So the rumour I heard from a prominent city businessman was TK Maxx. I'm aware they have one already but maybe they want something more prominent.

That would be two TK Maxx in the space of what? 500 metres?

Not impossible...but doubtful I would say

There was a rumour a few weeks back that it would be a furniture/homewares shop, so maybe it'll be one of the TK Maxx Home Sense stores?

D'echo said that yesterday too - Lifestyle Sports and TK Maxx.

They did say it was just a rumour tbf, but that's the same rumour from a few places now.

If it ends up being another TK Maxx and another lifestyle sports, then I give up on this city completely.

I'll be disappointed with it alright. Whatever about it being shops I'm not interested in, it's shops I'm not interested in that are already operating within minutes of the site.

I'm not a big shopper anyway so I don't think anything would've been a 'game changer' for me, as such, but c'mon like.

Not sure what else could go in there. People saying house of fraser, but I can't see why they would want in considering department stores are on their arse. Definitely not a reason to give up on a city. The more inportant aspect is facebook going into the offices. That is a positive for the tech industry in the city.

    Yes,apparently so.

Great too see a technology company going in there more people working in town
disappointed if a sports shop opens in it. Wishful thinking of a new brand like forever 21 shephora etc would go in there

They are Oculus jobs. They're advertised on the Facebook Careers portal too.

9 roles, all tech based. Doesn't actually state where the office is, either but surely it's the Capitol?

Although, if its just 9 roles, maybe its somewhere smaller? Or, it's the start of a more extravagant hiring process.

Oculus bought InfiniLED, a Tyndall VR spin-out last year, so it's all in connection with that.
It's probably just 9 roles, because they have existing staff who will transfer in.

How many units are available in the new building does anyone know?

Zara as lead tenant but asking for 4-5 years rent free\heavily discounted apparently.
House of Fraser as well as anchor tenant...Facebook/oculus on top floor allegedly.

They can't afford to have something like tkmaxx or lifestyle go in there as anchor ... they need it to be like arrnotts/bts to get the right kind of renters/buyers for the accommodation

I heard they are putting a state of the art cinema in there from the Lord Mayor.

Heard from 4 different people in City Centre that its TKMaxx Homeware section and Lifestyle Sports. All 4 from different work sectors in City Centre. Hope they are wrong.

I heard about tkmaxx alright but not as the anchor tenant... I don't think business wise there's a problem with them going I there but they need a higher level brand as the anchor for the retail side.

If it's a tk maxx home store then grand but Lifestyle is incredibly uninspiring it's fair to say

Also heard Facebook are going to Tyndall building initially

TK Maxx has a homeware brand called Homesense with their first 2 stores opening shortly in Limerick and Dublin. It's probably this brand that is opening in the Capitol too. Lifestyle would be a very boring addition to such a fine new retail development in Cork imo.

Homesense should be a fairly good draw for people, if the crowds in TKMaxx are anything to go by.

I would have a lot more interest in Homesense than I would in TKMaxx.
I really hope the Lifestyle Sports rumour isn't true.

Heard today from a businessman in town that was in talks to lease the bar in the capitol that it will be Homesense (TKMaxx) as the main and bigger of 2 units. The other will be Lifestyle. He reckoned there will just be the 2. Also mentioned FB have taken majority of office space but was told there was few left to be leased. Should be annouced soon as they are saying internally they will be open in April

    Lifestyle & Homesense.

Young lads looking for the latest Air Max and lots of ladies looking for soft furnishing bargains.......... interesting mix.

Huge let down IMO when you compare to the variety Opera Lane achieved......... Cork is only so big though.

Disappointing but at least its not an empty eyesore anymore.

That's a uninspiring outcome for sure. Both retailers already in the city. Fair enough, Tkmax will have an expanded homeware offering but that's hardly a 'gamechanger' for Cork.
No, all in all, very disappointing.

It's not really that disappointing. If Lifestyle opens in the Capitol, that should free up a prime spot on Patrick's Street in their current unit.

It would be great if Permanent TSB also moved out of their current spot so that it could be combined again with the current Lifestyle unit to create a single larger space there. This would bring it back in line with what existed when Woolworths occupied the building.

Lifestyle Sports opened a similar sized unit on Grafton Street and it would be great to see an Irish owned retailer take up a pitch in prime spot like the Capitol with a flagship store.

If the other tenant is Homesense, it creates a cluster of homewares retailers in the area, with Søstrene Grene and Caseys nearby. This will go some way to attracting the homewares shopper back to the city.

The food centre would have been a great asset to the city, especially if it had offered some sort of food court with an emphasis on local food producers, but if the development proceeds as outlined by other posters, it brings retail back to this site which has lain idle for nearly 10 years, so that is a positive no matter what.

You could put any type of shop there that people go to and see it as a positive. For me, it's pretty uninspiring tenants and while it'll be good for something to be there, just 'something' there was quite a bit away from what was planned and promised.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭Bacchus

The most exciting aspect of the development for me when it first started was the reports that a new food hall that connected to the English Market would be going in. I thought it was a wonderful idea that would cement that little quarter of Cork as a great common space to go and eat, grab coffee, socialise, etc. So for me, it doesn't really matter what shops go in there, it's all just same same, another big shopping center. At least it adds to the "look" of Grand Parade.

One shop I'd actually like to see go in is one of the big electronics stores. Aside from Soundstore (which is quite small) there's no real value or choice anywhere in the city for electronics. You have to go to Mahon or the Harvey Norman by the Kinsale Rd. roundabout.

This was posted today by Lifestyle Sports:

"We're opening a New Super Flagship Store in Cork City and are looking for a talented Store Manager"

Although I'd rather not get another/a bigger Lifestyle Sports, I can see the interest in it. Homestore would be pretty disappointing, aseptically with Caseys down the street. I was hoping for something along the lines of Forever 21 or Hollister. Oh well, at least the building looks good. Has anyone heard anything new on the build? Open date/other possible tenants?

They are saying end of April/Early May but dunno how realistic that is. Homesense is main retailer going in there. Lifestyle will have a big unit but second to Homesense. Facebook will occupy offices.
There will be a bar in there as well. Apparently that is all for retail/cafe/restaurant. Dunno about if more go into offices with facebook

Do you know which shop will front onto Patrick Street and which one will front onto Grand Parade?

Thank you for the reply :) Is that confirmed or is this still a rumour? I wonder what store will replace Lifestyle on Patrick's Street
