    Why don’t the lease the cars more effective way the major haulage companies do it from the manufacturers.

    Costs would be huge. They're vrt exempt, insurance exempt, NCT exempt and tax....

    No leasing company could do that.

    Skoda are a remarkable patrol car, even Volvo or go back to ford they are unbelievable maker’s of patrol cars.

    For me Hyundai don’t cut it I’ve drive i30 and i40. The car is screaming at 3thousand revs and struggles to keep up with almost any car the offenders have. Take the pursuit for example in east wall a few weeks ago. The regulars in the i30s lost the accord and it too 10 minutes to find it again when the marked pajero found and stayed tail end with it.

    The equipment plus the overall performance of the i40 make it ridiculous for a patrol car personally speaking there now.

    The best was when it was ah let's get them all i30.... Oh wait the equipment on the dash doesn't fit.... Oh well, say nothing we will just keep getting the i40 and nobody will notice....of course after get a sh1t load of i30

    No leasing company could do that.

    An Post lease a significant proportion of their fleet as well as councils and many other state/semi state companies. The only long term and economical option for AGS is to lease.

    AGS may procure their fleet at knock down prices but it's not fit for purpose - what use is a 10+ year old Fiesta/Mondeo/Corolla on the road. It's massively uneconomical and a H&S risk.

    Not if kept in order and they retire when they hit the agreed mileage or before depending.

    I agree they need better vehicles and should do like the UK where they retire them much sooner.

    Look how some ended up here after they used them...

    Couple of X5 and the Vectra OPC etc. Ex psni that one...

    I know there's "an arguement" that the regular units don't need "massive" power.

    But these are still 999 emergency response vehicles - so SHOULD still have fit for purpose capability right.

    Be able to handle well when driven with some speed for example. Good brakes.

    Give the driver confidence they are in a vehicle that can do everything they need to do.

    The likes of Skoda and VW give you a variety of horsepower levels too.

    Even like your normal 150 ps 2.0 diesel Superb can move along okay. And while not a sports car - still better then i40.

    The i40s driving position/seating is also TERRIBLE imo and I'd have thought that would alone be a deal-breaker.

    The one I sat into reminded me of a dentist's chair.

    Agreed response cars need to be fit for purpose.

    For a general beat car a Focus estate/Octavia 1.6 are more than adequate imo, these cars would generally patrol built up areas. I would be of the opinion standard response cars shouldn't be involved in pursuits as they pose a greater risk than their worth. If you look at the likes of the UK and continental Europe most forces have standard response cars and then high powered pursuit standard cars.

    E.g. The standard patrol vehicle in Germany & NL is a VW Transporter but they have high powered BMW's/Merc's etc on the RPU.

    Back in 2014, I had to get x3 estates of the i30 class in the company I work for. I checked the usual suspects, Skoda, Ford, Opel, etc. and they were either too high a cost for the budget, or had a crappy warranty. I then looked at the i30 and the Kia Ceed. Both were around the €25k mark, but when it came to test driving, the Ceed was a lot more comfortable. They are based on the same shell, as they are sister companies, but only when I delved into the performance specs, the Kia had a 115 bHP 1.6 engine, whereas the i30 was about 108 bHP IIRC. The net performance difference was about 1.5 for 0-100kmh, but what was even funnier was that the 1.6 in the Ceed was faster than the 1.7 in the i40.

    I was going to be driving one of the Ceed's, so I made sure that I got the best in that class for the budget. Seems obvious to me that whoever made the decision on Hyundai was very far removed from working a shift.

    I see bmw do what they refer to as authority spec cars. So what about all the cars seized and never returned are they used?

    If they are taken by cab.

    Ordinary ones such as insurance are in most cases reclaimed unless absolute sheds.

    The issue is in how procurement is managed for state agencies, AGS can't just see what's out there and pick and choose. They have to tender for the procurement and choose from the companies who submit proposals for the tender.

    If a car manufacturer didn't tender for the project then their vehicle cannot be considered, even if it is better than the options presented.

    That's not to say that a tender cannot favour a certain vehicle in specifying what is required, but in this instance the manufacturer would still need to submit vehicles for the tender process.

    I've a 19 Tucson 1.6GDI,gutless unless you stir it thru the gears 😠,but great for some of the potholes I encounter. Re a 'decent' car for the job, look at what happened to the Golf R 😬
    As was said years ago 'police radio waves travel faster than any police car' and a good driver can make a piece of crap sing. Personally I think that good patrol cars are wasted on some drivers, and I remember the red Mondeo Zetec S V6 in D8 that the driver treated like his own pride and joy 😊

    The problem with radio waves is they can't follow a car themselves. You need a car that can keep up. Give traffic proper cars and put them out 24hrs. Again, regular don't need top of the range cars.

    The regular units are using 07 fiestas and focus’s still. They need an overhaul. For example marked insignia saloons and Skoda saloons or above average saloons. I don’t agree with a basic model Hyundai estate family holiday with blue lights. They ridiculously heavy to drive the oversteer is a shambles and the added weight in makes them even worse. Patrol cars wether they are RPU or Regs need another think because the current family estates specs are not working personally speaking.

    I get that and am very familiar with public tenders, but not for anything like this. It's a fatal flaw in this case imho however, if what is submitted is not fit for purpose, then it shouldn't be a case of picking the best worst. Whatever about printers and computers, when it comes to a role like this, the best worst is just not acceptable.

    As a benchmark - there was 1.8/2.0 Mk 3 Mondeo's as the main workhorse for a number of years.

    With V6 variants for some roles.

    Think the 2.0 Mondeo was at around the 145 bhp mark in petrol form.

    In the modern era the 2.0 VAG diesel would seem to compare to a Mk 3 Mondeo.

    Plentiful car options from Atecas to VRS Octavia's.

    You've got plenty of higher performance options for specialised roles too with VAG.

    Passed a 181 Hyundai Ioniq Garda car in Artane yesterday. Only got a quick glance at it but I’m 99% sure it was fully electric and not hybrid (different grille)

    Any idea of how many of these are in use by AGS?
