a quarryman?) is going to get into my pockets or on my hands to scratch up the phone...

You're right, you can easily survive without rooting this phone, but I did anyway.

Some of the reasons I went for it:

-Get rid of vodafone bloat and splash screen
-Restore some titanium backups from my previous phone
-Ability to theme/mod. I like to customise, it's also good to have stuff like 25 app limit on folders instead of 16, for example.
    -Get updates nice and early

Regarding battery life, I don't game, so have power saver turned on all the time. I think I have everything but vibration selected. I also only turn on mobile data when I need it, makes a big difference for me.

If you never go near a beach, you have nothing to worry about. I only meant rub sand on your screen to see the damage it can do. A bit of sand in your pocket rubbing on the screen will scratch it.

A tiny scratch that may or may not happen vs an awful looking greasy sticker ruining the look and feel of the screen. I just don't see the point.

Jeez, folk man be buying the wrong screen protectors lol Folk don't even notice the one I have on my One X.

For the record, keys and coins can scratch and did scratch my old Desire which had Gorilla glass also - this was on the 2nd day of having the phone waiting for protectors to arrive :(

I have to say, I stick a case on my phones asap and screen protect them also, doesn't bother me if I can't show it off because functionality rules in ma house. Casemate Tough's ftw :)

Hey, just want to reassure you here that this hiss and pop is normal. It's present on many devices. The hiss is the white noise from the speakers when they are active. The pop is the sound created when they deactivate. I've found it can occur even sometimes when in silent mode as the system seamingly "prepares" itself to play audio. It's normal, it happens, and after having a Galaxy Nexus I can say it's non intrusive in normal use.

Cheers for that ULMarc. Just hadn't heard it on the phone till after the update. I'm always on the look out for issues after an update(iphone user for years:-) )
Was worried it just my handset as Google search didn't really come back with anything similar. Only white noise issues when using headphones etc.

A few things are wrecking my head with this phone.
The music isn't organised simply by the folder ive dropped into the phone, like it was on my old desire. So I've bits of albums all over the place that I'll now have to sit down and tag.
Swype text will not turn on for me anymore no matter what I do.
My navigation keeps 'searching for gps' without ever finding it, meaning I get lost when driving. It's really pissing me off.
I really miss the old scroll key the desire had, and texting so much handier.
It's going to dropped a lot as there is no grip on the back of it. Will have to get a case for it.

Radical idea: keep your phone in a different pocket to your keys and coins!

    Ta da!

I feel like I should be doing an infomercial. "When at the beach, don't crawl around rubbing your phone in the sand. Don't jumble it around with sharp bits of metal. Jars of peanut butter may contain nuts."

I'm convinced you've never been to a beach, and definitely not on a windy day.

Fair enough, enjoy your scratched screen :P

So now the suggestion is that on a beach, the wind is going to... what? Drive sand into the bag? Into my pockets? There'll be a sandstorm tornado in my trousers, and at the end of the day I'll pull out a phone with a sandblasted screen? The phone is going to get eroded like the cliffs at killiney because I'm going to leave it out overnight?

But wait! A very thin flexible piece of plastic *can't* get scratched because it's invulnerable!

It's pretty simple. Take reasonable care and your posessions are unlikely to get wrecked.
