406 Coupe, NCT 1/13, good spec:

That's a LOT of car for the money. Reasonable NCT. GREAT bodywork at first look and the 2.0 16v engine in that car is not bad at all. Its a bit of a sleeper. 3rd gear pulls forever. I used to have it in a Xantia with plus pack. Needs to breathe but a right rocket when it does. Low gearing a bit disappointing. But not sure if gearing is the same for the 406 coupé.

It will ALWAYS be a very beautiful car.

Market for big engined {by Irish standards} cars has really fallen

Sticking with the MR2 for another while but while looking at other cars I notice loads of FTOs for sub 1000 euro!

    Gorgeous looking cars IMO

That last one is a but of a scrapper, it's been for sale since 2008 I think.

I've had a few of these, loved them.
Depressing how cheap they've gotten. Insurance kills it.

Insurance is mad for them allegedly...

Figured as much...looked ok bar the tatty reg plate...

I can't even get a quote on them!..Insurance on the MR2 is going to be around €480 this year

Yep. Parts are shockingly expensive for them though from an insurance POV, headlights a grand each new for example, stuff like this scares insurance companies.

Not really, you'd get a brand new 1.2 SE for around €14k AFAIK

That looks suspiciously like a rental car (stuck-on tax and insurance discs, no dealer plate surrounds)

how does an old merc like that compare for maintenance costs and reliability?

They are generally more reliable then newer cars produced from say 2002-2008. This is not just down to the old cliche that the W124 is one of the most over-engineered cars ever made, it is also down to the fact that they are more mechanically simple and have far fewer electrics and sensors then newer cars. The gearbox in the W124 is not electronic like the W210 that replaced it in 1996 (The W202 C-class got the newer 5 speed transmission from 1997 also) so there are less things to go wrong with them.

Ive had 2 W124s and 4 W202s. I think theres some great value out there at the minute.

If you are buying a W202 the first thing to look for are rust on the front wings. Go for a nice spec'ed car with a clean body and a service history. Dont be put off by a W124 with 150k plus milage, these cars can easily take it as long as they have had regular oil changes. Also look out for noises from the suspension - drive the car firmly over a speed bump on a test drive. Some cars can have problems with reverse gear so check that it works properly. Obviously check that all electrics are working aswell as dashboard dials. Personally Id only buy one with a years NCT on it, these cars are so cheap nowadays its worth buying a decent one for 1000 (Im talking about the saloons here) rather than a rough non-nct'ed car for 500. Facelifted cars look better and they have fresher interior colors and more modern exterior colors also. The higher the spec, the easier it will be to sell on, although this applies more to the W202s and W210s because theres so many of them around compared to the W124.

As for maintance costs, used parts are cheap and easy to get from the UK. You can usually get anything posted from Dronsfields (huge merc breakers near manchester) or eBay.

all the way agree about w124, had it for few years, lovely comfy machine.

had to put through nct---passed with no probs.

not many left there now but if it was looked after-> happy motoring for long time ;)

    less chat, more metal........!

    My Friday offering..........

cheap shopping trolley, looks genuine, clean and an honest ad...........a short nct on her, but it'd be eligable for an early nct in a couple of months and should'nt be an issue to it - and with a fresh nct, you'd easily see back most of yer €700 outlay when its time to shift her.....so, cheap motoring, just what bangernomics is all about.
