All 158,423,180 Nigerians are a lot different to 38,187,488 Poles?

Or just the ones you noticed...

Yes, for example, they don't even come from the same country. :/

Let's not encourage any discrimination to either group, eh?

Though to be fair, given the nature of this thread, calling Nigerians bad timekeepers must be ok.

It'll be okay when you live in Nigeria and can make that outside observation.

All this because the op did not want to sit and wait for the, delivery man, plumbers, electricians, babysitter.
Some people just have no patience.

A strange rule. Of course I don't know if they are bad timekeepers or not.

its a perfectly valid complaint. However its not just Irish, I can speak for the mediterranean countries, but the UK is - if not quite as bad - bad enough.

Why are plumbers exempt from normal rules? Or internet providers. When there are meetings I have to go to across London I get there on time, or call if a few minutes late. Thats true of people who have to the company I work for too. A 4 pm meeting starts at 4pm.

Except it doesn't always happen, not for plumber or internet providers. Why?

From now on I will not let in anybody who is over 5 minutes late, thats it.

No, this is not an argument for your thesis. You're given a time period, that's not Irish.

What is Irish is 'when God made time he made plenty of it' and people just not turning up at all.

I left business's because of this, there was I working on a car and the boss came over to give me a hand and I realised that he had to see a fleet manager about a contract so I asked him about it.

He looked at his watch and said, It's noon now, so I need to go to the noon meeting. He did not set off until the time arrived for him to go there ~ another hour to destination ~~

NOW: I can reveal the real reason for this: My Boss, just like most civil servants in this country, used to be a SCHOOL TEACHER: now the penny drops; as time goes by I realise that 99% of the Irish population were school teachers and thus they would not PREPARE for anything until the bell went for the next class.

You and I set off an hour before the appointment and add on extra time for weather, road works, diversions, accidents potentiality, breakdowns and loo stops and much more too, but. end.

Oh come on! A certain level of generalisation of nationalities is reasonable in order to "keep it real" so to speak. Otherwise we might delude ourselves that everyone is the same, when it's clearly not the case.

To answer your question, it's just the ones I've noticed / met. But I'm sure the ones I've met are in no way representative of the countries they come from

hmm, it is not such a sh*thole you know, its over 3 times bigger then Ireland, there are mountains, there is sea, there are beautiful historical towns.. ;)
    Bigger isn't always better.
    Ireland is an Island.
There are beautiful historic towns in virtually every country.
Not starting a flame war by the way.

Hmm, an over-generalisation for sure on school teachers. Mine tended to turn up on time. This is largely a private sector issue for certain self employed groups.

Its a funny cultural trait, and hardly universal in Irish business because large companies, in fact most companies run meetings on time ( obviously we are not exact when socialising either but that is not what the OP is mainly talking about).

As I said the tardiness is certain self-employed groups ( Internet providers being the large company exception).

Generally there is some cause to this kind of thing, some kind of economic signalling. I wonder if turning up on time gives the impression of not being busy.

Myth. Ireland is a land mass ~ actually too big to be called an Island in reality. :)

I'm actually more surprised that this thread is still open. A bit of back and forth rib-digging jokingly is one thing. The racism here is both appalling, and actually quite embarrassing.

The op is not completely innocent either Abi.
Racism might be a bit strong imo.

    For starters gbee, wtf?

I love the way any time we Irish get called on our bullsh*t as a nation eg drinking too much, swearing too much, being racist, being bad time keepers, we tend to find another race of people to call worse.

Biedronka, as an Irish person I apologize for the fact good time keeping isn't a part if an Irish person's skill but you have 2 options
    1. Give your clients a time maybe 30mins before you really want them to turn up
    2. Leave Ireland

If you think the Irish are bad, try organising furniture delivery in Arabia!

some of those are inaccurate ( racist? hardly). Fair comment is acceptable.

I dunno Sam. I think she's guilty of generalizing, yes. She hasn't called Ireland a shit hole for starters. She's complimented the country a few times. All I can see is someone who was guilty of of tarring the Irish with the one brush, on a matter I don't really think is that offensive. She's just given back what she's getting in the thread so far as I can see.
Racism might be a bit strong imo.

Think ya might have to have a wee look back, there are a couple of posts that are way out of line if you ask me.
Don't immediately jump to the defence of the OP.

What the hell are you talking about?

Sadly I've heard the Irish described as all the above over the years. Probably all true within Irish society in minority cases.

I too, am driven insane by lateness. I'm always on time, usually early, and I expect the same of others.

I've been in the USA for almost 20 years and it came as a blinding revelation to me where I moved here that americans are the same as we consider the Irish.

Californians are desperate. Time means nothing to them.

OK, Ireland is a big, BIG island. It separates weather the way land masses do. Check out real Islands like Bermuda etc.

To use a black brother's colloquialism 'We're some big mother***island"

Have you lived outside California? Because, while I found the same in California, I can't talk for the rest of the US ( Its clear California is its own cultural Island).

I thought that furniture there consisted of a big mat.

Its really not that big an island. I mean compared to the tuft of an island in some connemara lake perhaps it is, but if you browse the world map its pretty average. The one to the east of us is much bigger for a start.

Its the 20th largest in the world, which is nothing to be sniffed at ( since there are hundreds, or thousands).

It is still, however, an Island.

What about Madagascar then buddy? I guess that's a big BIG BIG BIG island then.

Ireland is a piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water, therefore an island.

I'm in washington state now and its exactly the same. Times are just a rough guide. I constantly get burned by being on time.

Other than those two it may be a kind of north/south thing.
