You were sub 3:35 in DCM right? a few weeks after a good time in Berlin? If I'm right, you should be going for 6 hours, at the slowest IMO.

Yep, as a ballpark figure (and going by the results of those from here last year) anyone breaking 3:40 in a mara, should be OK for breaking 6hours if they put the training in.

Best of Luck Marthastew, see you there.

You should consider Donadea 50k as great pre-conn training run.

Is the Hubby doing the ultra too?

Thanks RQ and Meno, 6hours sounds like a nice number to aim for.
I'll have a look at the Donadea 50k also.

The hubby, who from now on shall be known as Mr. Stew, has signed up for it also but I think (with my very limited experience but more than his) that he should have a couple more marathons under his belt first. Although we both really enjoyed running together for the first 18miles of DCM, it might be great to have the company. Could be a recipe for disaster that might end the divorce courts though...

Haha, yeah it's a bit of an ask after 1 marathon, but I signed up last year before my second (and the first one had been a disaster).
I remember myself and brian advising mrstew to hedge his bets and go for 4hours in DCM based on his HM time. Given that he ran much faster, maybe he has natural endurance in which case the Ultra might suit him.

As for training, you can base it around your standard P&D schedule but in general run you two longest runs of the week (the midweek MLR and the weekend LSR) back to back while throwing in the odd very long run (such as the 50k) the odd weekend.

Im sure there will be some long group runs in prep for this. There was a 30 miler which id say was invaluable.
I personally peaked at 3x 20 mile runs in prep for this last year.

Absolutely I want to , but doubt I will get to that distance by then. Id never make the cutoff for the ultra.
Just heading off to the gym now for my big session..... 3 mins walk : 2 mins run. Going for 6 reps. Looooonnnnnggggg way from Conne Ultra.

Really interested in this race as the timing works out pretty good for me. Only, problem is I'd like to target a sub 3 hour for the first time. Looking at previous years results very few people get this but obviously less people running it.

So, to all the Connemarathon veterans out there: how does this compare to other marathons out there? And is there any point targeting a time that would be close to my limit in a "normal" marathon?

Ps. I'll probably do it anyway as the scenery looks amazing ;)

Personally I think you need to add at least 5 minutes to your normal marathon time, possibly more. It's not a marathon I'd choose to break 3 hours for the first time.

I just want to add that this is my own opinion. I had a chat with Mick Rice once and IIRC he thinks you only have to add 2 minutes (Mick's not like the rest of us though ;) ).

2 for mick rice is about 5-10 for mere mortals. Id say 5 is about right, esp where the hell of the west is at 23 miles. If it was earler maybe your could recover and settle in.

    Hi,
Would be interested to get opinions from the rest of you. Have to say the ultra fascinates me.
I ran 3:05 in Dublin.....really want to get to sub 3 in Berlin in September. Thats the real goal.
I really have to run something else in the 1st half of 2012 to keep me going. I want to toughen myself up for Berlin...would having a go off the Ultra be a good or bad idea.
Despite my 8 marathons I dont consider myself an experienced runner as I only run 3/4 days per week. Would running beyond 26.2 break down a mental block that has me struggling at the end of marathons.......god im rambling.....sorry....

8 marathons definitely qualifies you as an experienced runner.
The Ultra is great. Go for it!

Hi Thomas, I looking forward to your thoughts on this. I was part of the 3:15 gang you paced for in Cork last June, thanks.
Might have a go alright...seems like such a daunting task though. Having to go beyond marathon distance as a training run seems mad. Maybe thats the attraction!

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,340 ✭✭✭TFBubendorfer

I ran my first Connemara Ultra with 5 marathons under my belt. I did better than I expected and enjoyed it even more.

Anyone with 2 or 3 marathons is well capable of doing the Ultra.

In what is sure to be a decision I'll regret deeply, have signed up for the full. I'm a lazy fecker and have a longstanding habit of going into hibernation in the winter, all training stops about Novemberish, so this should be good motivation to keep going for the next few months. A PB would be nice but if I can get around at any speed, should be in good condition for the rest of the year at least!

Was thinking of doing the ultra per my previous posts.
The grandfather passed away today and was just watching The Guard on DVD with my wife. They must have shown that Welcome to Connemara sign 3/4 times in the film.
So what the hell, grandfather was a good athlete himself back in the day so im now all signed up for the 39.3 and will run it for him and me.
