The content/lyrics for the best part on gkmc are something i never really expected from KL, very commercialised recycled approach to the vast majority of it ,something you could never accuse him of on his previous work.

Can you please provide examples of the 'very commercialised recycled' (sic) lyrics/content on GKMC.

Can someone give me a quick review of the best albums from about the second half/3rd quarter of the year to now? I've only heard a few well known ones and maybe a couple of lesser known underground stuff....but yeah rec's please? :D College has definitely affected the amount of time I have for listening to music. At the start of the year I was able to maybe sneak three-four spins between the journey up and down but they're now devoted to much needed sleep...I'm finished for Christmas on thursday and with a new iPod (hopefully) arriving next tuesday I can stock up.

So yeah lads that'd be much appreciated! Cheers

I'll add Brother Ali - Mourning in America and Dreaming in Color, and Macklemore - The Heist. Both some of the albums of the year for me.

Very divisive* album. I like it and I still don't know.

It still strikes me as a like a book or movie adaption to section.80, it hits a lot of the same points in different and the same ways but with more of a compton twist obviously.

    *insert actual word here.

Whats the best Inspectah Deck stuff to listen to outside the main Wu Tang Group albums?

The past few weeks I've noticed more and more how he has the best verses on a lot of tracks.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,970 ✭✭✭mufcboy1999

young jeezy is an artist i didnt want too see 50 working with, just dont rate him anyway here's 50s new single.. he's labelling this the usual street single he does with a more commercial one which was my life.

the full track isnt out yet, im dreading jeezys verse, hopefully he might surprise me.

+1 I'm actually really interested in hearing what you consider "commercial" about Kendrick's album. You said it when it released and I asked the same question, no response ever followed.

Don't get me started on the amount of times you never replied to me after your constant trolling/spamming, your only back from a ban.

I actually forgot orizio, will do so Sunday when I'm on the laptop. The story behind this album is nothing different to any rapper rapping about his hood so many references to women, money etc.

Uh, I don't remember references to 'women' (one woman yes, but talking about a teenage relationship in a introspective sense is hardly 'commercial') and pretty much nothing about money. I'm just hoping your examples aren't 'Backseat Freestyle' or 'Swimming Pools' since both tracks are all about context and introspection.

    GKMC is not commercial
    far from it actually

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,246 ✭✭✭conor.hogan.2

I used to love her was just about a woman though and Eyedea was just an "emo in his moms basement".

Then I can see you missing the point of GKMC and calling it commercialized (beyond every album by definition being somewhat commercial).

Anyone that enjoys soulful introspective Hip-Hop should check out Quincy Vidal's new album...

    Terrible, complete with "molly" reference.

hands up the term commercial was wrong from me.. what i really should of said was the concept behind the album for the best part isnt as strong as section 80 imo. Section 80 demanded your attention the word play, the concept, the production behind the album.. amazing.

GKMC for the best part is hard to listen to for me, despite the obvious exceptions of 3 or 4 tracks. The 3 W's women weed and weather is what i personally keep hearing on this album, no hiii powers, ronald reagan era's etc. Don't come back to me with the obvious one's like b*tch dont kill my vibe, sing about me etc... gkmc honestly whats it about? really like whats so impressive about the concept behind it...a story growing up in compton? thats been done just like every other hood from countless rappers.

Its not section 80 continued anyway imo, Iv no problem about lamar rapping about women either as he's done it all throughout his career. Its just the way its presented for the best part on this album that i dont like bar the obvious better songs. I dont know if its that slight ego i can hear creaping into some of the songs on the album or what but im having a hard time warming to the album on a whole.

I personally think he should of kept the majority of his original production team instead of the more commercially known producers i.e hitboy with backseat freestyle etc which is terribly produced, shocking beat , possibly the worst song iv ever heard from KL and he to no surprise doesnt ride it well. maad city is another saved by MC Eiht imo, really shows lamar how to ride that instrumental.

Like i said there's something stopping me from just loving this album maybe i havnt warmed to it properly yet or maybe its simply just not that good despite what many reviewers say. Recovery was voted one of the albums of the year in 2010? i know many here wouldnt agree with that but im the same on gkmc at the moment.

In all good album all the same but its not a future classic or even the best of the year imo, napalm wipes the floor with it and in my honest opinion life is good, the greatest story never told are also better.

hands up the term commercial was wrong from me..

This isn't the first time you've called it commercial though. You've already called it commercial and then went back and said it wasn't. ( http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=81393765 )

Now you've said the exact same thing again and retracted it again? It really isn't a commercial album so I don't know why you keep calling it that.
Don't come back to me with the obvious one's like b*tch dont kill my vibe, sing about me etc... gkmc honestly whats it about? really like whats so impressive about the concept behind it...a story growing up in compton? thats been done just like every other hood from countless rappers.
What do you mean "don't come back to me with the obvious ones"? Do they not count? Why can't we talk about them?

It's not the concept that's being acclaimed, it's the execution. As far as 'day in the life' concept albums go I really don't think Kendrick could have done a better job. It flows perfectly from start to finish, every song moves the story along brilliantly.

I personally think he should of kept the majority of his original production team instead of the more commercially known producers i.e hitboy with backseat freestyle etc which is terribly produced, shocking beat , possibly the worst song iv ever heard from KL and he to no surprise doesnt ride it well.

    *sighs*

It's well established at this stage that he has no idea what he's on about when it comes to that album.

Tries to knock it in favour of Section 80 so he can say he was listening to Kendrick before GKMC but in being critical of it he only highlights his complete misunderstanding of a lot of the fundamental aspects of the album.

I wouldn't call this an argument and to be fair I don't think myself and MUFCBoy have ever really gotten into any kind of disagreement over Kendrick Lamar or GKMC before, this is actually the first time we've discussed it if I'm not mistaken.

Pretty much. The 'why I think GKMC is overhyped' debate has spilled into 3-4 different threads and it wasn't even interesting two months ago.
