What's with the thread title, heavy rain and strong winds Tuesday night into Wednesday, should it not be Monday night into Tuesday, or is this going to keep up for another 24 -> 36 hours ?

Heavy Hail shower in Ennis just now also.

Going on the 12Z Valentia sounding, the snowline would appear to be at around 300 m in the southwest, and that should be the case right up through Connaught and west Ulster too, spreading eastwards during the afternoon.

Very steep mid level lapse rates and high deep layer speed and directional shear are generating the hail showers reported.

There was a very notable change at Dublin Airport as that squally front passed through between 09:30 and 10:00 this morning, with the wind swinging from southerly to northwesterly, and the temperature/dewpoints plummeting from 12/10 to 7/6 °C. There should be some interesting observor's notes in the 10 am synop when it becomes viewable on ogimet at 6 pm.

I left Galway this morning 6am and it was bucketing down with rain and 7c,got to base of Croagh Patrick about 7.30am and it was still coming down and 5.5c,about 200m from the top it turned to snow, felt like -10c on the peak, nice scramble, was great to see some snow, was back down by 10.30am,not a sinner around:D

Sleet and wet snow being reported also around Knock airport. Where has this cold blast come from? Currently 3.8c here??!??? (In a shower)

Potential for some gusty winds ahead of a sharp cold front that is forecast to cross the country tomorrow evening:

Tight pressure gradient close to the front and a sharp temperature gradient along it could make things interesting.

The latest HIRLAM also shows potential for mean wind speeds to reach gale along the Atlantic coast as the front approaches:

    183068.png

Gusty winds overland too during any heavy rain / showers . Might be something to keep an eye on

Expected to swing through fairly quickly but the rain could be heavy as it does so.

Between 8am and noon we got 16.0mm of rain; breezy, but top gusts just above 30kph.

Most interesting event; temperature dropped from 12.0 at 9.30am to 5.3 at 11.30am!

That's what a cold front should be like :D

    Currently dry, breezy and 5C.

A friend just put on fb that its snowing in Clones. Hope he is taking the piss

    Could be.

I was down in the city this afternoon but have just been told there was a snow shower here at 3pm; non-stick as the temp was +5C.

    Sorry I missed it though!:(

Snow in Sandyford? Not a chance. It was probably melting hail or something. I was in Dundrum shortly after and there was definitely no chance that there was or would be snow. The mountains were all clear too. It was +5.5 °C along the higher part of the M50.

EDIT: Actually, I was confusing Sandyford with Stillorgan, which is around 80 m lower than Sandyford (130 m)!

Su, I'm at - yes -130m! I didn't see it but my source maintains that at 3pm there was a mixed hail/snow shower.

And how could anyone confuse Sandyford with (ugh!) Stillorgan?

I think it was the initial S.....too much for the brain to process!

If it was mixed hail and "snow" I would imagine the snow was actually some smaller hail stones that were melting quicker than the larger ones, so would give that icy splat on a windscreen. I was in Tallaght all day (105 m) and didn't get anything resembling snow.

there was a heavy shower here earlier with lots of sleet mixed with it.. was around 6 o c.. temp was 4.3

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,129 ✭✭✭Wild Bill

    So...that was it?

Temp is back up to nearly 8C in a fresh SW breeze.

Any more storms on the horizon? Do we need a new thread or do we just add a few more days to this one?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,331 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

I expect there will be some active weather later today and this thread should probably be renamed to continue discussion, or have yet another thread. Squall line around five to seven p.m. across the north and central counties would be the basic concern.

On 30th. November 2010 I was flying out from Dublin Airport to the UK. Because of the frost and ice and heavy snow, our flight was delayed 2 hours. Coming back 4 days later our flight was the last to land in Dublin Airport, once again, because of the snow and ice.

So for those of you waiting for this SNOW.....I reckon it ain't going to happen!

Wind and rain and on Friday 2nd. Dec 2011, mild weather forecast. Yippee....

with winds veering westerly and easing considerably once it moves through.
