So I've listened to the new Big Boi album a couple of times now. I am not impressed. Too 'pop', not enough rapping and not enough stank to it.
It just sounds all too casual.

Unfortunately I completely agree.

Compared to Sir Lucious Left Foot it's a very poor effort, in my opinion. I've listened to it a few times and disappointingly the only real stand out track for me was "In The A", which is an absolute banger.

I'll have to listen to it a few more times but like yourself, I expected way more rapping and far less R&B/Pop influences, which I really wasn't expecting from Big Boi.

The production was also surprisingly fairly average too. I would have personally liked less tracks produced by Big Boi & Chris Carmouche and more production from the likes of Organized Noize, Mr DJ, DJ Toomp, Jazze Pha, [insert popular Southern producer here].

It's a pity André 3000 had no involvement at all because he definitely could have contributed something to the mix.

Hopefully T.I.'s "Trouble Man: Heavy is the Head" doesn't similarly disappoint, but judging by the production credits and the fact that T.I. is lyrically on fire right now, I doubt it will be anything but brilliant (fingers crossed).

Actually it was something Dre said which made him decide not to do another funk album apparently.

I just downloaded it this morning and planned to listen to it over lunch. Disappointed to hear its too poppy. Had such high hopes for this.

I've been away for the last few days and only saw this now. I'm kinda delighted really. Freddie Gibbs has left Young Jeezy's label.

I'm giving Big Boi a break for a while and listening to other mixtapes and albums that I haven't gotten around to this year so far. This is just a bunch of stuff that has been building up and I've had no motivation to listen to. I do this every so often to try find something new and something quality. No joy so far!

Hopefully after listening to some of this cr*p it will give me a better mind to listen to Big Boi with.

Just gave big boi's album a few listens, I'm liking it so far. Couple of songs I wouldn't really be into but theres a very unique sound to it, this is first time really listening to him. I bought a few tracks of the left foot album aswell , big boi fan in the making right here .

Can someone give me a quick review of the best albums from about the second half/3rd quarter of the year to now? I've only heard a few well known ones and maybe a couple of lesser known underground stuff....but yeah rec's please? College has definitely affected the amount of time I have for listening to music. At the start of the year I was able to maybe sneak three-four spins between the journey up and down but they're now devoted to much needed sleep...I'm finished for Christmas on thursday and with a new iPod (hopefully) arriving next tuesday I can stock up.

So yeah lads that'd be much appreciated! Cheers

Kendricks new album is dividing opinion but I'm not very well up on him, I'm sure others here will have more (better) suggestions. Wu block is also getting good word but I haven't got round to that one yet.

If I had to listen to one of those above I'd start with Nas.

Agree with pretty much everything weemcd has said bar cruel summer I taught that was shocking tbh, I liked mercy though even 2chainz was listenable on it.

Also agree on lamars album and I'm a big fan of his.

I think you'll find in general most people would rate GKMC as one of, if not the, album of the year. Of course there has to be some people, including a huge fan like MUFC, who don't like it, but that certainly wouldn't stop me recommending it. I think he'll agree that it is a very interesting album, and I'll go further in saying it's amazing. At least in need of a listen.

I honestly can't Believe someone can say gkmc is better than section 80 and actually Believe it, I'm not saying anyone here has either btw. Section 80 was unique and a breath of fresh air, I don't think the same can be said for gkmc especially when both's content is compared.

I just think there's been better albums released this year by a long shot by other artists. GKMC is good like I said and I would recommend it but I think people's opinions are slightly blinkered by the bandwagon that comes with KL at the moment.

I can quote you section.80 word for word nearly*, but there is just something about GKMC that makes it comparable. I don't know what it is. Section.80 by all measurable things is a better album, but there is just something about GKMC.

Public enemys 2 albums and brother alis are worth a listen as is Childish Gambinos Royalty.

Also amazing, but very different.

Equally as good in my books, as a piece of music GKMC is probably better but Section 80 probably has better individual tracks.

I honestly just can't see GKMC as an amazing or future classic album. B*tch don't kill my vibe , swimming pools and maybe one or two more are exceptional songs but they don't make a great album on their own, there's too many flaws,boring to average songs/moments on the album for me. I think when compared track v track and as a whole , section 80 is the clear winner.

The content/lyrics for the best part on gkmc are something i never really expected from KL, very commercialised recycled approach to the vast majority of it ,something you could never accuse him of on his previous work.

I think boom bap said it, KL just doesn't really let rip on this album and I honestly feels he rides a lot of the beats fairly bad, maybe it's to do with that accent he's adopted on a few of the songs, I'm not sure.

I'm obviously being very critical of him on this album but I can't help but feel let down by it, maybe it's because I expected so much going by his older stuff and the actual build up to it. It might grow on me in the future but atm bar bitch don't kill my vibe Iv no urge to bump it atm.

Good kid and mAAd city are bangers. AOPP, BF and Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst are amazing.

Hell even black boy fly is great. Track for track it is not better than s.80 but overall they are very very very close.

I've just been listening to some albums that have been lying around lately and have found a few gems.

Omen - A Glorious Cool EP
Mike The Martyr - Lake Street Store

The new Mayhem Lauren mixtape called 'Mandatroy Brunch Meetings' is pretty good too.

A couple of good Irish releases in 'Flying Butress - Orsen Wells' and 'Bitter Rock - Cold City'...and GI's album is prettydarn good as well.

But the main one that I would recommend is 'Susbstantial - Home Is Where The Art Is'. Spectacular album.

i have to disagree , i honestly think its no where near section 80. Section 80 wipes the floor with it, even production wise.
